Since signing from Borussia Dortmund in June for an initial €103million (£88m; $110m) fee that could rise to a club record, the England midfielder has scored five goals in his first five matches and endeared himself to everyone associated with Madrid.

It has been a swift and heady rise for Bellingham, who only made his professional debut as a lanky 16-year-old at Birmingham City in the EFL Cup in August 2019.

In the four years since, he has made the bold move to Germany, become a darling of the fans who make up Borussia Dortmund’s famed yellow wall and can now add the Bernabeu to the list of stadiums at which he is adored. But how has he changed as a player in that time? And what is it like to play with (and against) Bellingham? The Athletic has spoken to some of those who know the 20-year-old best from his days at Birmingham and Dortmund to find out.

Bellingham made his debut for Birmingham in the early weeks of the 2019-20 season — becoming the youngest player in the club’s history at 16 years and 38 days. That season became a (successful) relegation fight in the Championship but the teenager stood out for his maturity — and one particular skill he displayed in training — according to then team-mate Maxime Colin.

Now 31, full-back Colin currently plays for Metz in France’s Ligue 1. Colin: “He was still studying for his GCSEs. A lot of the time after training we were eating in the canteen and he was in his school uniform — a lot of us had children and had to pick them up after training. He chopped one of our defenders and it was almost a shock. We weren’t even laughing or anything, we were just thinking, ‘Who’s this young guy?’.

Training was where I really started to think, ‘OK, he’s special’ because he was literally the best. At the end of the session, you would always do a small-sided game, and if you had Jude on your team you were pretty sure to win — even though he was only 16. “He grew as a leader over the years. When he first joined up with us, he was talking but I wouldn’t say that he was the leader that he is now.

He had a good attitude because he was humble and respectful to everyone. 1. Nohan Kenneh played 13 times alongside Bellingham across the England Under-15, Under-16 and Under-17 sides — and faced him in a youth fixture for Leeds United against Birmingham before that.

Sam Morsy, a veteran defensive midfielder who currently captains Ipswich Town in the Championship, played against him twice in that division while at Wigan Athletic in 2019-20 — beating Birmingham both times, 1-0 and 3-2.

The now 32-year-old exchanged numbers with Bellingham after one of those games and they remain in touch. Morsy: “You never play against someone in the Championship and expect them to go on to play for Real Madrid — I’d be lying if I said I’d predicted that. I told him that he’d done really well and that he had a really bright future.

It’s easy to get disheartened when your team aren’t doing well but I said, ‘Keep going, keep expressing yourself. See what you can do’ — and that’s what he’s done every year. “I congratulated him when he got the move to Madrid. He’s from the Midlands — the same as me — so it feels even more special to have him playing there.

“Birmingham City to Real Madrid isn’t a natural development. He’s had to work really, really hard and that’s what he’s done: he’s improved every year.” Bellingham has taken this move to the Bernabeu in his stride. He has formed an instant connection with the fans and his new team-mates, has started learning Spanish and is benefiting from playing a more advanced role in head coach Carlo Ancelotti’s system than he did at Dortmund.

He also moved on some loyal employees who understood the fabric of the club, sending morale spiralling to an all-time low from which it is only just recovering. 1. That Birmingham retained their Championship status during his time at the club felt like nothing short of a miracle, although in fairness that was partly helped by the Bellingham sale, which Ren did manage well.
2. Ristjaan Speakman, the academy manager at the time, gained Ren’s trust after building up a tight relationship with the Bellingham family.

The club pushed hard to make sure everything was laid out to assist the midfielder on his journey, partly to aid his development but also to recover a huge transfer fee when he moved on. When Garry Monk was appointed in March 2018, Ren and Speakman explained how highly Bellingham, then just 15 years old, was rated.

• Monk included the youngster in first-team training around Christmas in 2018, but advocated a more gradual introduction during the season.
• When Monk was sacked in 2019, his successor, his former assistant Pep Clotet, was encouraged by the club to give the midfielder a platform to shine.
• Without that level of support from Birmingham, there was a risk of Bellingham leaving without signing a scholarship and professional deal.

Instead, he stuck around and signed pro terms when he turned 17 in June 2020. That ensured the club would be compensated when he left. By the end of his only season in Birmingham’s first team, Bellingham had made 41 Championship appearances and was ready to join Dortmund, who won him over with a detailed presentation explaining how he would thrive there.
