The Fifteenth Doctor will be the next incarnation of the Doctor, the protagonist of the BBC science fiction television series Doctor Who, He is set to be portrayed by Rwandan-Scottish actor Ncuti Gatwa, Gatwa will become the first black actor and the fourth Scottish actor to lead the series.

Ncuti Gatwa Binge-Watched New Doctor Who and “Fell In Love With It” Ncuti Gatwa says he binge-watched 21st Century Doctor Who and was completely enchanted by it. It’s aways lovely to hear the new lead takes research this seriously, and Gatwa apparently spent a week watching “every Doctor Who episode since its 2005 revival”.

The story of the time-displaced Time Lord, lost from his people after the Time War, particularly resonated — a young Ncuti and his family fled Rwanda, escaping the genocide against the Tutsi minority, and came to Scotland.

Gatwa says of the Doctor, then: “This person survived a genocide. This person fits in everywhere and nowhere. I am the Doctor. The Doctor is me.” Very promising talk. Oh, and there’s a joy to him too, as : “I love Jon Pertwee, the Third Doctor’s, outfits. Lovely velvet jackets and frilly shirts. I feel a connection to him; our Doctors are the only two who dress like sluts.” That might be the first time the Third Doctor has been described as thus, outside of Twitter (yes, we’re still calling it Twitter, like the rest of the world).

Through a process called regeneration, the Doctor’s body goes through a process where it changes when their system realizes they’re about to die. The last person to portray the role over the course of a couple of seasons was Jodie Whittaker, who made history as the first woman to play the Doctor as an established version of the character.

Why is the 11th Doctor so different?

I’m a Ten girl, I’ll always be a Ten girl, and maybe some day I’ll be able to worm inside the mind of a Ten-hater and explain myself fully with another lengthy, clickbait-title-y essay. But for now, suffice it to say I think I’m in the majority. Ten is the heart of the Doctor, and he strikes most fans as such.

1. And from what I’ve seen, I’m also in the majority in thinking that Nine sucked, while Eleven is tolerable at best.
2. He’s kind of a shadow of the Doctor.
3. He has all the humor, but none of the soul.
4. None of the emotion.
5. He leaves something to be desired.
6. I’ve already addressed why I’m wrong to hate Nine,
7. But I never put much thought into the meh-ness of Eleven.

I mean, he’s fine. He’s unoffensive. I know there are people who love him and people who hate him, but I’m neither, and that was fine with me. I thought, for example, that he could have had better chemistry with literally every other character he comes across.

• There’s just sort of a barrier there, you know? Like, I don’t believe that he’s interested in River.
• I don’t believe that he cares about Amy.
• I know that we’re meant to think that he does, but what we’re presented with onscreen begs to differ.
• He’s just. cold.
• I called it a failure of acting, actually, because Matt Smith’s Doctor just fails to really connect with people.

Well, I started rewatching the series recently. And what did I discover? Eleven is just as good as Nine. He’s just as good as Ten. He makes just as much sense in the progression of who the Doctor was, is, and becomes. This was a bolt from the blue, I don’t mind telling you.

• If you’re like me and you hate Eleven because he’s an emotionless freakazoid, or you nothing him because he’s cute, but kind of a shell of who the Doctor is meant to be well.
• This is for you.
• Let me take you back for a second.
• Well, back, and the forward, and then back again.
• All the way back and forward to the Racnoss, where Ten is saved when Donna is all “get the hell out of there you suicidal fuck”.

No Donna? He dies (see: Turn Left ). And not dies as in regenerates; he dies dies. He dies and then he is dead. Let’s talk about that for a second. Did he know that would happen? I submit that he did. I would, in fact, say that’s why he drained the Thames.

To save humanity, yes. But, more importantly, to save humanity at the expense of his life. I briefly discussed that Nine had a death wish. That was total conjecture at the time, admittedly but it is, at the very least, not entirely refutable. But Ten? Ten’s death wish is staring us in the face with the Racnoss, with the Sontaran Stratagem, with the End of Time, with all the other episodes where Ten is prepared to die.

