The 108-year-old maker of suitcases and bags was once the pre-eminent American name when it came to life on the go. Then, after financial disappointments and decades of shifting ownership, Samsonite took its shares public in the Chinese city of Hong Kong, seeking to capitalize on Asia’s growing legions of well-heeled travelers.

Its troubles are not over. The company’s top executive stepped down this week after being accused by a short seller of falsely claiming to have a doctoral degree. 1. Still, the company said that it took the allegations “seriously,” and that Mr.
  2. Tainwala would be replaced immediately by its finance chief, Kyle Gendreau.
  3. In a, an activist investment firm called Blue Orca Capital accused Samsonite of using questionable accounting practices to inflate its earnings and profits.

The report said that entities controlled by Mr. Tainwala and his family did business with Samsonite in ways that it said raised eyebrows. Blue Orca also wrote that Mr. Tainwala was referred to as “Dr. Ramesh Tainwala” in a few American and Indian regulatory documents.

  • But when Blue Orca contacted the institution from which Mr.
  • Tainwala, according to some biographical sources, received a doctorate, the institution said that he had not obtained a degree.
  • Samsonite responded by calling the report “one-sided and misleading.” It requested that trading in its shares be halted for most of the past week.

  1. The company started out in Denver in 1910 as a maker of wooden trunks for Americans traveling out West.
  2. The Samsonite brand — which honors Samson, the biblical strongman — was first used in 1941.
  3. It stuck, and the company’s name was changed to Samsonite in 1965.
  4. By then, travel was becoming an affordable mass pursuit, and Samsonite’s products evolved with the times.

It introduced sleeker suitcases, then ones made from modern materials, then ones with wheels. But in 1973, after the death of its founder, the company was bought by a conglomerate, Beatrice Foods. Crushed by debt, Beatrice was later sold off in a huge leveraged buyout.

  • Samsonite was listed on the Nasdaq between 1994 and 2002, when it was dropped for having a market value below the minimum requirement.
  • It tried to shed its dowdy, midmarket image and transform itself into a luxury brand.
  • A few more changes of ownership later, it floated shares in Hong Kong in 2011,,
  • Blue Orca, which does not hide the fact that it stands to profit if Samsonite’s stock price falls, says in its report that investors trade Samsonite shares at a high premium relative to its earnings, as if it were a luxury name comparable to Burberry.

In a responding to the report, Samsonite said that it had a strong record of organic growth and free cash flow.

Is Samsonite better than VIP?

Samsonite takes on VIP, to enter sub Rs 1000 luggage market by Diwali MUMBAI: Last week at world’s largest travel luggage company Samsonite’s global board meet in Luxembourg, a spontaneous cheer went up in the midst of the formal presentation by Indian representatives.

The reason? “Pappu pass ho gaya!” Ramesh Tainwala, president of Asia Pacific and Middle East, borrows the famous line of a Cadbury ad to explain that a project codenamed ‘Project Pappu’ to launch a luggage priced less than Rs 1,000 has triumphed. “The idea was can we sell a product priced below Rs 1,000 and maintain quality standard at the same time? We had to completely rethink on sourcing and design,” Tainwala said.

Samsonite’s existing range starts at Rs 2,000. The new product, which some global board members referred to as Samsonite’s and took nearly two years in the making, will hit the Indian market before Diwali. And it will not be restricted to India. Some of the Pappu concept will go into high-end products of Samsonite globally.

For instance, the light-weight idea of the new product will be applicable to our new Black Label range that starts at Rs 25,000,” said Tainwala. Samsonite in India had for long been focused on selling sophisticated products at Rs 10,000 and above. With brand American Tourister, it addressed the Rs 5,000 and above price segment, but it was only a year ago that it started playing in the Rs 2,000-5,000 price segment.

Even that was not enough to grab market share in a country where more than half the luggage market is at below 1,000 price point. dominates the Rs 5,000-crore Indian luggage market with 80% share. Priced Rs 999, the new product-loosely called AT-could be Samsonite’s best shot at the volume market, but analysts say the company will need to back it up with solid distribution to make an impact.

Getting a low-priced product isn’t a guarantee for success; distribution is crucial in this voluminous luggage business worth Rs 5,000 crore,” Jignesh Kamani, an analyst at Mumbai-based brokerage firm, says. Samsonite sells its wares in about 60 cities and few Tier I and II towns through more than 300 own stores.

In comparison, VIP Industries has a network of nearly 11,000 multi-brand retailers and over 500 exclusive showrooms. Yet, VIP isn’t sitting pretty. During a recent analyst con-call, VIP Industries chairman acknowledged the increasing threat from Samsonite.

It takes a brand three or four years to flourish and blossom, which American Tourister did. Now to counter this, we launched Sky Bags,” he said. Sky Bags war was originally launched in 1993 but VIP discontinued it in mid-2000. It was re-launched two years ago at a price range of Rs 1,000-3,000. Samsonite, on its part, doesn’t want to push its low-priced brand too aggressively and risk diluting its premium positioning.

While American Tourister contributes over 15% of its annual revenues of Rs 1,200 crore, Tainwala says he will be embarrassed to see the low-margin product range contributing more than a third of its business in the next few years. What volume suitcase do I need

Answered By: Hayden Parker Date: created: May 12 2024

How to Determine the Right Size Luggage, Pack or Bag – The right size luggage, bag or pack depends on things like trip length, type of trip and your packing habits. Buying a bag that’s larger than you need may seem like a good idea, but we recommend against this because you’ll be tempted to fill up any extra space you have.

Here are some things to consider when determining what size bag to get: Consider the length and type of trip you’re taking. Are you going on a serious adventure that requires tents, sleeping bags, stoves, climbing gear and more? If so, you’re going to need a large bag (or several) to haul all that. But, if you’re going on a simple weekend getaway that requires a couple changes of clothes and toiletries, then a compact bag will work just fine.

Here are some approximate guidelines to give you a sense of luggage and duffel sizes (by volume in liters) and how much they can accommodate:

30-50 liters : In general, luggage that has a capacity of about 50 liters or less is sufficient for a weekend trip. There are lots of carry-on duffels, packs and bags in this size range to choose from. 50-75 liters: For a trip that lasts one to two weeks, many people jump up to a bag in this range. 75 liters-100+ liters: For big expeditions, travelers typically need several large bags that can hold 75 liters or more each. (Keep in mind, of course, that the larger the bag, the heavier it is to haul. Multiple smaller bags might be easier to transport.

Are you a minimalist packer or do you bring along lots of extras? Some people can get by with a compact carry-on bag for a trip that lasts weeks, while others need to check a bag for a weekend getaway. Packing light has its advantages, like making it easy to maneuver in crowded places and avoiding checked baggage fees; to learn how to pack light, see our article, Tips for Traveling Light,

  1. Remember carry-on restrictions if you don’t plan to check your bags.
  2. Many airline travelers strive to pack everything into a single carry-on bag to avoid the expense and hassle of checking a bag.
  3. If this is your goal, then pay close attention to luggage dimensions.
  4. Most airlines allow carry-on bags no larger than 45 linear inches when adding the length, width and height.

For instance, a bag that’s 22 inches x 14 inches x 9 inches totals 45 inches. Rules can change, and sometimes vary by airline, so be sure to check with your airline about size limits (or other baggage regulations) before departure.
