Why is Christmas important

Answered By: Charles White Date: created: Jun 04 2023

Christmas – Religion and Culture – Equality and diversity – About Us – North Wales Fire And Rescue Service Christmas Christmas is celebrated to remember the birth of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe is the Son of God. The name ‘Christmas’ comes from the Mass of Christ (or Jesus).

  • A Mass service (which is sometimes called Communion or Eucharist) is where Christians remember that Jesus died for us and then came back to life.
  • When autumn has given way to winter and snow covers the ground, and lights twinkle from house to house, you know Christmas is coming.
  • Decorated Christmas trees are everywhere you look.

Presents crowd for space under the tree and families come together for a turkey feast. Christmas is one of the most important Christian and cultural holidays of the year, but what is the true meaning of Christmas?

Is it the gifts? Is it the annual economic boost?

The Christmas season, especially in the West, is a mix of pre-Christian, Christian, and secular traditions. What’s interesting is the etymology of the word Christmas. It literally means Christian Mass. It’s a shortened form of Christ’s Mass. Christmas is a time of spiritual reflection on the important foundations of the Christian faith.

It’s also a celebration. It’s when Christians celebrate God’s love for the world through the birth of the Christ child: Jesus. The Bible tells of his birth hundreds of years before, fulfilling prophecies. The Christmas story is recorded in Luke 2:4-19 North Wales Fire & Rescue Service would like to ensure everyone has a safe and happy festive season and asks that you take a moment to read our top tips for keeping you and your family safe this Christmas and New Year.

Christmas is a time for celebrations, with many family and friends coming together to enjoy the festivities. During December the monthly average number of fires, injuries and fatalities more than doubles. Take extra care at Christmas it is easy to become distracted with so much going on it is easy for disaster to strike.

Ensure you have working smoke alarms installed on every level of your home. A working alarm can give you and your family the vital time needed to escape a fire. Ensure you test your smoke alarms weekly. NEVER remove the batteries from your smoke alarms.

Escape plan

Make a fire escape plan and discuss it with your family. Ensure any visiting friends and family are aware of the escape plan too. Ensure you have a bedtime safety check routine. Check Christmas lights are off, cigarettes are out, candles are out and electrics are off (where possible) before you go to bed.

Electrics

Don’t overload sockets. Ensure only one plug per socket. Always turn off plugs when they are not in use, except those that are designed to be left on, like freezers.

Enjoying a drink at Christmas

The direct cause of 25% of all fires can be attributed to alcohol. In 33% of all fires alcohol consumption was a contributing factor. Don’t Drink and Drive – get those taxis booked for any nights out. Never cook after drinking – you can easily become distracted.

Safer cooking

The majority of fires start in the kitchen so this is a high risk area. Many of us enjoy a merry tipple over the festive season but be sure to avoid cooking whilst under the influence of alcohol. If you’ve been out for the night get a take away rather than attempt to cook. Turn off all appliances when you have finished cooking. Be wary of being distracted due to a houseful of guests. Never leave cooking unattended.

Candle safety

Keep candles away from decorations, Christmas trees, cards, wrapping paper, fires, lights and heaters. Never leave burning candles unattended. Ensure candles are out of reach from pets and children.

Decorations

Unplug Christmas lights when you’re going to bed or leaving the house. Check lights conform to a safety standard, e.g. British Standard 60598 Always use an RCD (residual current device) on outdoor electrical equipment. This safety device can save lives by instantly switching off the power if there is a fault and can be found in any DIY store. Don’t overload sockets with too many lights. Don’t block exits with Christmas trees, presents etc.

Heaters

If you are using extra heaters ensure they are away from curtains, sofas, Christmas trees and decorations etc.

Smoking

Put your cigarette out, right out. Make sure your cigarette is fully extinguished and take care when under the influence of alcohol or tired. It’s very easy to fall asleep while your cigarette is still burning and set furniture alight.

Christmas safety tips

Remember to buy batteries for toys that need them – that way you won’t be tempted to remove batteries from smoke alarms.

