- Now that pretty much the entire world uses the Gregorian calendar, we tend to think of its division of the year into months as being somehow carved in stone, but that is far from the case.
- Before there was the Gregorian calendar, there was the Julian calendar – still used in Turkey until as recently as 1927 – and before that there was the Roman calendar.
- The latter originally divided the year from March to December into 10 months of either 29 or 31 days, based on, with the early part of the year simply left unnamed.
- No crops could be planted or harvested during this time, so it wasn’t considered important.
- Later, the Roman king Numa Pompilius added two ‘new’ months, January and February, to ensure that the calendar covered the full year.

Unfortunately, 12 times (any odd number) is always an even number. To make the number of days on the calendar add up to 365 in a year, there would have to be one month with an even number. February was chosen to have 28 days as this was when the Romans honoured their dead. Presumably they figured you don’t get much unluckier than being dead, so what harm could it do? Later, Julius Caesar rearranged the calendar to reflect the ‘movements’ of the Sun rather than the lunar cycle, while his Julian calendar would itself be fine-tuned on the orders of Pope Gregory XIII in 1583 to give us the Gregorian calendar we know today.

But somehow, little old February with its unique 28-day length survived all these changes. Except in Leap Years, of course, when it becomes the lucky recipient of a whole extra day. When exactly those Leap Years happen, of course, is one of the key differences between the various calendars mentioned above – but that’s a story for another day : Why does February have 28 days?

#### Does monthly mean 30 days?

Monthly inspection does not mean every 30 days. It does not either mean any day of the month. The difference between “Monthly” and “every 30 days” is that the word “monthly” is little flexible while “every 30 days” is not. So if there is a requirement to inspect something at least every 30 days, we cannot go beyond 30 days.

The interval between two inspections needs to be less than 30 days. And if the requirement is for monthly inspection, the time interval between two inspections can be a little more than 30 days but only in certain circumstances where it was not possible to inspect the equipment on and near to the 30th day.

This means that while the meaning of the word “monthly” is not exactly “30 days” but at the same time it does not mean that we inspect something on the 01st of March and then on 30th of April. As far as possible, it should be close to 30 days but we are allowed to go a little over 30 days.

So why is the most widely used calendar in the world so inconsistent in the lengths of its months? And why is February stuck with the fewest number of days? Blame it on Roman superstition. The Gregorian calendar’s oldest ancestor, the first Roman calendar, had a glaring difference in structure from its later variants: it consisted of 10 months rather than 12.

In order to fully sync the calendar with the lunar year, the Roman king added January and February to the original 10 months. The previous calendar had had 6 months of 30 days and 4 months of 31, for a total of 304 days. However, Numa wanted to avoid having even numbers in his calendar, as Roman superstition at the time held that even numbers were unlucky.

He subtracted a day from each of the 30-day months to make them 29. The lunar year consists of 355 days (354.367 to be exact, but calling it 354 would have made the whole year unlucky!), which meant that he now had 56 days left to work with. In the end, at least 1 month out of the 12 needed to contain an even number of days.

This is because of simple mathematical fact: the sum of any even amount (12 months) of odd numbers will always equal an even number—and he wanted the total to be odd. So Numa chose February, a month that would be host to Roman rituals honoring the dead, as the unlucky month to consist of 28 days.

- Statistical comparisons by months are more accurate, since all months contain exactly the same number of business days and weekends, likewise for comparisons by 13 week quarters.
- Although the average menstrual cycle in humans is often described as 28 days, there is variation and debate about this in the literature. Still, a consistent number of days in a month might prove beneficial for tracking periods and fertility with more ease.
The first mention of this argument can be found in September 1927 issue of The Outlook briefly mentioned an advantage to women without detail. A 2014 article in Bloomberg that explores that previous article cites an unnamed woman the author personally knew who sarcastically disagreed with such an advantage. Overall opinions of women on this calendar change as related to the menstrual cycle haven’t been studied.

- Supporters of the International Fixed Calendar have argued that thirteen equal divisions of the year are superior to twelve unequal divisions in terms of monthly cash flow in the economy.

The main and undeniable function of the calendar is to measure the passage of time. This feature is mainly used for current use and only occasionally for historical events. Hence the conclusion that its everyday functionality should be considered basic.

Besides, if it is a good “measuring instrument” that meets the appropriate standards, then finding historical dates on its scale will be intuitive and easy, and you only need to enter them once. Measuring in a methodologically sound and user-friendly way – implies some basic expectations about the units of time that will be used: 1.

