Who rings from 0203 numbers

Answered By: Jonathan Lewis Date: created: Dec 13 2023

0203 Cons –

Scams — Perhaps the only real con of owning an 0203 number is their connection with scams. Many 0203 numbers are affiliated with computer virus scams where desktop owners are charged to remove fraudulent malware after taking a “courtesy Microsoft call”. Some people also realise many virtual businesses use 0203 numbers to give off the appearance of being based in London. This practice is also viewed as a con, by some people. In some cases, opting for a “traditional” 0207 number could be the right route.

On the whole, 0203 numbers are a natural choice for plenty of companies. Their central location, worldwide recognition and availability are big plus points for investing in the mysterious 0203 prefix. This is evidenced by how many authoritative organisations are beginning to use 0203 numbers for their external communications. Image courtesy of area-codes.org.uk Highly trusted organisations such as the BBC and The Guardian and Observer newspapers, as well as major corporations such as Bank of England and Transport for London, have all adopted 0203 numbers. When you take this into account, an 0203 prefix is an up and coming contact number.

What happens if you call back an unknown number

Answered By: Zachary Roberts Date: created: Jan 07 2023

You could be opening the door to scammers. – We’ve all had it happen: You look at your phone and notice a missed call from a familiar-looking number that isn’t in your contacts. Your first instinct might be to call back and see who it was, but that’s the last thing you should do.

  • You might assume calling back is safe because a number happens to be from your area code,
  • Is it your doctor? Your kid’s principal? A neighbor? Unfortunately, the answer is probably none of those, says Adam Levin, founder of CyberScout and author of Swiped: How to Protect Yourself in a World of Scammers, Phishers, and Identity Thieves,

Scammers “are adept at spoofing phone numbers for caller ID purposes,” he says. So just because a number shares your area code doesn’t mean the caller is from your town. Crooks purposely use familiar area codes to gain your trust. Don’t miss these other sneaky ways con artists win your trust,

You’d probably ignore an 800 number, but a number that comes from your hometown seems more likely to be someone you know. “People are curious and they’re counting on that,” says Levin. “It’s the concept that people think may have missed an important call.” At the very least, answering the phone or calling back makes you vulnerable to future scams, says Eva Velasquez, CEO and president of Identity Theft Resource Center,

“When you call back not only are you verifying the number is attached to a real person but that you’re willing to make the effort in calling back an unknown number,” she says. “This puts you at risk for scammers to call you at a different time and try to scam you with another ploy.” Want to get rid of some of the stress of calls from unknown numbers? Learn how to stop robocalls for good,

And at worst? For one thing, scammers could convince you to give out personal information, like your credit card or Social Security number. Even if you don’t give out personal information to the other line, though, that call could cost you major money. The numbers are sometimes hooked up with 900 numbers such as sex lines that charge by the minute—and it adds up fast, says Levin.

“You’re paying $17 and change for the first minute, and $9 and change for every minute after that,” he says. Plus, even just answering this four-word phrase phone scammers use with a one-word reply could let them steal your money without asking for more information.

  1. In general, you’re better off ignoring an unknown number and forgetting about it, says Velasquez.
  2. Any important news will be left in your voicemail,” she says.
  3. Be careful even if the person does leave a message, though.
  4. Just like scammers can pose as a credit card company when you answer, they can leave an important-sounding voicemail, too.

So if your bank leaves a voicemail, don’t just call back the number from the missed call. Find the official number online and dial that, suggests Levin. “Never trust—always verify,” he says. Watch out for these other phone call scams that could steal your money,

How do I stop a 020 number from calling me

Register with the Telephone Preference Service – The best way to reduce nuisance calls is to register for free with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS). They’ll add you to their list of numbers that don’t want to receive sales and marketing calls. It’s against the law for sales people from the UK or overseas to call numbers registered with TPS.