He’s not just being cavalier. He’s not just doing what is necessary. We know this because he is saved, time and again, by his companion (or by a Redemption Equals Death device (see Rattigan )). So yeah. Death wish. And Ten inevitably gets his wish, fittingly when there’s no companion around to talk him out of it.

Well, there’s Wilf. Wilfy has a bit of a life wish, doesn’t he? But we like Wilf, so we’ll let that be for now. Say you’re the Doctor’s subconscious, or his survival instinct. You’re whatever it is that makes us hesitate just as we pull the trigger, blowing our faces off instead of blowing our brains out.

Wow, that got really dark really fast, didn’t it? Sorry. Anyway. What do you do when your charge is intent on dying for a worthy cause? When his guilt overcomes him, when the only way out is to accept death’s embrace when it reaches out? What do you do when you have the opportunity to fundamentally change who he is? You take away his heart.

You distance him from the thing that makes him feel guilt, loss, and love. If those emotions are the sun, Ten was burning. Eleven might just have enough distance to survive despite, well. Anything that consumed Nine. Anything that consumed Ten. Foreseeably, from that point in time, anything at all. Eleven is a survivalist.

The Doctor regenerates as a way of keeping himself alive, after all. It’s a defense mechanism. So when the Doctor has a death wish, when he’s more interested in sacrificing himself to save his soul than in living to save another day, his instincts take over.

1. He regenerates into a Doctor that’s more alien, more disconnected, more juvenile, more ruthless, and less able to accept his own mortality.
2. Like a child. But old.
3. So what’s great about Eleven? Think, for a second, about how hard he is on Amy in The Beast Below,
4. How surprised he is when she figures out what’s going on on Starship UK, which he totally, completely missed.

It’s almost as if Eleven has forgotten everything he learned as Ten, isn’t it? Ten delights in continuing Nine’s discovery of how extraordinary human beings can be. But he also discovers how flawed they are, and Eleven remembers this, but he forgets how one person can undo those mistakes with the power of love.

• I’ll pause for a moment for all of those who need to go and vomit, but there it is.
• That episode is early days for Eleven, and I believe that Amy saw something in him that he couldn’t have seen.
• Couldn’t have remembered.
• He could not just stand by and watch children cry.
• But look at his face when Amy delivers that line.

He’s missed what Amy saw in the star whale, because he doesn’t really remember that side of himself. Amy tells him what he’s like, and his response is kind of, “Oh yeah that sounds familiar.” Eleven remembers loving humanity, and he remembers why he loved them.

• But he’s forgotten how.
• Throughout Eleven’s saga, and especially toward the beginning, he’s exploring how to do that again.
• Eleven is the Alien Doctor.
• And it’s not just because he is an alien.
• It’s because an alien’s distance from the human world is necessary for his continued survival.
• Ten was more human than Time Lord.

That saved him a bunch of times, but ultimately, it destroyed him. Eleven is more Time Lord than human. But he’s trying to find that balance, trying to recover what it is that made Ten so great without bringing with it what made Ten weak. This is why it’s essential that he have almost no chemistry with any other character onscreen.

He can banter with the best of him, but his emotional responses are pretty flat. He’s annoyed or he’s disappointed, or he’s pretending. That’s not a failure on the part of Matt Smith. That’s the Eleventh Doctor brought to life in a way that makes complete sense. He doesn’t love in the way that Nine learns to, or in the way that Ten does.

He can’t love that way. But he still cares about certain people: Amy and Rory and River, Clara, the temporary companions in the Christmas specials. Another thing: notice how there is a proliferation of love around Eleven (see: Amy and Rory, River (let’s face it, she’s in that relationship by herself for the most part), Abigail and Kazran ) whereas previously, with Ten there was a proliferation of love within him, or involving him.

• Love works differently for Eleven, but it’s still important.
• He still makes sacrifices for love, for humanity.
• Not in the way that Ten would’ve, but in the way that only Eleven has done: Because he can.
• Because he must.
• Because it is what the Doctor does.
• Should anybody stand in his way, though, all bets are off.

Murder, direct and indirect, is on the table. Genocide is on the table. Eleven is the alien Doctor, and what is alien has made him powerful. Eleven is the Doctor who is not afraid to scar his soul in the name of what is right.
