Why isn t there a Doctor Who Christmas special this year
Why is there no Doctor Who Christmas special this year? – For the first time since the series returned to TV in 2005, there will be no festive special at all – instead, following last year’s New Year’s Day special the opening episode of series 12 will air on New Year’s Day. In other words, fans are functionally getting the hour-long Doctor Who episode they want – it just won’t be festive, and it’ll be followed by the rest of the series a few days later.
- Not the worst situation to be in! As for why the special has been dropped this year well, it’s harder to say.
- Former Doctor Who boss Steven Moffat had previously suggested that coming up with new Christmas special ideas had become a challenge after 13 years, so it may have been that Chibnall decided to give himself a break this time around after experimenting with last year’s New Year’s Day special.
Alternatively, it may have been that Chibnall realised that he could kill two birds with one stone by swapping the special for an opening episode.
Why is there no more Doctor Who Christmas specials?
Doctor Who’s New Year Specials Were Supposed To Refresh The Show – In a podcast interview with Radio Free Skaro, Chibnall revealed the thinking behind moving the Doctor Who specials to New Year’s Day. While fans felt shifting Doctor Who out of the Christmas Day slot was a sign of a lack of faith in the show, it was actually the reverse.
- In the interview, Chibnall points to the fact that New Year’s Day is usually when BBC launches its most popular dramas.
- Over the years, big shows like Sherlock and Luther have premiered on New Year’s Day, so the shift to New Year’s specials was an attempt to bring Doctor Who in line with modern drama.
Rather than ruin Christmas for Doctor Who fans, Chibnall was driving the show into new territory at the behest of BBC executives who felt there had been too many Christmas specials. This same mindset led the BBC to air Doctor Who on a Sunday, rather than Saturday, capitalizing on a captive audience as the weekend drew to a close.
Is Doctor Who on at Christmas 2023?
The Doctor Who Christmas special 2023 will be the first full adventure for our 15th Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa. All eyes might currently be on the Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials, but there’s another treat coming to the Whoniverse this year. Russell T.

Doctor Who returns in November 2023 with three special episodes with as the Fourteenth Doctor, coinciding with the long-running series’ 60 th anniversary.
Ncuti Gatwa’s first episode as the Fifteenth Doctor will then air over the period. In the weeks leading up to the Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final, three coded teasers were scattered through the BBC One schedule. Each teaser included a binary code which gave fans clues to one of the three special episode titles.
The teasers all pointed to a big reveal on the night of the Eurovision Grand Final, The three titles: Special One (“The Star Beast”); Special Two (“Wild Blue Yonder”); and Special Three (“The Giggle”). Who is the new Doctor Who in 2023
What Is Doctor Who ‘s 60th Anniversary Special About? – Aside from Tennant returning as the Doctor, he’ll be joined by former companions Donna Noble and Wilfred Mott, played by Catherine Tate and Bernard Cribbins (the actor’s last role prior to his passing in July 2022 ) in Doctor Who ‘s fourth season.
Donna exited the series as a regular character after an adventure lead to her needing to have her memory wiped by the 10th Doctor, forgetting her time alongside him lest her mind face grievous harm, so just how Donna will play into the the story remains to be seen. The Doctor and Donna will face a mysterious new adversary, played by Neil Patrick Harris, and will be joined in the specials by Yasmin Finney as a new character named Rose.
How Finney’s Rose might connect to the other famous Rose of Doctor Who, Billie Piper’s Rose Tyler, also remains to be seen.
Will David Tennant return as the 14th Doctor
David Tennant’s Prep for His ‘Doctor Who’ Return Involved Michael Sheen’s Impressions David Tennant is making history with his return to, He’s the first actor in the show’s 60-year run to reprise the role of the Doctor after parting ways with it, and he’s the first to play a completely different incarnation.
Yes, Tennant’s 14th Doctor will be a different person than the 10th Doctor, who he played for nearly five years starting in 2005. Tennant’s new Doctor might share the same face (and penchant for saying “What?!”) as the 10th Doctor, but he carries all the key memories and personalities of the past three doctors.
Which must mean Tennant went back to watch the seasons of Doctor Who led by Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, and Jodie Whittaker, right? Not quite. “When we were filming Good Omens, I just acted out key moments from the other doctors in between, and that was his research, wasn’t it?” Michael Sheen tells Inverse in held prior to the SAG-AFTRA strikes.
- That was enough!” Tennant adds.
- Michael’s Jodie is particularly good.
- It’s excellent.” Apparently, Tennant makes a habit out of not preparing for a role, per Sheen, who joked that his Good Omens co-star hasn’t even read Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s original 1990 book.
- Tennant insisted he has.) David Tennant returns as the 14th Doctor, but will play him like the 10th Doctor.
BBC But for the three 60th anniversary specials in which Tennant is set to star, he might not need to do such extensive research. The specials, called “The Star Beast,” “The Blue Yonder,” and “The Giggle,” seem to exclusively deal with either or from the 10th Doctor era.
Why did this face come back? To say goodbye?” the 10th Doctor’s former companion, Donna Noble (Catherine Tate), wonders in for the anniversary specials. That seems to be the case. Tennant and Tate were one of the most popular Doctor-companion pairings in the franchise’s long history, and the anniversary specials’ focus on them seems to indicate that they’ll wrap up their tragic parting.
Tennant doesn’t need to know everything Smith, Capaldi, and Whittaker did just so the Doctor can say goodbye to Donna Noble again. Then again, it wouldn’t hurt.

