When did 0208 numbers start?
The Telephone Numbering Plan – A telephone numbering plan is a type of numbering scheme used in telecommunications to assign telephone numbers to subscriber telephone networks in the UK. This plan has been changed many times down the years, but why? Most recently, the rapid expansion of mobile users and multiple telecoms operators meant the demand for telephone numbers exceeded the available number ranges, which prompted the need for a more sustainable solution.
Replacing London 01 – In May 1990, the London 01 area code was replaced with 071 and 081 to free up the 01 code range. This doubled the available numbers from 8 million to 16 million. PhONEday – On the 16th April 1995 the digit “1” was inserted into all UK geographic area codes, hence the nickname “PhONEday”. For example, turning London 071 into 0171. The Big Number Change – The 22nd April 2000 saw a breakthrough in increasing the available ranges within the London area. This was achieved by assigning the now freed up 02 area code. This gave London a city wide area code. Previously 0171 numbers turned into 0207 and 0181 into 0208. This increased the number by one digit expanding the available numbers further.
How much does it cost to call a 0208 number? – As stated above, all 020 8 numbers are landline numbers and therefore are charged at your standard rate. This cost could be up to 10p per minute but it will depend on what time of day you are calling and your service provider.

Can a caller see my location
Can someone stalk you with your phone number? – Unfortunately, yes. From finding your physical location to uncovering personal information, anyone with access to your phone number is able to stalk you and discover your exact location. It’s also very hard to determine whether or not your phone is being tracked or monitored,
- Cell signal triangulation. A phone’s approximate location can be determined by analyzing the signals from three or more cell stations. This means that cell companies and anyone with access to a cell company’s data can easily triangulate your phone’s location. Worse, cell providers often sell this data to third parties.
- IP address. When a user connects to a website, the website can access the user’s IP address and use a geolocation lookup service to identify the user’s country, region, city, postal code, and time zone. This information is gathered by obtaining an IP address from the user’s device and then looking up the address in a database.
- GPS track phone number. If you share your GPS location with apps, websites, and companies, they’re going to know exactly where you are at all times. Unfortunately, it’s also possible for advertisers, hackers, and stalkers to steal your location data with spyware apps.
- Bluetooth beacons. Bluetooth beacons broadcast signals to Bluetooth-enabled devices like smartphones. These beacons can detect the presence of nearby Bluetooth-enabled devices and can send tailored messages to those devices to aid with location-based services, such as navigating in stores and giving personalized recommendations.
Luckily, not everyone can track your location with just your phone number, However, they can use your number in other ways. For example, they could use it to steal your online accounts, impersonate you, or send you phishing messages. Below, we’ll explain exactly who can track your location and what you can do about it.
How do I stop 020 numbers
How to reduce nuisance calls –
- There are various products and services that can help block nuisance calls, although you may need to pay to use them.
- These may block particular types of call (such as international calls, or calls where the number has been withheld) or a selected list of around 10 numbers.
- You need to ensure that you are able block the calls you want to block and nothing else.
- To find out more you can:
- Talk to your phone provider about the services they offer, Different providers have different charges and so you may wish to shop around for the best deal.,
- Consider a call blocker. These are devices which you can attach to your phone, or which may already be part of a phone. These can be used to block different types of call. Some ask the caller to give their name before the call is put through to you. For more information on call blocking devices you may wish to look at, Ofcom has no affiliation with Which? and the provision of this link should not be taken as an endorsement of its findings.
Before you decide on, activate or install these products, carefully read the instructions to make sure they won’t block calls you want to receive. The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) allows consumers to opt out of receiving any unsolicited telesales calls.
- You can register your phone number – either landline or mobile – or by phoning 0345 070 0707.
- It’s free to register and takes up to 28 days to come into effect.
- Mobile phone users can add their number to the TPS register by texting ‘TPS’ and their email address to 85095.They will receive a text reply from the TPS confirming their mobile number has been successfully added to its database.
It is a legal requirement that telemarketers do not call a number registered to the TPS. However, registering with the TPS won’t stop all unwanted calls. Firms may still call you if you’ve previously given them permission to contact you by phone. To stop these calls, contact the firm in question (preferably in writing) and ask them not to call you for marketing purposes.
- Firms will also still be allowed to call you for genuine market research purposes, provided the call does not include any marketing or collect data for use in future marketing calls.
- Some firms do break the rules, although the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is working hard to stop this.