  • Registering won’t stop automated marketing calls, also known as ‘computer generated calls’.
  • This is because the law only applies to people not computers.
  • You should talk to your telephone provider about how to stop these calls.
  • Registering with TPS also won’t stop calls from scammers.
  • Find out how to report a scam,

To register with TPS you’ll need your:

phone number postcode email address

The quickest way to register is to fill in the TPS online registration form on the TPS website. If you can’t use the online form, you can register with TPS by phone instead: TPS 24 hour automated registration Telephone: 0345 070 0707 You can also register from your mobile phone by texting ‘TPS’ and your email address to 85095.

If you still get nuisance calls 28 days after registering with TPS, it might be because you gave the caller your number. Tell the individual caller you don’t want to be contacted again, and they should stop calling you. You might also still get calls from companies that don’t follow the regulations. You can complain about companies that ignore the law on the TPS website.

Should I answer a number I don’t Recognise

Answered By: Zachary Taylor Date: created: May 06 2023

Protecting yourself from telephone scams – There are a number of ways you can protect yourself from becoming a victim of a scam by phone. Reject cold calls. Sign up for a call blocking service. This might not stop all scam calls but it will stop cold-callers.

If you receive a phone call from someone you don’t know, always ask for the name of the person you are speaking to and who they work for. Check this information by calling the company’s office on a different phone line in case the caller is holding the line open. Never give out your personal, full credit card or online account details unless you made the call and the phone number came from a trusted source.

Never assume that someone is who they say they are just because the number on your caller display matches that of the organisation you know. Scammers can clone telephone numbers of organisations they want to impersonate and make the number appear on your caller ID display.

How do I find out where this number is from?

Download Article Download Article Want to find out the location of a phone number who called or texted you? There are many simple and free ways to trace a phone number’s location! Although you can’t track a number down to an exact map location without GPS, you can still find its general region, and sometimes details like the owner’s name, address, and carrier.

  1. 1 Understand that you can’t track a phone’s exact location. The methods used by police and government agencies to track a cell phone rely on telephone carrier information which must be subpoenaed by a court order, making it impossible for you to replicate these methods.
    • Since it is impossible to trace a phone’s exact location, avoid using third-party apps or services which claim to be able to track phone numbers. At best, these services don’t work, and they will often scam you or steal your information.
  2. 2 Check your phone’s caller ID, Most modern smartphones and digital handsets come with built-in caller ID which will announce the city to which the phone number is registered. If your phone shows a city and state (or region) for an incoming call, this should be enough to tell you where the person’s phone number was registered. Advertisement
  3. 3 Reference the phone’s area code. The three digits in a set of parentheses in any United States area code refers to the region in which the number was registered.
    • The easiest way to look up an area code’s coverage is by typing the area code followed by “area code” into a search engine (e.g., Google).
  4. 4 Search for the number on social media. While this isn’t guaranteed to work by any means, searching for the phone number on social media may bring up results for specific people. Social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter allow users to post their current location, so you may be able to see the person’s updated location even if their phone number’s location is out of date.
    • Most social media services keep your phone number private by default, so the person in question will most likely have to make their phone number public for this to work.
  5. 5 Try calling the number. If all else fails, you can always call the phone number and politely ask the person for information. If the call is coming from a typical person or a small company, explaining that you’re receiving calls from them and you don’t know who they are will usually be enough to prompt the caller to tell you why they’re calling at the very least.
    • If the phone number belongs to a corporation, you may have to navigate through an automated process before you can speak to a real person. Most corporations announce their affiliation upon reaching the automated assistant, so you should at least be able to find out who’s calling.
    • If you don’t know the phone number because the caller is masking their number, you can unmask the number and then call it from a friend’s phone to see if the caller picks up.

    • A spam rating (e.g., “Low” for personal numbers)
    • The first letter of the phone owner’s first and last name
    • The phone number’s registration location (city and state)

If the call is coming from a typical person or a small company, explaining that you’re receiving calls from them and you don’t know who they are will usually be enough to prompt the caller to tell you why they’re calling at the very least.
    • If the phone number belongs to a corporation, you may have to navigate through an automated process before you can speak to a real person. Most corporations announce their affiliation upon reaching the automated assistant, so you should at least be able to find out who’s calling.
    • If you don’t know the phone number because the caller is masking their number, you can unmask the number and then call it from a friend’s phone to see if the caller picks up.