I only need one: brilliant! Segun made the show’s musical landscape wide-ranging, specific and authentic. The scores for these three Specials illustrate that breadth perfectly. From the witty but emotional jazz-infused chamber piece of Eve Of The Daleks, through the beautiful and powerful use of traditional Chinese instrumentation in Legend Of The Sea Devils, culminating with The Power of The Doctor: a fitting climax to Segun’s work on the show – bringing together so many of the fabulous themes he’s created: from Daleks and Cybermen to the Master, Yaz, and the Thirteenth Doctor’s wondrous heroic and emotive theme.”Segun scored Sundance 2019 favourite The Last Tree, which was also recorded at Abbey Road Studios.
- This is Segun’s second feature film collaboration with director Shola Amoo after A Moving Image, and it earned him a Discovery of the Year award nomination at the World Soundtrack Awards.
- A BAFTA Breakthrough Brit 2017, Segun’s other work includes scoring BBC Two’s landmark four-part series Black and British: A Forgotten History. Also available Segun Akinola’s scores Doctor Who Series 11, Doctor Who Series 12 and Doctor Who Series 3.Doctor Who Series 13 – The Specials brings together the end of an era for Jodie Whittaker as Doctor Who and also composer Segun Akinola as they both leave the long running programme.

In doing so, he’s enlarged what’s possible musically on the show, while bringing in some of the most respected specialist players in the world for these recordings. It’s been a phenomenal workload and a phenomenal achievement”.Segun Akinola signs off on his four year journey through the Doctor Who universe, “The Series Thirteen Specials are exactly that: special! From Daleks and time-loops to seafaring pirates in China, there are scares, laughs, moments for romance and so much more.
All of which leads to the grand farewell for Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor in the centenary special, and also for me as my last episode of ‘Doctor Who’. Why is Doctor Who no longer on Netflix?
Some bad news for Doctor Who fans: The modern incarnation that started with Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor is leaving Netflix (in the UK) on December 31, 2020, However, there are still places to stream it – even for free (sort of). Despite being a BBC series, ten seasons of the modern Doctor Who are currently available on Netflix in the UK – from the 2005 Eccleston years, through David Tennant and Matt Smith, up to Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor. Jodie Whittaker as Doctor Who (Photo: BBC) The removal of Doctor Who from Netflix isn’t very surprising, as more and more BBC (as well as ITV) programmes are being removed and transferred either to BBC iPlayer or to BritBox. And indeed, BritBox would have been a likely candidate for the modern Doctor Who episodes, since 600+ episodes of the Classic Doctor Who, the biggest collection of classic Doctor episodes, dating from 1963 to 1989 – are available on the pay-TV service. BritBox UK (which is different from the US version) is a subscription service owned by ITV and the BBC, which brings a variety of past and current British TV programmes, as well as classic British films. However, we asked BritBox and were told there are no plans to bring the modern Doctor Who episodes to the service in the near future.

“The Christmas Invasion” — three words: killer Christmas tree. “A Christmas Carol” — a unique (if convoluted and confusing) take on the classic Christmas story. Bonus points for the sky sharks. “The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe” — the planet of the Christmas Trees. And the woodland King and Queen are a nice touch. Almost too whimsical at times. “The Snowmen” — nothing says dark Christmas fairytale such as snowmen with sharp teeth. “Eve of the Daleks” — Doctor Who has done time loops before, but a time loop getting shorter each time, on New Year’s Eve, and ending in fireworks, just perfectly encapsulates the holiday.

Will there be a 14th season of Doctor Who?
What Could The BBC’s Release Date Removal Mean For Doctor Who Season 14? – Production on Doctor Who season 14 began in December 2022 following confirmation of both Gatwa and Gibson’s involvement, with regular updates arriving online until filming wrapped in July. Furthermore, work on Gatwa’s second season is already underway, with showrunner Russell T Davies writing Doctor Who season 15 alongside filming.
- Gatwa also confirmed he would be back for more.
- With a seemingly smooth production that allowed for future work to take place, the BBC’s sudden amendments are curious.
- While the removal of Doctor Who season 14’s release window may raise alarms for some, there could be a number of reasons for why the BBC walked back its own statement.
With the 60th anniversary set to air in November, the BBC may want to maintain focus on that, just as how they kept Jodie Whittaker’s successor hidden until her last episode aired. Furthermore, with Disney contributing to Doctor Who ‘s production and distribution outside of the UK, both the company and the BBC may not have agreed on a firm release window.
- Regardless of whether the BBC’s initial report proves to be accurate, hopefully Doctor Who will maintain its spring 2024 release.
- Between all-star cast members, returning favorite characters, and a wide variety of teased adventures, many are keen to see Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor take flight in the TARDIS, and having it arrive sooner in the year would be a delight.
While a spring release may not be guaranteed, Doctor Who season 14 is undoubtedly one of 2024’s most anticipated TV releases. Source: Den of Geek, BBC.com
