Who dies in GREY’s Anatomy crash?
Plot – After their plane crashes in the woods, Dr. Meredith Grey ( Ellen Pompeo ), Dr. Derek Shepherd ( Patrick Dempsey ), Dr. Cristina Yang ( Sandra Oh ), Dr. Mark Sloan ( Eric Dane ), Dr. Lexie Grey ( Chyler Leigh ) and Dr. Arizona Robbins ( Jessica Capshaw ) desperately fight to stay alive.
- Meredith is relatively unscathed, while the rest have serious injuries: the pilot, Jerry ( James LeGros ), has a major spine injury, and Yang dislocates her arm.
- Robbins has an open femur fracture, and Sloan has serious internal injuries, though initially adrenaline keeps him on his feet.
- Shepherd is sucked out the side of the plane and awakens alone in the woods, his mangled hand having been pushed through the door of the plane.
However, none are in as bad shape as Lexie, who is crushed under a piece of the plane. While Meredith searches for Shepherd, Yang and Sloan try to move the debris off Lexie. Eventually, the two realize that they cannot save Lexie, so Sloan holds Lexie’s hand while she dies, telling her that he loves her.
As Sloan tells her of the life the two were meant to have together, Lexie dies with a smile on her face just as Meredith and Yang are approaching. Lexie’s death devastates Meredith, who is still desperately trying to find her husband. Eventually, she and Shepherd reunite, and she and Cristina try to fix his hand as best as they can.
Meanwhile, back at Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital, no one is aware of what has happened to the other doctors. Dr. Richard Webber ( James Pickens, Jr.) prepares the annual dinner for the departing residents, which Dr. Alex Karev ( Justin Chambers ), Dr.
April Kepner ( Sarah Drew ) and Dr. Jackson Avery ( Jesse Williams ) are dreading. Avery makes the choice to take a job offer at Tulane Medical Center, and he and Kepner share a moment. Dr. Ben Warren ( Jason George ) and Dr. Miranda Bailey ( Chandra Wilson ) decide to get married, even though Warren is going to start his surgical internship in Los Angeles,
After realizing Dr. Teddy Altman ( Kim Raver ) was offered a chief position at United States Army Medical Command and is refusing to leave Seattle out of loyalty, Dr. Owen Hunt ( Kevin McKidd ), the chief of surgery, fires her to free her from the hospital where her husband died.
- As the episode ends, Hunt picks up his messages to discover the surgical team never made it to Boise, Idaho,
- The residents, finally excited to celebrate at Webber’s dinner, are left waiting for their stranded friends.
- The remaining crash survivors are left struggling to stay awake as their last match goes out.
In the closing monologue, Meredith repeats the opening to the speech that Webber gave in the pilot episode of the series.
Why was Mark Sloan killed off?
Season 9 of Grey’s Anatomy began with the characters saying goodbye to Eric Dane’s Mark Sloan. Here’s how and why McSteamy was killed off. Fans of Grey’s Anatomy have seen many of their favorite characters leave or die, among those Eric Dane’s Mark Sloan – here’s why he was killed off. Created by Shonda Rhimes, Grey’s Anatomy debuted on ABC in 2005, and even though it was initially planned as a midseason replacement, it was so well received it has lived on for over 10 seasons and shows no signs of stopping soon.
Sadly, living for so long also means not all actors can stay forever, and the series has now said goodbye to most of its original cast. Grey’s Anatomy, like other medical dramas, follows the lives of surgical interns, residents, and attendings as they do their best to juggle their professional and personal lives, which more often than not end up mixing.
The series is led by Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), who viewers met as an intern at Seattle Grace Hospital, and who is now Head of General Surgery. Upon her arrival at the hospital, Meredith (and viewers) met the team of attendings, among those Mark Sloan (Eric Dane), best remembered now as “McSteamy”.
Mark was Derek Shepherd’s childhood friend who also brought drama to his life as he had an affair with his wife, Addison Montgomery. Mark changed a lot during his time in the series, and by season 8, he had a daughter with Callie and was still struggling with his feelings for Lexie Grey, even though he was in a relationship with Julia.
In the final two episodes of season 8, Mark, Lexie, Derek, Meredith, Cristina Yang, and Arizona Robbins flew to assist in a surgery at a hospital in Boise. The plane crashed, and Mark found Lexie under debris, but was unable to save her. Lexie died, but not before Mark came clean about his feelings for her. Eric Dane’s departure was announced in 2012, and he expressed his gratitude towards Rhimes and the rest of the production crew of Grey’s Anatomy, with Rhimes later adding that Dane didn’t “come to that decision lightly”, and they decided it was the right time to end Mark’s storyline.
