Who are the surprise guests at Glastonbury 2023
Photograph: Matt Cardy Yet again, Worthy Farm delivered plenty of pinch-me moments – including some very unexpected appearances Ah, Glastonbury, There’s nowhere quite like it on the planet. Time Out was there on the ground to report on all of the fun, and boy, was there a shit ton of it. There were also plenty of weird things going on too – with surprise star appearances, not-so-secret sets and just a pinch of drama. Here are 25 of the most surprising moments from the 2023 festival.
Rick Astley and Blossoms packed out the Woodsies tent to play a surprise set of Smiths covers, just because. People had some pretty weird ideas about who Elton John’s surprise guests would be. Would it be Lady Gaga, Lil Nas X, Dua Lipa, Kate Bush, Prince Harry (!), Ellie Goulding, Dolly Parton, Eminem, Pulp, Chris Martin, Matty Healy, Blur, Rick Astley, Britney Spears or Michael Eavis? Lana Del Rey was half an hour late for her set because ‘her hair takes a long time to do’. and led an a-capella crowd sing-along to ‘Video Games’ when her set was cut short, before she was escorted off stage by security. Someone in the crowd was carrying a flag of King Charles’s fingers. Enough said. The Pretenders brought out Johnny Marr, Dave Grohl and Paul McCartney. Gasps were heard. Dermot O’Leary played a DJ set. It kinda slapped. Central Cee performed ‘Sprinter’ with Dave. He also welcomed a very confused-looking kid to the stage, saying: ‘He’s a natural!’ Fred again. played a not-so-secret set with The Blessed Madonna, which shut down the Temple stage because there were too many people. Hot-air balloons flying over the farm added extra sparkle to Lizzo’s stage show. Francis Bourgeois was spotted in the wristband queue wearing a very on-brand Southern Railway cap. Jake Shears performed in the the scorching NYC Downlow replica club on Saturday night. Sweat was literally dripping from the ceiling. Tilda Swinton joined Max Richter for a spoken-word performance and they were interrupted by a naked protester. There were spectacularly long queues for Sistxrhood, a club exclusively for women, non-binary and trans people. Rina Sawayama called out Matty Healy before playing her song ‘STFU!’ ‘I wrote this because I was sick & tired of these micro-aggressions,’ she said. ‘This goes out to a white man that watches Ghetto Gaggers and mocks Asian people on a podcast.’ Go on girlie. Lewis Capaldi struggled to finish his set but the crowd were on hand to belt out the words instead. Cate Blanchett wiggled on stage in a yellow suit to Sparks’ ‘The Girl is Crying in Her Latte’. and was allegedly spotted backstage dancing to Shygirl’s ‘Coochie (a Bedtime Story)’. Iconic. Joe Wicks hosted a workout class for 2,000 people. Because there’s nothing better than a bit of HIIT after a night on the lash. David Hockney debuted his first AI-generated artwork on the Pyramid Stage, which used tech to remove the figures from his 2014 painted series ‘The Dancers’. On Thursday morning, thousands of fans descended onto Green Fields to attempt to create the world’s largest human peace sign. It was beautiful. Debbie Harry mashed up Donna Summer’s ‘I Feel Love’ with riffs from The Sex Pistols’ ‘God Save The Queen’. What a queen. If anyone served c*nt this year, it was Lil Nas X, who swapped from white fluffy trousers to a shimmering blue number with a bull’s head over the crotch. He also brought out Jack Harlow for ‘Industry Baby’. Cat Stevens shouted out Ricky Gervais, who is apparently a big fan and celebrated his birthday yesterday. Ew. Elton John’s four surprise guests? In reality, they were less glitzy than imagined. We got Jacob Lusk of Gabriels, twenty-year-old singer-songwriter Stephen Sanchez, Brandon Flowers of The Killers and Rina Sawayama. Still, what a show.