Keep decorations and cards away from fires and other heat sources such as light fittings and don’t leave burning candles unattended.

Give yourself enough time to prepare and cook Christmas dinner to avoid accidents that come from rushing, and wipe up any spills quickly.

Beware of trailing cables and wires in the rush to connect new gadgets and appliances, and always read the instructions.

Falls are the most common accidents so try to keep clutter to a minimum and make sure stairs are well-lit and free from obstacles.

In England, saints or holy people were called “hallowed,” hence the name “All Hallows’ Day.” The evening—or “e’en”—before the feast became popularly known as “All Hallows’ Eve,” or, even shorter, “Hallowe’en.”

How many years has Christmas been?

The celebration of Christmas started in Rome about 336, but it did not become a major Christian festival until the 9th century.

Is it possible to skip Christmas?

Do you owe it to your family to celebrate the holidays with them? Tips on how to opt out and not feel bad about it Getty The holidays, in all their glory, are also notoriously exhausting. Gone are the simple days when you would make something involving an excessive amount of glitter and then lie on your stomach under the tree for two weeks straight, sizing up presents and hoping that one of them was a puppy.

Now you’re expected to do stuff and spend money and help maintain the sanity of others. The holidays can be a tall order for anyone already running on empty, If you’ve been working overtime seemingly forever and you can’t remember the last time you could crack the spine on a magazine, spending your entire week off – if you’re lucky enough to get a week off – surrounded by family and friends and parties and expectations isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

So can you skip Christmas and stay home or hit a beach in the Caribbean or do your owe it to your family to make it home for the holidays? “Because we have so little holiday time in our culture, it ups the ante when it comes to being there for families, ” says Joan Sinclair, a family therapist and mediator in Toronto.

But it also ups the ante of self-care.” Sinclair says that there are legitimate reasons to not go home for the holidays: if the environment is stressful; if you have the opportunity to spend time with someone who’s important to you and who you get to see less often than your family; if you have your own family and want to make different plans for them; if you’re extremely introverted and can’t handle the crowds that amass; and if you’re exhausted and this is your only opportunity for downtime.

Family dysfunction is an issue for many during the holidays. A friend of mine was recently scrambling to make holiday plans: “Who wants to go to Mexico?” she offered. It’s not that she doesn’t have family to spend the holidays with; in fact, she might have too much family.

The daughter of divorced parents who have both remarried and added several half-siblings, she faces the unenviable task of trying to balance her time at multiple households in order to keep everyone happy, all the while feeling slightly out of place. On the years that I’ve been away for the holidays, the only excuse that seems to pass muster for me is if I’m actually out of the country.

When this happens, my parents are wonderfully understanding but pained. The message to me is clear: the holidays are a time when family should be together and I will be missed. And, like most good daughters, the idea of disappointing my family leads to a gnawing guilt that can put the kibosh on even the most glorious of beach vacations.

  • Guilt is such an unhelpful emotion,” says Sinclair.
  • If you’re respectful and honest and caring, and you know that your interest in arranging time to get together with your family is sincere, then the likelihood of feeling guilt is lessened.” Still, when you’re in a relationship there are certain accommodations you make.

(E.g., I watch football, and he goes to the ballet and doesn’t make up lies about severe intestinal disruption during the first intermission.) And if there’s any time that brings out a sense of family obligation, it’s the holidays. “The limited resources and time you have might supersede the notion of obligation,” says Sinclair.

Our obligations are to take care of our own mental health first – and to ensure quality time, not necessarily a physical presence.” Five tips on how to opt out of the holidays 1. Take care of yourself first. “You don’t want to run around like a chicken with its head cut off and get driven crazy by obligations,” says Sinclair.

As long as you remain kind and caring, you shouldn’t feel guilty about what you need.2. Break the news kindly, honestly and without feeling like you need to share more than you want to.3. Set up another occasion to spend with your family, when your personal resources aren’t depleted and you feel like the time will be more quality than quantity.4.