- Complaining about such firms can help the ICO take action.
Although there are some commercial companies that offer similar services for reducing nuisance calls (and may charge for this), the TPS is the only register that organisations are legally obliged to check against before making live telesales calls. TPS and Ofcom are not affiliated with any of these commercial organisations.
- If you choose to explore options provided by these commercial companies it is advisable to make sure you understand exactly what services they are offering you and any applicable charges.
- Be careful who you give your contact details to.
- When you need to provide them, for example when you buy something, enter a competition, or use a price comparison website, make sure you look carefully at the marketing “opt-in” or “opt-out” boxes.
Sometimes these boxes can be buried in the small print and are often found near the part where a signature is required.
- An “opt-in” box generally refers to a box which, if ticked, confirms that you are agreeing to be contacted by the company or other companies (known as “third parties” or “trusted parties”).
- With an “opt-out” box you are agreeing to be contacted, unless you tick the box.
- Look out for phrases such as “tick here to opt-out” or, if you’re online, pop up boxes inviting you to receive a company’s newsletter.
Some businesses use directory services to build their sales lists. Going ex-directory may help prevent these businesses from getting your phone number through this route.

Phoning to, from and within the UK – London Message Board Level Contributor 860 posts 27 reviews 47 helpful votes Phoning to, from and within the UK 12 years ago We are traveling with a student tour group in March and I wanted to educate myself on this topic so that I do not waste all of my phone card minutes trying to figure it out. We will have a pre-paid calling card only, no cell phone.
I have been trying to do my homework today, so please correct me if I am wrong: TO CALL THE U.S. FROM THE U.K.- Intl code + country code + area code + local number, ex.00 1 615 555 5555. TO CALL THE UK FROM THE U.S.- Intl code + country code + area code (leaving off the initial zero of the area code) + local number, ex.011 44 20 1234 5678.
TO CALL ITALY/ FROM THE UK – Intl code + country code + local number (leaving off any initial zeros of the local number), ex.00 39or33 then local number. TO CALL THE UK FROM ITALY OR FRANCE – Intl code + country code + area code (leaving off the initial zero of the area code) + local number, ex.00 44 20 12345678 () or 00 44 161 123 4567 (Manchester).
- TO CALL WITHIN LONDON – Dial 8 digit local number, ex.12345678.
- TO CALL OUTSIDE OF LONDON WITHIN THE UK – Area code (including the leading zero of the area code) + local number, ex.020 1234 5678 or 0121 123 4567.
- I think trying to figure where city codes and the intial zeros are used and where they are not used has been the most confusing.
Any input appreciated! 1. Re: Phoning to, from and within the UK 12 years ago Your homework is 100% correct! A-plus, well done! The only possible issue may be that the calling card *MAY* require that you provide a full number rather than a local number.
But that would be dependent on your card provider. Basically – “00” is the international access code when calling from any European country. The equivalent if in the US is “011”. The leading “0” on a UK or European number is only used when calling domestic (eg from the UK to a UK number). Just as it used to be (!) in the US, when calling within an area code, you can skip the area code and dial the local number (which can be 7 or 8 digits depending on the population of that area).
So as the area code for is “020”, if calling within London you can drop “020”. Level Contributor 2,788 posts 16 reviews 25 helpful votes 2. Re: Phoning to, from and within the UK 12 years ago Broadly correct, but for simplicity delete the bit about “To call within “. We don’t have different costs for local/national calls depending on what number you use any more, so it’s simplest just to use the STD (area) code + local number for any UK number dialled from the UK, regardless of where you are Level Contributor 9,480 posts 56 reviews 56 helpful votes 3. Re: Phoning to, from and within the UK 12 years ago Phew, lot of detail there, you’ve been working hard. In my understanding of things I’m pretty sure you’re correct. Just one comment for you which might help: If you enter your frequently used numbers into your phone with the plus sign and then the international code, then you can speed dial them and the phone automatically recognises where it is with no need for worrying about local codes. so: My office number in is formatted locally like this: 0208 866 7777. I enter it into my mobile phone as: + 44 208 866 7777, adding plus for international calls, adding 44 for the UK, and dropping the zero from the London area code. Now I can just selct “office” from the phone memory, and it will connect whether I’m in Vancouver (international), Verona (inter ), Ventnor (National UK call), or Vauxhall (London call), just with one button. That might save you some messing about. Level Contributor 11,394 posts 7 reviews 14 helpful votes 4.