Who closed Glastonbury 2023
Glastonbury 2023 has come to an end, culminating in a spectacular performance by Elton John, which could potentially be his final show in the UK. The gates of Glastonbury have officially closed, drawing an end to an extraordinary five-day musical extravaganza in the UK.
More than 210,000 revellers flooded into Somerset’s Worthy Farm, for the world’s largest greenfield music festival, The lineup boasted headliners of Arctic Monkeys, Guns N’Roses, and the iconic Elton John, who graced the stage for a momentous Glastonbury debut, potentially marking his final UK performance.
From Lana Del Rey’s set being dramatically cut short, to the electrifying surprise performance by the Foo Fighters, the festival brimmed with unforgettable moments. If you feel you missed out on the magic, fear not, as we’ve put together a guide on all the major talking points from this year’s festival.
Was johnny marr at Glastonbury 2023?
The Pretenders treated fans to a star-studded Glastonbury set which featured guest appearances from Johnny Marr and Dave Grohl, as well as a greeting from Sir Paul McCartney. The US-British rock band were a surprise addition to the Park Stage’s Saturday line-up, only announcing their 7.45pm slot at Worthy Farm earlier this week.
- After the rock band rolled through hits from their back catalogue, they reunited on stage with The Smiths’ musician Marr, who had a spell in the rock band in the late 1980s.
- Ahead of introducing him, frontwoman Chrissie Hynde said: “Glastonbury has so many memories but my favourite is seeing my guitar heroes.” She noted that their guitarist James Walbourne was one and Marr was another.
Marr joined them for a rendition of hits including Back On The Chain Gang and Don’t Get Me Wrong. The rockers shocked the crowd further as they brought the Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl on for the end of their set. Ahead of his reveal, Hynde told the crowd: “Apparently there’s a drummer kicking around back stage”, with the field erupting into cheers when his name was announced.
- The performance marked the former Nirvana drummer’s second set of the festival after he took to the Pyramid stage on Friday for a surprise set which had been originally billed as mystery band The Churnups.
- Together they played a number of classic songs including I’ll Stand By You.
- The rock band opened their set with a new track, titled Losing My Sense Of Taste, and later slashed through guitar riffs on Time The Avenger, with Hynde saying afterwards: “Oh Glastonbury, how many memories, how many past loves, how many past lives.” They continued to rile up the crowd during Middle Of The Road, with Hynde whipping out the harmonica to close the song.
Hynde also delivered a poignant moment at one stage as she slowed down the tempo to sing Hymn To Her, getting the masses of fans to sing back the chorus to them. Finishing the song, she said: “That was for Meg Keene (Hynde’s friend who wrote the track).” As they signed off the set, Hynde went into the wings where Sir Paul had been watching on and gave him a hug.
How much will Elton get paid for Glastonbury?
Some great performers have headlined Glastonbury Festival this year, including Guns N’ Roses, Lana Del Ray and the Arctic Monkeys. Tonight, festival goers will see Elton John, playing his final UK gig on the Pyramid Stage. Elton’s husband David Furnish has revealed there will be four surprise guests during his set, as fans speculate it could be Harry Styles or Taron Egerton, who played him in the Rocketman biopic – and Britney Spears has also been rumoured.
Glastonbury is no doubt one of the biggest festivals of the year, for guests and the artists, but they might not be paid as much as you think, reports Mirror. Read more: Man dies at Glastonbury Festival after ‘medical incident’ – statement Over the years Glastonbury has had some massive headliners, including David Bowie, Beyoncé and Adele, and you might assume playing such a huge gig would mean the musicians are being compensated with a pretty hefty sum, however, you might be surprised to learn that it’s not as much as you’d think.
Festival co-organiser Emily Eavis, youngest daughter of the festival’s founder Michael Eavis, confirmed that artists get paid 10% less than what they are typically paid by other festivals. Guns N’ Roses headline the Pyramid stage as the sun sets (Image: Copyright (c) 2023 Shutterstock. No use without permission.) Although, its for a pretty good reason. This is because Glastonbury prefers to donate £2 million to charities every year, which dispels the myth that some headliners are paid £1million, as the number is likely much lower.
In 2017 interview with BBC Radio 6, she explained: “We’re not in a situation where we’re able to just give people enormous amounts of money. So we’re really grateful for the bands that we get because they’re basically doing it for the love of it.” Founder Michael once revealed that Coldplay and Paul McCartney were both paid around £200,000 for past headline sets.
He said at the time: “I paid £200,000 for Paul McCartney and for Coldplay, and although it sounds a lot, they could have charged me far more.” The exact number each 2023 headliner gets paid will be kept under wraps, but in an interview with Metro, music consultant specialising in live music venues and festivals Lyle Bignon, said: “The likes of Elton John and Guns N’ Roses, who have decades of global fame behind them, can likely command higher prices running into the £250,000+ range.” In an interview with Somerset Live, Bestival organiser Rob Da Bank revealed that Glastonbury’s budget is under £500,000 per headliner.
He said: “They cap their budget and even the headliners don’t get paid more than 500 grand, I think, which is cheap for some of the headliners and they’ve had a lot of them.” Although there’s no bigger UK festival than Glastonbury, it doesn’t pay its headliners more than others. For other UK festivals, headliners can earn upwards of £1million, according to Billboard.
The reason is that Glastonbury aims to raise money for charity, which means headliners are paid significantly less. Each year the festival raises funds for charities including Oxfam and Greenpeace, which means that they have a smaller budget, no doubt made even smaller by the cost of living crisis.
- But it’s not the money that draws huge performers to Glastonbury, it’s the festival’s reputation and acts can rake in huge amounts of money after performing.
- Emily told George Ezra’s podcast: “Because of the TV and because of the exposure that they get, they do go on to do really well afterwards, so they’ll sell records afterwards.
“So we’re saying ‘look, come and do this but even though there’s a small fee, we can almost guarantee afterwards you’ll make up for it’.” Story Saved You can find this story in My Bookmarks. Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.