A year later, in an interview with EW, Dane opened up about leaving Grey’s Anatomy, saying that the series is a world and not just about a character, and the storylines were already heading in different directions. He then saw an opportunity to leave the show as he was already interested in something else – and that something was the series The Last Ship, which he said was a chance he couldn’t pass up.
Rhimes later justified the decision of killing Mark instead of letting him go in a different way by saying she ” had to do what was right for the integrity of the character “, and this way Lexi and Mark ” get to be together, in a way “. Grey’s Anatomy isn’t the best when writing characters out, as killing them is the writers’ go-to solution, and Mark Sloan’s death is definitely one of the most heartbreaking ones, not only because of how it happened but also because he was a fan-favorite.
Why was Derek killed off of GREY’s anatomy
Summary –
Patrick Dempsey departed from Grey’s Anatomy in season 11, as his character, Derek Shepherd, had a romantic relationship with Meredith Grey. Shonda Rhimes explains that Derek had to die in Grey’s Anatomy for the sake of the storyline, as leaving his wife and children would make him a jerk. Dempsey’s departure from Grey’s Anatomy was controversial, with murmurs of on-set issues. However, Dempsey clarified that his decision to leave was personal, as he wanted to sp end more time with his family.
Creator Shonda Rhimes explains why Grey’s Anatomy had to kill Derek Shepherd. Patrick Dempsey’s character was almost as synonymous with the show as Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey when the character unexpectedly died in Grey’s Anatomy season 11. As the show’s original leading man, his and Meredith’s love story had been a pillar of the medical drama’s storytelling for almost a decade.
- Hence, it was shocking when Derek unexpectedly died in a car crash, leaving many viewers devastated.
- While Grey’s Anatomy already had its fair share of deaths, Dempsey’s fatal accident ranked as one of the most gut-wrenching.
- Years after the horrific plot twist, Rhimes explains in her Masterclass (which was recorded longer before the writers’ strike) why they had no choice but to kill off the character.
She also discusses why Christina Yang was written off with a feel-good storyline. Like Dempsey’s role, Sandra Oh’s character was so beloved, but at least she got a happy ending in Grey’s Anatomy, Read her full quote below: Derek Shepherd cannot leave Meredith Grey.

Storylines – Sadie Harris first appears in the season 5 episode “These Ties That Bind”, in which it is made known that she was once a very close friend of Meredith Grey ( Ellen Pompeo ). - Having joined Seattle Grace Hospital as a surgical intern, Harris begins a friendship with fellow intern Lexie Grey ( Chyler Leigh ), Meredith Grey’s sister.
- The hospital’s interns are frustrated with their lack of surgical opportunities, so Harris cuts her own shoulder and then lets the interns stitch it back together.

- Following the surgery fiasco, Harris approaches the hospital’s chief of surgery Richard Webber ( James Pickens, Jr.), and claims responsibility for the incident.
- He informs her that the reason she has not been fired is because of his personal friendship with her father.
Later, she flirts with Callie Torres ( Sara Ramirez ), although the relationship is never pursued. Harris continues to pursue a friendship with Lexie Grey, even going as far as to help her cover up Lexie Grey’s blooming relationship with Mark Sloan ( Eric Dane ).
- In “Before and After”, during a competition among the interns set up by Izzie Stevens ( Katherine Heigl ), George O’Malley ( T.R.
- Night ) notices Harris’ lack of medical knowledge.

Does Meredith turn herself in?
Is Meredith Grey going to jail on Grey’s Anatomy? – Meredith’s legal issues began in the last few episodes of Season 15. When a patient came in whose father didn’t have documentation (or the money to private pay for her care), Meredith put her own daughter’s name down.
- The motivations for the insurance fraud were noble, but the hospital soon caught on.
- Meredith was fired, as was Alex Karev and Richard Weber.
- DeLuca tried to take the fall for the matter, and he even went to jail briefly too. Dr.
- Grey turned herself in during the Season 15 finale.
- She got an excellent lawyer, who worked out a deal that she would just have to complete her community service hours and attend a court hearing.
