What Kind Of Alcohol Is In Beatbox S o a few weeks back we were contacted by the BeatBox Beverages brand and asked to try their product. I thought it sounded familiar but couldn’t quite put my finger on it, and then it hit me. I saw BeatBox on Shark Tank a few years ago! The creators ultimately walked away with one of the biggest deals in Shark Tank history teaming up with Mark Cuban.

  • Anyone that knows me knows I’m a Shark Tank fanatic and a true entrepreneur at heart so when I had the chance to try BeatBox I was pretty excited.
  • Now to be fair, I haven’t always been the biggest fan of pre-made drinks or “ready to drink” cocktails but I was curious to see what the buzz around BeatBox beverages was.

For those unfamiliar, BeatBox is a premium wine-cocktail brand based out of Austin, Texas that’s perfect for parties and brings a little more fun to the drinking experience with fruity flavors, high alcohol content, low calories and some pretty dope packaging.

How it Looks : Probably one of the coolest packaging I’ve seen over the years, Beatbox comes in two main sizes: The party package is a cardboard “beatbox” look alike and contains about twenty 5 oz servings. It’s got a simple bag-in-a-box system much like the wine in a bag system you’ve seen at your grocery and package stores.

It’s pretty easy to open so you don’t waste time getting the party started. The single-serve packaging more closely resembles a muscle milk container and while it isn’t as cool as the beatbox shaped party pack, it’s still pretty convenient and sticks out on the shelf.

  • Either way, two thumbs up from us for both packages.
  • Also a big win, on both packages they let you know the number of servings inside, the alcohol content and even the calorie content (130 calories per 5oz serving).
  • That’s pretty rare in the alcohol biz.
  • How it Smells : All three samples we received smelled pretty fruity and had very limited traces of alcohol.

That can be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it. If it tastes how it smells this will probably creep up on you. How it Tastes: So we had the pleasure of sampling all three flavors they sent us over the weekend and I wasn’t sure what to expect.

  1. I’ve had some really rough experiences in the past with pre-made drinks but all three flavors we received were pretty tasty.
  2. The Fruit punch was probably my least favorite as it had a bit of an aftertaste that reminded me of sports drinks that contain too much protein powder.
  3. The pink lemonade was by far the tastiest of the three and went down a little too easy if you know what I mean.

We also had blue raspberry which was pretty damn good as well. I was surprised to be able to taste the flavors so clearly with so much alcohol. We’ve seen issues in the past with brands trying to ride that fine line between taste and strength and it doesn’t usually go well.

Many of the high alcohol malt beverages you’ll find at the liquor store suffer from this problem and it seems BeatBox has figured it out. Final Word: This is a wine based drink but if you’re a wine snob or even a casual wine drinker this likely isn’t for you. This is fun, refreshing, convenient and really appeals to the younger crowd looking for some easy drinking.

This is for the partygoers, for your next trip to the beach, or with football season kicking off this is perfect for tailgating. The alcohol content is strong, don’t let it sneak up on you, but even with 11.1 % you can still taste the flavor unlike some similar products on the market.

Why BeatBox Wants The World To Be More Like A Music Festival The BeatBox co-founders – Justin Fenchel (CEO), Aimy Steadman (COO), and Brad Schultz (CMO) BeatBox On Shark Tank, BeatBox secured a $1 million investment from Mark Cuban, one of the largest dollar raises in the history of the show.

  1. But in the explosive growth that followed, the brand learned the hard lesson of scaling too fast without having the fundamentals figured out.
  2. I sat down with Justin Fenchel, CEO and Co-Founder of BeatBox to talk about these lessons and how some timely pivots in their product and distribution strategy led the brand to reach new heights of growth a second time around.

Dave Knox: To start, what is BeatBox? Justin Fenchel: BeatBox is an 11% alcohol, ready to drink, party punch in fun flavors like blue raspberry, pink lemonade, tropical, and fruit punch. They are those nostalgic flavors you remember growing up with, but with a kick at 11% alcohol.

  • We are wine based, but we taste much more like a vodka cocktail.
  • And we’re sold in the most eco-friendly, portable, resealable containers, which is Tetra Pak and we’re just out there bringing people together around music and good times.
  • Nox: You mentioned that is a wine base.
  • How do you get these fun flavors out of that? Fenchel: So it is an orange wine which comes from fermented orange peel.

They take the excess orange peels and they add some sugar and re-ferment it up to about 21% alcohol. What you get is a very neutral, clean base of alcohol that allows you to make more spirits-based taste profiles, even though you’re using a wine base.

And we discover that actually by some luck. We originally wanted to make BeatBox with a vodka base and we wanted to do a vodka cocktail in a box, because no one had really done that. And we learned that you could not put distilled spirits in over 1.75 liters. Our first product was going to be a five liter bag and box, which was obviously much bigger than the 1.75 legal limit.