He said: “The likes of Elton John and Guns N’ Roses, who have decades of global fame behind them, can likely command higher prices running into the £250,000+ range.” Glastonbury performers are said to get around 10 per cent less compared to other festivals, as organisers spend the rest of the money donating millions of pounds to charities every year. - Despite being asked numerous times about her absence, Dua is yet to comment.
- Instead of joining Elton on stage as he performed his last ever show in the UK, Dua shared photos on her Instagram story from a family dinner.

Sir Elton John has claimed that Dua Lipa missed his epic Glastonbury headliner set due to having a ‘long-standing commitment in New York’ Sources close to the Rocket Man told MailOnline that the pop star, who collaborates on his track Cold Heart, wouldn’t have been able to take part in a potential live performance on Sunday night due to being overseas (pictured in April 2021) Elton’s fans were also bemused by his performance of Don’t Go Breaking My Heart with singer Rina Sawayama, who joined him on stage instead of the original artist on the track Kiki Dee Instead of joining Elton on stage as he performed his last ever show in the UK, Dua shared photos on her Instagram story from a family dinner
- But MailOnline understands that Elton wanted to keep his highly anticipated performance ‘fresh’ and ‘unpredictable’, hence collaborating with acts such as Brandon Flowers on stage, which proved to be a surprise among the 200,000 strong audience.
- Dua last performed with Elton in November at the Los Angeles Dodgers Stadium during his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which ends next month in Sweden.
- Kiki Dee joined him for a rendition of their famous hit Don’t Go Breaking My Heart in LA the same night Dua performed, which was his last US show, but was also missing from his gig at Glastonbury.
- A source said: ‘Dua played a huge part in his Dodgers Stadium gig, which Elton was hugely grateful for.
- ‘There was a feeling he wanted his Glastonbury set to be different, bringing out surprise guests, and making it less predictable.
- ‘That’s not to say he wouldn’t have lapped up Dua appearing, if logistics made it straight forward.
- ‘But the fact she was in the US took her out of the equation.’
- Introducing the track Cold Heart, which went to No1 in 2021, Elton avoided saying Dua by name, telling the crowd: ‘The person I did this song with isn’t here, so I am going to ask you to sing her part please and sing it loud, here we go.’

- He later urged the crowd to singalong, saying ‘come on Dua, come on you guys.’
- Instead of Kiki Dee, who sang on the original Don’t Go Breaking My Heart, Elton introduced Rina Sawayama to the stage, calling the star ‘an extraordinary talent and one of my dear friends.’
- As well as The Killers’ frontman Brandon Flowers, Elton’s guests included lesser-known US singer Stephen Sanchez and Jacob Lusk of Gabriels, plus the London Community Gospel Choir.
- He explained his reason for inviting Stephen, who sang his own song Until I Found You, to join him on stage, saying: ‘When I chose my guests for this show, I wanted to have newer artists – save for one person.
‘And this next boy I heard last year on the radio in America. I couldn’t believe someone of 19 or 20 years of age could write a song like this. So, I’ve asked him to come to Glastonbury to sing his song.’
- Elton’s enormous fan base, who he thanked during his performance for supporting him throughout his 50-year career, hoped that as well as Dua, Britney Spears, who sings on his 2022 track Hold Me Closer, could have joined him on stage.
- Elton’s two-hour set was the first time he’d ever performed at Glastonbury’s Worthy Farm.
- Speaking about the gig to Radio One’s Clara Amfo, he said: ‘Never played it, but it’s come around at the best time in my career to play it and we’re going to have guests well I can’t tell you but it’s a different show to what people have been seeing on the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which is good, I didn’t want to do the same thing for Glastonbury.’
- He added: ‘It couldn’t be a more perfect ending to playing in Britain than to play at Glastonbury.’
- MailOnline has contacted Elton and Dua’s representatives for comment.

Is Taylor Swift at Glastonbury 2023?
Will Taylor Swift perform at Glastonbury 2023? – Taylor Swift will not be joining the line-up at this year’s Glastonbury festival. The full list of headline acts was unveiled in March, with Arctic Monkeys and Guns N’ Roses joining Sir Elton John as the top-billing artists.
- As Taylor was originally set to headline back in 2019, it’s likely that she will make her Glastonbury debut on the Pyramid Stage at some point in the future.
- Due to the pop star’s Eras Tour, there’s not a gap in her US dates that would easily allow her to swing by Worthy Farm for the British festival, which will take place from June 21 – 25.

He’s also performed on the Pyramid Stage in 2005 and 2013 with The Imposters, but not as a headliner. Does he count? Only you can decide.
