What can TikTok see on your phone
A new analysis claims popular social media app TikTok collects users’ personal information – more than any other app or messaging service. As reported by The Times, a study conducted by cybersecurity company Internet 2.0, the video sharing app has double the number of trackers within its source code than average.
These trackers can be of use to developers and advertisers so they can get a better understanding of their users. It comes after Internet 2.0 previously claimed TikTok collects information from users that is “overly intrusive” and is “not necessary for the application to function.” According to stats by social media advertising agency, Wallaroo Media, TikTok is available in over 150 countries and has more than one billion users.
In the US alone, the app – which is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance – has been downloaded more than 210 million times. It also claims the app has software that can gain access to information about the user’s WiFi, their phone’s sim card, what type of phone they have and any subscription information. The cyber security organisation says TikTok regularly requests for the user to give it access to their contacts as well.

TikTok tracks you even if you don’t have the app, report says
- tracks people across the web even if they are not users of the app, a new report has revealed.
- The viral video platform uses similar data collection tactics to established tech giants like Alphabet (Google) and Meta (Facebook), according to by nonprofit organisation Consumer Reports.
- TikTok receives information including a person’s IP address, their web browsing habits and search history, though some settings can override how much data is tracked.
- “I was genuinely surprised that TikTok’s trackers are already this widespread,” said Patrick Jackson, chief technology officer of security firm Disconnect, who was involved in the research.
“The only reason this works is because it’s a secret operation. Some people might not care, but people should have a choice. It shouldn’t be happening in the shadows.”
- The Independent has reached out to TikTok for comment on the report.
- A spokesperson told Consumer Reports that the data “is not used to group individuals into particular interest categories for other advertisers to target” and only uses the data of people without a TikTok account for “aggregated” reports.
- “Like other platforms, the data we receive from advertisers is used to improve the effectiveness of our advertising services,” the spokesperson said.
- Examples of data reportedly shared with TikTok include information tracked by websites related to domestic violence, birth control and dieting.
- TikTok, which to become the world’s most popular site last year, said it is currently working with partners to avoid inadvertent transmission of certain kinds of sensitive information, such as data about children or health conditions.
- It is not the first time that the app, owned by Chinese firm ByteDance, has faced scrutiny over its data collection practices.
- Last month, the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office served a “notice of intent” to TikTok following an investigation into how the company processed the data of children under the age of 13.
- TikTok faces a £27 million fine if found to have been in breach of UK data protection laws.

Can you see who views your TikTok videos? – Of course, what you really want to know is whether someone has seen a specific video of yours. That’s where TikTok’s reporting falls a bit short. While you can see the total views of a TikTok video, TikTok does not provide a list of every person who has watched it.
- Article continues below advertisement That being said, you can see if the friend you’re sharing TikToks with is actually viewing them.
- When you copy a link from TikTok to send to a friend, it tells you when another user has opened that link and viewed the video.
- Even if you don’t already follow them, it’ll give you a notification reading ” just viewed the video you shared.” As far as we can tell, TikTok has no plans to implement a feature that lets you see who has watched each individual video on your profile.
The best thing to do if you’re really trying to make an impression is probably to just keep making content and putting it out there. Good luck and happy TikTok-ing!
