The fifth series of the British science-fiction television programme Doctor Who was originally broadcast on BBC One in 2010. The series began on 3 April 2010 with ” The Eleventh Hour “, and ended with ” The Big Bang ” on 26 June 2010. The series is the first to be led by Steven Moffat, who took over as head writer and executive producer when Russell T Davies ended his involvement in the show after ” The End of Time “.

The series has 13 episodes, six of which were written by Moffat. Piers Wenger and Beth Willis were co-executive producers, and Tracie Simpson and Peter Bennett were producers. Although it is the fifth series since the show’s revival in 2005 (and the thirty-first since it began in 1963), the series’ production code numbers were reset.

It was the first series to feature Matt Smith as the eleventh incarnation of the Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels through time and space in his TARDIS (a spacecraft whose exterior resembles a British police box ). Karen Gillan is introduced as the Doctor’s new companion, Amy Pond,

Her fiancé, Rory Williams ( Arthur Darvill ), appears in seven episodes, travels with the Doctor and Amy, and is a regular character in the next series. Alex Kingston returns as River Song, a mysterious woman from the Doctor’s future who summons him twice in this series. The main story arc, covering several episodes, concerns a pattern of cracks in the universe which are sometimes unnoticed by the characters.

It is discovered that the cracks can erase things from existence; this happens to Rory, and Amy forgets him. It is revealed in the series finale that the cracks were caused by the TARDIS exploding, and the Doctor is forced to reboot the universe to its state before the cracks appeared.

  1. In addition to the six episodes written by Moffat, Mark Gatiss, Toby Whithouse, Simon Nye, Richard Curtis, and Gareth Roberts wrote one episode each; Chris Chibnall wrote a two-episode story.
  2. The series was meant to be fantastical to stand out from other science-fiction and fantasy shows, and the production team strove for a fairy-tale quality because Moffat believed that media aimed at children were some of the most popular among adults.

The episodes were directed by directors who were new to Doctor Who, Filming began in late July 2009, lasting about nine months. The series was filmed primarily in Wales, except for ” The Vampires of Venice ” and ” Vincent and the Doctor ” (which had scenes filmed in Trogir, Croatia ).

  • Design changes from the previous series included a new logo, title sequence, variant of the Doctor’s sonic screwdriver, interior and exterior of the TARDIS, and a change in the theme music,
  • The series premiere was watched by 10.085 million viewers (the most-watched premiere since ” Rose ” of the first series ), and set records on BBC America in the United States and the BBC’s online iPlayer.

Although overnight ratings declined compared to other series, one writer calculated that viewership had not changed significantly when time-shifted ratings were taken into account. The series received positive reviews, with praise for Moffat’s story arc and the performances of Smith, Gillan, and Darvill.

  • However, reviewers noted Amy’s lack of character development and the series’ diminished emotional appeal.
  • It received a number of awards and nominations; “Vincent and the Doctor” and the two-part finale were nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation (Short Form), with the award going to the finale.

Smith was the first actor playing the Doctor to be nominated for a BAFTA award. The series was accompanied by a soundtrack and tie-in books and video games; four of the latter were released on the BBC website and advertised as additional episodes of the series.

Is Disney buying Dr Who

Answered By: Justin Hall Date: created: May 23 2024

Opinion – October 26, 2022 — 3.30pm October 26, 2022 — 3.30pm Doctor Who has been exterminated off the ABC after more than 50 years, and it just feels wrong. Disney+ has nabbed the TARDIS and rights to all new episodes of the quirky science fiction series about the alien (but very British) Time Lord known as The Doctor. David Tennant, who is returning as Doctor Who, exits the TARDIS. Credit: BBC “We are incredibly grateful to the generations of Whovians who have enjoyed Doctor Who with us on the ABC,” it said. “Everyone at the ABC wishes the Doctor well on their adventures and we hope the Time Lord will visit us again at some stage in the future.” Sadly, it feels like a forlorn hope. A new refrigerator packing box became our very own TARDIS after we stuck a white bucket on top. Imagine the excitement. But my second reaction goes beyond my incurable nostalgia and is a lament about the state of public broadcasting both here and overseas. Doctor Who originally ran from 1963 to 1989 on the British Broadcasting Corporation, the world’s oldest public broadcaster, before a new lease of life in 2005 once again brought it enormous popularity and acclaim.

The latest episode to mark the BBC’s centenary aired here on Monday, and a series of specials will celebrate the program’s 60th anniversary next year. Doctor Who has been part of the ABC since 1965, when TV Week breathlessly introduced the drama to local audiences as “science fiction at its most thrilling” and told how Melbourne dramatist Anthony Coburn wrote the first four episodes.

  • The program had also been sold to New Zealand and Canada, it reported.
  • Now public broadcasting is in decline, under assault from multinational streaming services including Amazon Prime Video and Netflix, which have taken over the airwaves far more successfully than the Autons or Sontarans ever managed.

And we are losing something on the way. The BBC: A People’s History by David Hendy recounts how, in 1922, a tiny group of men and women created the BBC “to remake culture for the good of humanity”. Nation-building and the public good were intrinsic to the founding of the BBC and the ABC.

These ambitions do not form part of the KPIs of The Walt Disney Company. Public broadcasting, making programs accessible to all, brings all kinds of people together. My friend, Kassum, recalls watching The Doctor battling the exterminating Daleks while growing up in Ghana in the 1980s. I doubt his family would have been able to pay for Disney+.

I doubt my parents would have wanted to. Loading The Great British Dream Factory by Dominic Sandbrook recounts how Doctor Who was part of Britain’s incredible success in cultural exports, from James Bond and The Beatles to Harry Potter and Catherine Cookson, whose novels sold 100 million copies.

Under the Disney+ deal, the BBC will still own the show but it won’t control it. It will be made by former BBC executive Russell T. Davies and a production company owned by Sony. Certainly, the Disney+ deal will get Doctor Who more prominence. Next year, old favourite Doctor David Tennant takes over the TARDIS for three 60th anniversary specials.

Then the new Doctor, Sex Education ‘s Ncuti Gatwa, who was born in Rwanda and raised in Scotland, takes over. He confirmed the Disney+ deal on US talk show Live with Kelly and Ryan, part of pushing the program to boldly go where its publicity opportunities haven’t gone before.

  • Clearly, money is being poured into the series and new audiences will become aware of it.
  • But with Doctor Who, bigger is not better.
  • Loading The ceaseless Marvel-style action of the latest special, The Power of the Doctor, made to celebrate the BBC’s centenary, left me uninvolved and breathless.
  • It had me yearning for more baroque episodes, such as when a shapeshifting wasp murders guests at a garden party attended by Agatha Christie, copying methods similar to her novels.

Or when the Doctor barricades an Edwardian lighthouse against a green blob, only to discover he has trapped the alien invader inside and left everyone defenceless. Yes, I shall make the switch to Disney+ next year. But I shall feel sad about the continued chipping away at our public broadcasters.
