The tour is the ’60s legends’ first tour for six years and will kick off on July 6 in Hull, after which they will play a mixture of indoor and outdoor shows across the country before signing off in Brighton on July 23. The nine-date run of shows will see the band return to Edinburgh for the first time in over 40 years, while they will also perform in Derby for the first time since 1966. The Who. CREDIT: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images “Having not toured the UK for six years, it’s great that at this time of our careers we have the chance to go to places that are not on the usual touring map – Edinburgh Castle and Derby, as well as the other cities across the country that we haven’t been to for decades, will make this very special for me,” said singer Roger Daltrey.

  • This opportunity will give our UK Who fans the chance to hear our current show, which, with the addition of an orchestra, takes our music to new heights.” Pete Townshend added: “Roger initially christened this tour with an orchestra ‘Moving On!’ I love it.
  • It is what both of us want to do.
  • Move on, with new music, classic Who music, all performed in new and exciting ways.

Taking risks, nothing to lose. I’m really looking forward to bringing this show to the UK.” Tickets will go on general sale on Friday, February 3, at 10am. The band has encouraged fans to donate £1 when they buy their ticket to Teenage Cancer Trust, which they have longtime patrons of.

Are The Who playing at Sandringham?

The Who perform at Royal Sandringham Estate The Who played their last scheduled show of 2023 with a performance at the Royal Sandringham Estate in Norfolk on Monday, August 28. They were the final act of a series of Heritage Live outdoor concerts that took place over the UK’s bank holiday weekend, following shows by Sir Van Morrison on Friday and Robbie Williams on Saturday and Sunday.

  • Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey performed with their usual fabulous band of touring musicians, backed by the Heart of England Orchestra that were with them throughout the Who Hits Back UK tour in July.
  • The supporting acts for The Who in Sandringham were Richard Ashcroft (lead singer and guitarist from the 90’s Brit Pop band The Verve) and the Lightning Seeds (English rock band from Liverpool).
  • These were the first major concerts held at the private country retreat of King Charles III, who has partnered with Heritage Live to host a series of environmentally sustainable summer events on the grounds of Sandringham over the next 5 years.

Earlier in the year, Pete commented about the event, “Very pleased and excited for The Who to be one of the first artists to perform at the Country Home of the British Royal family on the Sandringham Estate. Opening up the Estate to large scale concerts is a fantastic way of keeping us uplifted and enjoying congregation at what I’m sure will be a fabulous summer celebration.

  1. We can’t wait!” As part of Heritage Live’s green initiative, Pete and Roger marked the occasion by planting trees in the Royal Gardens before the concert.
  2. Pete stated, “Planting this tree is a great way of acknowledging Heritage Live’s sustainability initiative.
  3. I hope this Tilia ‘Winter Orange’ has a happy life in Sandringham Gardens.” Roger said, “I was very pleased to be asked by Heritage Live to plant this tree at Sandringham.

I am thrilled that the Laurel Oak has been planted adjacent to the oldest tree in Sandringham Gardens, a 700 year old Veteran Oak.” This special festival performance at Sandringham followed The Who’s successful UK summer Who Hits Back tour that wrapped up at the end of July, which featured a series of interesting outdoor venues, including castles, estates, rugby and cricket grounds, and the Eden Project.

Their music provoked explosive change and spanned what many critics declare is rock’s most elastic creative spectrum, with Pete Townshend’s songwriting moving between raw, prosaic, conceptual, and expressively literate. Their visionary sense of stagecraft headed by Roger Daltrey’s soaring vocal prowess is topped off by the band’s blistering rhythm section.

With both Roger and Pete delivering their memoirs in recent years (Pete’s Who I Am was released to much acclaim in 2012, and Roger’s autobiography, Thanks A Lot Mr. Kibblewhite; My Story, was embraced by critics in 2018) it’s fitting that the two remaining WHO members have shared their incredible legacy in literary fashion, for few bands have had a more lasting impact on the rock era and the reverberating pop culture than The Who.

Emerging in the mid-1960s as a new and incendiary force in rock n’ roll, their brash style and poignant storytelling garnered them one of music’s most passionate followings, with the legendary foursome blazing a searing new template for rock, punk, and everything after.

Inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall Of Fame in 1990, the band has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, placing 27 top-forty singles in the United States and United Kingdom and earning 17 Top Ten albums, including the 1969 groundbreaking rock opera Tommy, 1971’s pummeling Live At Leeds, 1973’s Quadrophenia and 1978’s Who Are You,

The Who debuted in 1964 with a trio of anthems “I Can’t Explain,” “The Kids Are Alright” and “My Generation.” Since then they have delivered to the world hits such as “Baba O’Riley,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” “Pinball Wizard,” Who Are You,” and,” You Better You Bet.” In 2008, they became the first rock band ever to be awarded the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors.

  1. The Who has performed all over the world including global music events for the Super Bowl XLIV Halftime Show in 2010 and closing the London 2012 Summer Olympics.
  2. The Who continued their charity work by playing a concert in January 2011 to raise money for trials of a new cancer treatment called PDT.
  3. In December 2012 they performed at the Hurricane Sandy Benefit in New York.

In January 2014 they played a set on the U.S. television special to support the charity Stand Up To Cancer. In November 2012 Daltrey, with Townshend at his side, launched Teen Cancer America. The charity is now established in the USA, with offices in Los Angeles and devoted Teen Cancer units being opened in hospitals all over the U.S.

The Who Release First Handful of 2023 Tour Dates Following up their The Who Hits Back! Tour of Canada and the U.S. in 2022, has added on a small number of dates in Europe in 2023. Marking the first time the band has played in Europe in seven years, the initial three dates include shows in Spain, France, and Germany and kick off in June.

  • Like their most recent North American dates, The Who will be backed by a full orchestra for their European tour, featuring orchestra conductor Keith Levenson, cellist Audrey Snyder, and violinist Katie Jacoby.

“It is wonderful that we can return to Europe after so long away, to play Berlin, Paris, and Barcelona, three of my favorite cities in the world,” in a statement. “We look forward to bringing our grand orchestral show which has received such great reviews so far and play some old-fashioned Who-style rock and roll songs from our back catalog as well.

We mix it all up in the most amazing evening of music.” Townshend added, “I have to say that this show is one that I personally enjoy as much as anything I have ever done in the 60 years I’ve been working with Roger.” Earlier in 2022, Townshend joked that Roger Daltrey “wants to sing until he drops,” and that this isn’t a final Who tour.

“No. It’s not a farewell tour,”, “Apart from anything else, we still have people who have tickets for the UK 2019 tour, We’re very, very keen to do that tour and we’ll be doing that in 2023.”
