And while you might think that he and the other big names to perform would have pulled in the big bucks, that’s not necessarily the case. Preceding Elton as the headliners on Friday and Saturday were Arctic Monkeys and Gun N’ Roses respectively.

Meanwhile, hundreds of other acts played across the festival, including Lana Del Ray, Queens of the Stone Age, Manic Street Preachers, Foo Fighters – who were billed at The Churnups for their not-so-secret appearance – and many more. Crowds are treated to mammoth sets by the Pyramid Stage’s headliners, with Elton John completing two hours on Sunday night. He said at the time: “I paid £200,000 for Paul McCartney and for Coldplay, and although it sounds a lot, they could have charged me far more.” The exact number each 2023 headliner gets paid will be kept under wraps, but in an interview with Metro, music consultant specialising in live music venues and festivals, Lyle Bignon, said: “The likes of Elton John and Guns N’ Roses, who have decades of global fame behind them, can likely command higher prices running into the £250,000+ range.” In an interview with Somerset Live, Bestival organiser Rob Da Bank revealed that Glastonbury’s budget is under £500,000 per headliner.

He said: “They cap their budget and even the headliners don’t get paid more than 500 grand, I think, which is cheap for some of the headliners – and they’ve had a lot of them.” Although there’s no bigger UK festival than Glastonbury, it doesn’t pay its headliners more than others.

2. The reason is that Glastonbury aims to raise money for charity, which means headliners are paid significantly less.

Grohl also played a snippet of Metallica’s ‘Enter Sandman’, before launching into Black Sabbath ‘s iconic ‘Paranoid’ riff.

Of all the bands to play this weekend, the one least burdened by this problem has to be, It’s easy to forget just how broad and deep their discography goes, until you’re socked again and again with hit after hit; even with 75 minutes to play with there’s no room for Union City Blue, Picture This, Sunday Girl and so many more.

And aside from a couple of tepid latter day choices – the dull Doom or Destiny makes the sun-parched field suddenly feel very boggy – they show off that slate of hits with great panache. The wellspring for that charisma is very much Debbie Harry, who emerges wearing a CBGB T-shirt and futuristic visor, as if stalking a neon-lit cyberpunk reboot of the grimy New York the band emerged from in the late 1970s.

1. Let us be very real for a second and admit that she really cannot sing as well as she once could, particularly in the first half of the set.
2. She doesn’t attempt the top notes of Call Me, which really are the hinge of the song, and there’s a slightly airy, distracted feel at times to her vocals.
3. The rap to Rapture, once semi-authentically badass, is now delivered as if she’s reading out a grocery list pinned to a fridge on the other side of the kitchen.

But once she warms up, her voice does move into those higher rooms – Denis is given its requisite girlishness as a result – and there is so much untamed cool and unpredictable brio throughout. The “uh-toh-mic” utterance of Atomic was once the last word in po-faced NYC cool – Harry yells it here like a particularly lairy nuclear scientist who’s been given a promotion. Photograph: Ben Birchall/PA It’s pure theatre, and after she follows it up with Call Me – a back-to-back of songs that interrogate all the anxiety and erotic potential of the telephone – she has a very droll and disparaging sign off: “None of it is relevant today – we all have our phones in our pockets,” she says with operatic disdain.

• She is so riveting to watch, not least because she has one of pop’s great faces, with a smile that spears the heart with its mix of joy and faint malevolence.
• With Chris Stein retired from touring but Clem Burke still on drums, the rest of the band is populated by younger musicians – the lead guitarist gives Slash the previous night a run for his money with some showboating solos, and an ostentatious keytar is played with heroically casual insouciance on Call Me.

With their buzzcut sides, floppy fringes and sharp suits, they resemble a 1980s street-punk gang who have started a sideline in doing the accountancy for other 1980s street punk gangs. The exception is bassist Glen Matlock (the third ex-Sex Pistol to play this weekend after Generation Sex yesterday), whose tan and silvery mane make him look like the mafioso who’s funding the operation.