But, Meredith left her community service early one day when she had to speak to Dr. Bailey about the scathing article Meredith wrote about Grey Sloan Memorial. Article continues below advertisement Then, when her court date arrived, Meredith’s daughter, Zola, had complications in conjunction with a spina bifida procedure she had years earlier.
Meredith refused to leave her daughter’s bedside while she went into surgery, and she was given jail time as a result. In the promo for the Oct.31 episode, which is aptly centered around Halloween, Meredith is concerned that she won’t be back in time to trick-or-treat with her three kids. Article continues below advertisement Meredith’s jail sentence will likely be as long as the community service hours that she missed.
Considering she spent most of the time she was at community service doing other things (like FaceTiming in for a surgery and running a free clinic for the other workers), there’s potential that Meredith could be in jail for a few days. It is unclear what her sentence is.
Who dies first in Grey’s?
‘Now Or Never’ (S5, E24): George O’Malley – In one of the more heartbreaking moments in season 5, everyone was taken aback to discover that George O’Malley was the mysterious patient that had been hit by a bus. They had only discovered this when he wrote “007” in Meredith’s hand. This can be seen as the first big death of a main character on the show, as George was part of the original intern group and no one imagined him ever leaving.
Does Arizona lose her leg
Arizona Robbins, played by actress Jessica Capshaw. Robbins had her left leg amputated in the season premiere episode ‘Going Going Gone,’ and the producers wanted a prosthetic leg Capshaw could walk and stand in, giving her the appearance of having a transfemoral amputation, according to A Step Ahead Prosthetics.

Meredith is knocked unconscious by the explosion. There is a revival of the “shower scene” from the first part, but with a more serious tone: the fully clothed Izzie and Cristina wash blood off of a stunned Meredith as George looks on.
Both Dr. Bailey’s husband, and the man who had the explosive embedded in his body, survive. At the end of the episode, Preston and Derek become friends, overcoming their initial rivalry in the series beginning, and call each other by their first names. Cristina says “I love you, too” to a sleeping Preston.
Derek comes to visit Meredith and says, “You almost died today,” and Meredith tells him that she can’t remember their last kiss. Derek recalls the kiss for her, telling her that she “smelled like some kind of flower,” which Meredith says was lavender, and then he leaves.
Does Izzie come back?
Alex Karev – When Alex Karev discovered her history as a model, he didn’t waste any time in putting up her lingerie advertisements all over Seattle Grace Hospital, Despite the incident, she saw through Alex’s shallow, callous exterior and befriended him, to the shock of her friends. Soon afterwards, she sent him divorce papers and he signed them. When Meredith needed letters for her trial, Alex called Izzie, and in their conversation she revealed that she had given birth to twins, using a frozen embryo that she and Alex had saved when she was starting her cancer treatment.
Why did Lexie leave the show
Chyler Leigh chose to leave Grey’s Anatomy – This was not some sort of exit just for creative reasons. The character wasn’t written out as a way to create extra drama or sadness. It’s not like Grey’s Anatomy needed any of that. Instead, it was because Chyler Leigh chose to leave the show.
It’s worth noting that Eric Dane also chose to leave the show at the same time. With the two characters together, there was a creative element in their exits. After all, it wasn’t like Mark was just going to leave the hospital and leave his daughter behind. A permanent exit for both was necessary. Leigh left the show for two main reasons.
The first was that she wanted to spend more time with her family. Working on Grey’s Anatomy means long days, and her family lived on the other side of the country. The other reason was because she felt like Lexie’s character had grown as much as she could.

What happened to Arizona Robbins
Storylines – Following the death of Dr. Jordan Kenley, Chief Webber ( James Pickens, Jr.) replaces his head of pediatric surgery with Dr. Arizona Robbins, a graduate of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Robbins has a romantic interest in orthopedic fifth-year resident Callie Torres ( Sara Ramirez ) and later goes on to kiss her.
The two embark on a relationship, but when Torres’ father, Carlos ( Héctor Elizondo ), learns of the relationship, he threatens to cut her off financially unless Torres returns home with him. When Torres’ father returns to Seattle and continues to reject his daughter’s sexuality, Robbins is able to convince him to reconsider.
She tells Mr. Torres that her father was able to accept her own sexuality, as she promised him she was still the “good man in a storm” he raised her to be, and that Torres is still the same person Mr. Torres raised. Torres is dismayed to learn that Robbins does not want children, and the two come to a conclusion that they cannot continue their relationship, since they both want different things.