We were talking with our regulatory lawyer and he mentioned that there was this company that specializes in making this orange wine. We tried it and we loved it and we basically tried to recreate the flavors we wanted with the vodka mix, but with this wine mix and they tasted dead on.

That was how we got to the orange wine game. Knox: While the business started around 2012, the turning point was when you guys appeared on Shark Tank. What led you to that moment? Fenchel: We started it in the business school at University of Texas McCombs. We had no experience in alcohol so once we figured out how to make it, when then self-distributed the products.

We then got picked up by a distributor and we had exhausted all of the money that we had put in. We self-funded initially with $55,000 from the five original co-founders and we were able to get about $150, 000 from our friends and our families. All that money was going into making the product so we started to fundraise.

Nearly every person we talked to said “Oh, you should go on Shark Tank” and then said it as if you could just pop down to Sony Picture Studios and go on the show. But we heard it enough that we ended up applying to Shark Tank and we hit it from every angle we could. We tweeted at The Sharks, we emailed, and we sent them messages on LinkedIn.

We just did whatever we could to get their attention. We ended up making it through the process and eventually on the show. We were very lucky. I think of the 80,000 companies that applied for season six of Shark Tank, we were one of 108 to make it on air.

  • They said you had a better chance of randomly applying to Harvard and getting in than getting on Shark Tank, but we did it.
  • Nox: And what was the result of being on Shark Tank? Fenchel: Coming into the show, we had done about$ 230,000 in revenue in the 14 months that we had been in existence, and we had a distributor that could take us nationally.

We had an outsource manufacturer, so we were trying to check every box we as far as why would this would be de-risked for an investor. We had a product that was selling in the market, we had a distributor, we had a co-packer and we went in asking for 200,000 for 10% of the company.

So we were valuing the company at a 2 million post money valuation, which was pretty substantial at 10x our current revenue. And of course Mr. Wonderful bashed the valuation and said it was too high. But he made an offer and then Barbara made an offer. We didn’t realize they were all going to make offers.

And eventually the guy that we wanted to do a deal with, Mark, made an offer and he offered $600,000 for a third of the business. That put us at a valuation of $1.8 million post money. We were in the moment so we figured with Mark, he’s a billionaire, what’s a few hundred thousand dollars, and we countered his offer with a million-dollar investment for a third of the company, which would be a $ 3 million post money value, and he took it right away.

He was excited that we didn’t go in the room and debate. We knew we wanted him and it was really, really cool and a powerful TV moment and an entrepreneur’s dream to get a million dollar investment from Mark on the show. I think it’s still one of the top 5 dollar deals in the show’s history. And so from then it was a process with four months of diligence.

All the Sharks know is your name and your company name, they don’t know your business financials, they haven’t seen anything. So all that gets released after we did the handshake agreement. We closed the deal as it was on the show about four months later, which was a very stressful time, because we didn’t have any money and we had to be prepared to potentially air and we didn’t have this deal closed, but we closed it.

  • And then when that show aired and 10 million people saw it, every distributor wanted to carry it, every retailer wanted to do it.
  • But in alcohol it’s tough.
  • You can’t just sell it anywhere in the world.
  • We need to have permits and licenses and that takes time.
  • And so we ended up launching over the next 18 months in about 26 states, including retailers like Walmart.

But with just three founders and an intern and not having any idea how to manage really complex distribution companies that we were with, it was a total fail. But it was exciting and fun flying all over the country and we were on TV and it was pretty neat, but it was not the right recipe for scaling the business.

So in 2018 we switched and launched the single serve product you see today. We also switched from wine and spirit distributors to beer distributors. That was a huge pivot. Beer distributors are great at merchandising in the convenience store channel, where our single serve really needed to be to start.

Coming out of Shark Tank, we were only in maybe 900 accounts in the country in 2017. By early 2020 we were in 5,000 accounts, which for us was a huge number at the time and now we’re in almost 40,000 accounts. We learned a lot of lessons by going to fast right out of the show.

  • Nox: When did music come into play as an essence of the brand? Fenchel: Music came in day one.
  • I mean the reason we started it was because as a founding team, we were obsessed with music and music festivals.
  • Personally, I’m always the guy that’s hosting the pre-parties and the after parties and there’s always music involved.

I love music festivals. I go to a bunch every year. And so music connects people globally. And if you’ve ever been to a music festival, if the world was more like the vibes at a music festival, we wouldn’t be talking about all the stuff that we’re dealing with on a day-to-day basis.

I mean, no one’s asking you what religion you are, no one cares what race you are, what your sexual identity is. Everybody is there having an amazing time around music. That is what we wanted to capture in the BeatBox brand, this feeling of togetherness, inclusion and belonging, centered around music.

So it’s been with us in our DNA since before even the product was a concept. Knox: How did this passion for music manifest itself in your go-to-market strategy? Fenchel: So we always wanted to do more music festivals. Of course, they’re very expensive so when you’re just starting out it’s really hard.