1. There’s a nice sibling-like feel to a moment where Harry moseys over and leans against him, Matlock taking the mic for a brief holler.
2. A robust performance of the superb Dev Hynes co-write Long Time shows that their later tunes can match their classics, but it’s Heart of Glass that has this gigantic Pyramid crowd waving in unison – a truly awesome sight.

By now Harry is dressed in a cowl made from shards of mirror, like a comic-book soothsayer stalking the mean streets of the Lower East Side. As she mellifluously sang earlier on, at age 77 she’s clearly not the kind of girl to give up just like that. This was corrected on 25 June to acknowledge that Hanging on the Telephone wasn’t the opening track.

How much does a headline act get paid at Glastonbury?

Elton John closed Glastonbury 2023 on Sunday night in what was billed as his last ever UK show. And while you might think that he and the other big names to perform would have pulled in the big bucks, that’s not necessarily the case. Preceding Elton as the headliners on Friday and Saturday were Arctic Monkeys and Gun N’ Roses respectively.

Meanwhile, hundreds of other acts played across the festival, including Lana Del Ray, Queens of the Stone Age, Manic Street Preachers, Foo Fighters – who were billed at The Churnups for their not-so-secret appearance – and many more. The festival routinely attracts the world’s biggest artists, both legendary and up-and-coming.

Crowds are treated to mammoth sets by the Pyramid Stage’s headliners, with Elton John completing two hours on Sunday night. In previous years, headliners have included the likes of David Bowie, Beyoncé and Adele, reports the Mirror, You might assume playing such a huge gig would mean the musicians are being compensated with a pretty hefty sum, so you might be surprised to learn that it’s not as much as you’d think.

He said at the time: “I paid £200,000 for Paul McCartney and for Coldplay, and although it sounds a lot, they could have charged me far more.” The exact number each 2023 headliner gets paid will be kept under wraps, but in an interview with Metro, music consultant specialising in live music venues and festivals, Lyle Bignon, said: “The likes of Elton John and Guns N’ Roses, who have decades of global fame behind them, can likely command higher prices running into the £250,000+ range.” In an interview with Somerset Live, Bestival organiser Rob Da Bank revealed that Glastonbury’s budget is under £500,000 per headliner.

He said: “They cap their budget and even the headliners don’t get paid more than 500 grand, I think, which is cheap for some of the headliners – and they’ve had a lot of them.” Although there’s no bigger UK festival than Glastonbury, it doesn’t pay its headliners more than others.

For other UK festivals, headliners can earn upwards of £1million, according to Billboard. The reason is that Glastonbury aims to raise money for charity, which means headliners are paid significantly less. Each year the festival raises funds for charities including Oxfam and Greenpeace, which means that they have a smaller budget, no doubt made even smaller by the cost of living crisis.

But it’s not the money that draws huge performers to Glastonbury, it’s the festival’s reputation and acts can rake in huge amounts of money after performing. Emily told George Ezra’s podcast: “Because of the TV and because of the exposure that they get, they do go on to do really well afterwards, so they’ll sell records afterwards.

Taylor Swift will not headline Glastonbury Festival 2024 after announcing an extra date to her tour next year in Dublin, which clashes with the event at Worthy Farm. It comes after exceptional demand for tickets to ‘The Eras’ tour – which is set to celebrate her studio albums.

It claimed the biggest first week of UK album sales in 2022 since Adele’s 30 was released in November 2021 and took the title of the most streamed album of the year in its opening week with 72.5 million streams across the seven days. The record follows after her previous eight UK chart-topping albums, all achieved consecutively: 2012’s Red, 2014 release 1989, 2017’s Reputation, 2019’s Lover, 2020’s Folklore, 2020’s Evermore and re-recordings Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and Red (Taylor’s Version), both released in 2021.

Tickets are going on sale for those who pre-registered in the next few weeks and are staggered so ticketing systems do not become overwhelmed.