They should be equal, otherwise the accuracy of the “meter” indications, and certainly the convenience of its use, becomes questionable. This postulate is satisfied because all months except the last one have the same length, and years are accurate to one day.2.

Next post Previous post October 20, 2021 at 11:51 PM by Dr. Drang A couple of weeks ago, this question from ldebritto appeared in the Automators forum: I was looking for a way to have Shortcuts peek into last month’s calendar and count how many Thursdays were that month (4 or 5).

Any ideas on how to make it? Stephen Millard, who posts there under the name sylumer, answered the question with a straightforward shortcut that loops through the days of last month, counting the Thursdays it meets along the way. It’s the kind of solution I employ often: a brute force approach that can be written quickly and uses looping instead of excessive cleverness.

And in this case, since there can’t be more than 31 trips around the loop, it will run extremely fast. It’s a good solution. But it nagged at me. This blog has a long history of showing calendrical calculations, and I had written a post on a similar problem (finding months with five Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays) eleven years ago.

- The scripts in that post had some brute force aspects, but they also took advantage of how months are structured to filter the loops.
- I wanted to do something similar for the “how many Thursdays” problem.
- As ldebritto said in his question, every month has either four or five Thursdays (indeed, four or five of any weekday).

Whether it’s four or five depends on the number of days in the month and the date of the first Thursday of the month. We’ll consider each of these pieces of information and how they affect the answer. Since every month has 28–31 days, we know that each month has four weeks plus 0–3 “extra” days.

The first Thursday of September 2021 was on the 2nd, and there are 2 extra days in September. Since 2 ≤ 2, there were five Thursdays that month. The first Thursday of August 2021 was on the 5th, and there are 3 extra days in August. Since 5 ≰ 2, there were four Thursdays that month.

The logic is simple, but implementing it in Shortcuts takes a little effort because there’s no “date of the first Thursday” function. Instead, we’ll figure out how many days from the first of the month to the first Thursday. And because this is one less than the date of the first Thursday the “less than or equal to” comparison we used above will turn into a simple “less than” comparison.

The only tricky parts here are Steps 6 and 7. Custom date formatting patterns in Shortcuts follow Unicode Technical Standard #35, where c will give the day of the week as a digit from 1 to 7. In my locale Day 1 is Sunday and Day 7 is Saturday; it may be different where you live.

- Step 7 uses the number we got in Step 6 and calculates the number of days from the start of the month to the first Thursday.
- This involves modulo 7 arithmetic, so the first thing we have to do is subtract 1 from the Step 6 result.
- Numbers in mod 7 go from 0 to 6, not 1 to 7.
- After subtraction, we’re in a day numbering system where Thursday is 4.

To get the number of days from the start of the month to the first Thursday, we subtract the weekday number from 4, add 7 (to force a positive result), and then get the remainder ( mod ) after dividing by 7. Let’s do a couple of examples. If I run the shortcut today, last month is September 2021, which started on a Wednesday.

- Step 6 returns 4, and Step 7 returns (4 – (4 – 1) + 7) mod 7 = (4 – 3 + 7) mod 7 = 8 mod 7 = 1 which makes sense, as there’s one day from the start of September 2021 to the first Thursday of the month.
- If you’re wondering why we bothered adding 7 and doing the mod stuff—why not just do 4 – (4 – 1) = 1?—think of what happens when we run the shortcut next month.

October 2021 starts on a Friday. Step 6 returns 6, and Step 7 returns (4 – (6 – 1) + 7) mod 7 = (4 – 5 + 7) mod 7 = 6 mod 7 = 6 and there are, in fact, 6 days from the start of October 2021 to the first Thursday of the month. Here, without the + 7 we would have gotten a result of -1 which is not the number of days from the start of October to its first Thursday.

- By including the + 7 and mod 7 terms, we have an equation that handles all cases.
- This is not nearly as easy to understand as Stephen Millard’s solution, so I didn’t post it to the forum.
- On the other hand, his solution didn’t exercise my modulo muscles.
- By the way, it didn’t take me two weeks to work this out.

I had the shortcut written the day of the question, but I soon learned that my splitflow script for creating the table of Shortcuts steps you see above was broken. The Shortcuts team changed the look of the app, and the computer vision functions that splitflow uses weren’t able to figure out the top and bottom boundaries of the steps.