  1. The other challenge we had, was our first product was this five-liter bag and box, which is 1.3 gallons.
  2. And that was really hard to sell at a music festival, because it’s confusing and you can’t sell the whole box to someone.
  3. It’s hard to do by the glass, pouring it into a cup.
  4. So it was really hard to do the marketing that we wanted to do.

When we launched the single serve, that was perfect for festivals. Music festivals are where the brand was born, it’s where customers fully get the essence of what we want to be. Our customers are discovering BeatBox at these festivals. They’re drinking it, they’re having the time of their lives with their best friends, old friends, new friends and everything in between and they’re having a great time.

And then they go home and they associate those moments with BeatBox, because BeatBox was there and it was this amazing experience they had. That’s really how we’ve built this community. And we have lots of different communities, but a big one is our festival community and they’re just loving what we’re doing.

Knox: With festivals being at the heart of the brand, what impact did the pandemic have? Fenchel: And so we started to build some momentum by early 2020. And we had all these plans to sponsor festivals in 2020. I think we had 30 or 40 on the books. But of course then March hits and there’s no festivals.

What we saw was two things. One, all the dollars that were being spent in the bars and the restaurants and all that, there was none of that. So those were all shifting to the off premise, which is grocery stores, convenience stores, liquor stores, et cetera. So that was a benefit to us, because we didn’t really have any sales in the on-premise, all of our sales were pretty much in the convenience stores.

So there were people discovering our brand at retail, because they were using all their dollars that they would typically have spent in the on-premise, in the off. So that was one thing. The second thing was we couldn’t do festivals, so we pivoted hard to a digital strategy.

Now we’ve always been a digital first company. We don’t do TV ads, we don’t do billboards, although we’re finally starting to. But we were on Instagram before Instagram was cool, we were the first company to have a Snapchat QR code. We’re always looking for the next platform. And so we, in early 2020, even before the pandemic, we were starting to build a TikTok presence.

And we also just acknowledged that people couldn’t go anywhere, but you could beat boring, was our campaign at home. And so we had people showing us how they were beating boring in their home with their social bubble and the product itself was perfect for the environment.

  1. You could go to the park, to the beach, the camping, all these outdoor activities, our product was really made for that.
  2. So we had this new group of people discovering the brand in the stores.
  3. We had another huge group of people that were discovering the brand online.
  4. And the combination of that, as things started to open up, really was a powerful combination of acquiring all these new customers.

And then as festivals started to come back, we were the first ones to be there. We were right there with our customers as they were coming out of their homes, meeting them where they were, whether that was first in digital and then after, as things opened up, back in the festivals.

So it’s really worked. Knox: Where do you take BeatBox next? Fenchel: I think it’s so hard to get to the point where everything has to work or nothing works. So when we first started, we had this five liter bag in box. We went on Shark Tank, we had all this publicity, we were with wine and spirit distributor that was right brand, wrong product size, wrong distributor, and no team.

Then we hired a team and we had great team, wrong distributor, right products, we had to single serve with wine and spirit distributors and a team. Then it was pivoting to beer distributors. So then we had right product, right distribution network, and we started to hire people from the beer world and we said, okay, this is the right team.

So now you have those three things working for you and it’s really hard to get your product to a place where it’s not a question of testing anymore. We know the product we need to have, we know the distribution network we need to be in, we know the displays we need to have at retail, we know the marketing we need to do, and we’ve got the operation side dialed in.

All of it is working. So now you’re past the test mode. It is scale mode. And so for us it’s the next two years are how do we go from less than 10% of the wine license accounts in the country to 30%. We are going to ship nearly 2 million cases this year.

To put that in perspective, four years ago we shipped 50,000 cases. It’s insane. But even 2 million cases only add up 10% of the accounts. We can really, really scale this thing. And so it’s more distribution and more flavors per account. We have an internal goal of 67,794 monthly buying accounts. And we base that number on what our current rate of sale is.

We have just about 32,000 monthly buying accounts. If we get that number to 67,794, we’re a $100 million revenue business. And we’re a top five ready to drink brand by dollars, including the White Claws of the world and the Trulys of the world. So that’s what we’re on a mission to do in the next couple years.

Beyond that, we said from day one, we want to be the Red Bull of the alcohol industry. And Red Bull is more than just the product, it’s the lifestyle that is symbolized when you buy a Red Bull. It’s how it makes you feel. Red Bull still reigns despite thousands of energy drinks because of that lifestyle component.

And so for us, BeatBox is not a craft beer out of Austin, it’s not a local vodka or something like that. It’s not a beer, it’s a party punch centered around music. And music is not just in the US, music is global and the product, the Tetra Pak product, is more widely accepted internationally than here in the US.

  1. So for us, I like to say from the beaches of Brazil to the warehouse parties in Manchester, we think that BeatBox can connect people the way it’s doing in the US globally, centered around music and great times, with a product that backs up those experiences.
  2. And so once we get to the scale we want to get to in the US, we see this as a potential global opportunity.