- However, after a shooter enters Seattle Grace with a vendetta for Derek Shepherd ( Patrick Dempsey ), Lexie Grey ( Chyler Leigh ), and Richard Webber ( James Pickens, Jr.), they are in lockdown together, and the two reconcile.
- Robbins receives word that she has been given a grant to go to Malawi, and become a doctor there.
In the end, Torres is shown to have accepted this as well and has decided to leave with Robbins. However, a fight at the airport results in Robbins leaving for Malawi without Torres, ending their relationship. She returns, hoping to rekindle her relationship with Torres, but is initially rejected.
Eventually, Torres reveals that she is pregnant with Mark Sloan ( Eric Dane )’s baby. Robbins accepts the situation, and she and Torres restart their relationship. Torres gifts Robbins with a weekend getaway, and Robbins proposes to Torres. After proposing, the two get in a car crash leaving Torres in critical condition.
A series of surgeries follows, including the delivery of her premature baby, along with emotional breakdowns of both Sloan and Robbins. Upon the awakening of Torres, she accepts her marriage proposal, and the two are married by Miranda Bailey ( Chandra Wilson ).
As the fifth year residents are coming close to the end of their residency, Robbins urges Alex Karev ( Justin Chambers ) to work under her. At the end of the season 8, Robbins is hurt badly in a plane crash, resulting in her left leg being amputated. In the aftermath of the plane accident, in which Sloan and Lexie Grey were killed, the hospital is sued and eventually found liable for negligence.
Each victim including Shepherd, Meredith Grey ( Ellen Pompeo ), Cristina Yang ( Sandra Oh ), and Robbins herself must receive $15 million of compensation, which leads the hospital to a near bankruptcy as the insurance companies refuse to pay. Those doctors and Callie buy the hospital with the help of the Harper-Avery Foundation to prevent it from closing, and each become members of the new directing board.
Robbins is initially cold towards Callie because she was the one who decided for an amputation. She also struggles with body image issues, but they slowly reconcile as Robbins tries to adapt to her new life. When Dr. Lauren Boswell ( Hilarie Burton ) arrives at the hospital to reconstruct the face of a baby and flirts with Robbins, she is flattered that a stranger still finds her attractive despite knowing about her injury and the two have a one-night stand.
After finding out that Arizona cheated on her with Lauren, Callie kicks Arizona out of their apartment. They also let out their true feelings about the accident and more is revealed about how they actually have felt. Callie initially agrees to couples therapy, but she shows up at the office only to tell Arizona that she isn’t going in.
Arizona gets drunk with April for a laugh while Callie attends a fundraiser. Arizona is led to believe that she and Leah slept together, however all they did was dance and make grilled cheese sandwiches after watching Derek perform surgery on film. Arizona pursues a sexual relationship with Leah but cuts ties with her when Callie asks her to come back home.
It is revealed that Arizona became pregnant via a sperm donor prior to sleeping with Lauren, but later miscarried. They decided to try again for a second child, but after agreeing that Callie would carry it, Callie went to see an OB/GYN and discovered that she had developed adhesions in her uterus since Sofia’s birth, meaning she can’t carry any more children.
When she told Arizona, Arizona offered to carry the baby, but Callie decided that since they’re still on unsteady footing that if something goes wrong, they won’t make it and she doesn’t want to put them in that position. They agree to postpone their plans to have another baby. However, in the season finale of Season 10 it is implied that Callie and Arizona’s dream of having another child may come by means of a surrogate.
At the beginning of Season 11, Callie and Arizona decide to have a baby by surrogate and Arizona applies for a fetal surgery fellowship with Dr. Herman. Arizona, with a heavy workload because of the fellowship, and Callie have an argument in the waiting room, and they choose to go to therapy together, resulting in a 30-day break.
- Arizona believes that the break strengthened their relationship and made her realize that she needs Callie – Callie on the other hand declares that the break gave her a taste of the freedom that she has been missing.
- Callie walks away and the two get a divorce later.
- Callie wants to take Sofia and move to New York with Penny but Arizona does not want to be separated from her daughter so she hires a lawyer and they go to court for a custody battle.
After a long case, Arizona wins sole custody of Sofia, but in the end she ends up sharing Sofia with Callie because she thinks that ‘both of Sofia’s moms deserve to be happy’. Callie is referenced occasionally by Arizona and Sofia after her departure from the show.
Why did Christina Yang leave?