Why is Christmas so fast?

Why Christmas Comes and Goes So Quickly Doesn’t it seem like it was just Christmas a few months ago? Years seem to fly by more quickly the older we get. What is the best explanation for why time goes faster as we age? The best explanation suggests that it is all about how we perceive new events versus how we perceive and remember repeated events.

It doesn’t matter if it is Christmas, our first days on a new job, or the first day of vacation. New events make more vivid memories, and the more we reflect on those memories, the better they are preserved, and the slower time seems to go. That is why Christmas as a child never seemed to come fast enough, and as an adult, they seem to come and go more and more quickly.

When we are a child, Christmas is still new, different, and exciting. When we are older, it’s the same old, same old. As we repeat the same events again and again, they don’t make much of an impression and we don’t reflect much. So when it happens again the following year, it seems like it just happened.

  • Here’s a good illustration of this phenomenon: Think of your last vacation.
  • The first day or two seemed to go very slowly (and you probably remember more of the first days than the later ones), but very soon, it seems, it’s time to go home.
  • The later days of the vacation seem to fly by.
  • For this very reason, my brother-in-law never goes to the same place for vacation.

He realizes that novel experiences are more memorable. and suggested a couple of good books: Why Life Speeds Up as You Get Older: How Shapes Our Past by Douwe Draaisma, and Philip Zimbardo’s and John Boyd’s The Time Paradox, Zimbardo and Boyd suggest that we use time more wisely.

Live in the moment and pay to what is going on around you. Savor the positive experiences and they will make more lasting impressions. Keep an and hopeful attitude about the future. Plan positive events and be hopeful (e.g., imagine what a great Christmas you will have next year!), and relive the cherished memories.

The images on this page illustrate the show for the week of Monday, January 8, 2001, Which Season Is The Longest? And Which Is The Shortest? Spring, Summer, Autumn Or Winter Because the Earths orbit is not a perfect circle, the seasons differ in length. The mark on the orbital path just to the left of the Earth indicates the Earths closest approach to the sun, which occurs in January. When the Earth is closest to the sun, it is moving fastest, so winter is the shortest season. Winter in the northern hemisphere is defined as beginning when the sun reaches the winter solstice (in the constellation Sagittarius) and ending when the sun reaches the Vernal Equinox (in Pisces). It lasts 89 days. Summer begins when the sun reaches the summer solstice in Taurus and ends when the sun reaches the autumnal equinox in Virgo. It is the longest season, lasting 94 days.

Does summer last longer?

Yes, scientists have also found that summers have been starting earlier, lengthening the season. For every 10 years from 1952 to 2011, summer started 1.6 days earlier and lasted 4.2 days longer. In the last half-century alone, the length of summer in the Northern Hemisphere has increased from 78 to 95 days.

Does summer last 3 months?

What are meteorological seasons? – Since at least the 18 th century, scientists have sought better methods of predicting growing seasons and other weather phenomena. Over time, that gave rise to the concept of meteorological seasons, which are more closely aligned with both annual temperatures and the civil calendar.

Meteorological seasons are far simpler than astronomical seasons. They divide the calendar year into four seasons that each last exactly three months and are based on the annual temperature cycle. Winter takes place during the coldest three months of the year, summer in the hottest three months, and spring and fall mark the remaining transition months.

In the Northern Hemisphere, that means the start date for each season is March 1 (spring), June 1 (summer), September 1 (fall), and December 1 (winter). In the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are reversed; spring begins in September, summer in December, fall in March, and winter in June.

  • The consistency of meteorological seasons allows meteorologists to make the complex statistical calculations necessary to make predictions and compare seasons to one another.
  • Dealing with whole-month chunks of data rather than fractions of months was more economical and made more sense,” climatologist Derek Arndt told the Washington Post in 2014,

“We organize our lives more around months than astronomical seasons, so our information follows suit.” So when is the first day of every season? It isn’t the first of the month or the position of the sun—it’s both.
