THE MASKED SINGER Warning: This article contains spoilers from the season 9 finale of The Masked Singer, And just like that, another season of The Masked Singer has come to an end. It finished much the same way it began, with Medusa slithering her way to victory by wowing the panelists with her high-octane performances.

This time around, that included “Elastic Heart” by Sia and “Welcome to the Black Parade” by My Chemical Romance. Hers weren’t the only powerhouse vocals to bring the house down, though. Fellow finalist Macaw brought the panel to tears with his performances of “Hold Back the River” by James Bay and “All by Myself” by Eric Carmen.

In fact, the entire finale was incredibly emotional for everyone. After Macaw was revealed to be American Idol finalist David Archuleta (shout out to Ken Jeong and Nicole Scherzinger for getting it right!), Jeong broke down in tears as he told the singer about how, when his wife was pregnant and on bedrest, and their babies were fighting for their lives, he and his wife would watch Archuleta on American Idol,

• You were like a ray of light to my family, and it’s an honor to see you in this capacity,” Jeong told him, “Thank God for you, I love you.” The sweet moment ended with a rare group hug from all the panelists, who surrounded Jeong with love.
• Macaw and Medusa both got to share their emotional journeys on the show as well.

It was a moment made more special by the fact they actually let Medusa stay on stage for Macaw’s reveal, as opposed to awkwardly moving her off to the side as has been done with past winners. All the feels finally ended with Medusa unmasking. Scherzinger was on fire tonight — she was the only panelist to guess both contestants’ identities.

BISHOP BRIGGS: I am really grateful for adrenaline. At the time of filming, I was about five or six months postpartum, and I feel like that sort of delirious energy can sometimes be incredible for vulnerability and being present in the moment.

• And so I really tried to keep all those things afloat.
• Tell me about your finale songs — why did you want to sing those two specifically? Well, I begged and begged for “Welcome to the Black Parade” by My Chemical Romance because that’s a song that I actually have in my own set.
• So it really felt like it represents who I am as an artist and performer, and so I really hope that My Chemical Romance feels proud of me.

And also, in true Masked Singer incredibleness, if that’s even a word, being able to stand on top of a piano with flames behind me I mean, it was such a dream come true. And then with a song like “Elastic Heart” by Sia — I really felt this as I was performing it — it felt like the lyrics were telling my story on the show, about having a thick skin and leaning in with my heart and soul.

And so having the combination of both of those complete my journey, meant the world. Did you set out to win the show from the beginning or were you there just for fun? You know, I’m not competitive with others, but I’m very competitive with myself. And so I was really, really, really, really wanting to win.

And when I had that moment with Nicole ringing the bell, and I really saw my journey flash before my eyes, I felt so defeated and deflated. You learn in those moments how much you really want something. And because I was having time away from my son to be on the show, it made me even more determined and even more hungry, and just the thought of being able to show him the trophy made me so excited.

• Since you were there more than anyone else, did you figure out who any of the other contestants were? Oh my gosh, I poked and prodded and asked questions, and I truly got nowhere.
• I was a pest on set.
• You can ask anyone that works there.
• I was asking them for hints, clues, hair color, shoe size, anything I could.

But they are very professional and they would just laugh at me. The finale was probably the most emotional one yet. Walk me through what it was like up there for you in those moments with Macaw. I’m such a huge fan of, can I say his name ? David. Macaw. I’m such a huge fan.

And throughout the season, throughout every single round, I had no idea if I would make it to the next step. So to be standing on stage with someone that I admired not only as a vocalist, but as a human being, in that moment, we both were sharing our stories and our journeys of identity and having difficulty wanting to continue on in life.

And so to be on stage with him in that moment, I feel like we were kindred spirits. It was really emotional and it felt like something that I will hold on to for the rest of my life for sure. You just released a new song, “Baggage,” and you have more new music and a tour coming up.

What can you tell me about all of that, and what about it are you most excited to share with people? I’m really excited. So my EP, When Everything Went Dark, comes out June 23. And I also just released a new song called “Baggage.” And, you know, in terms of what I’m talking about and going through with that EP, it really was a coping mechanism for the timeframe of losing my sister really unexpectedly.

And so it’s sort of like the past, present, and future. And I hope that when people finish the EP, they feel as though they can continue on and they can keep going and they can live alongside their grief, no matter how heavy it feels. And then with the tour, I can’t wait.

1. I’m going to be bringing my son along with me and my husband.
2. They’re going to be in the band.
3. No, I’m just kidding.
4. But I’m very excited.
5. They’re going to be coming along with me.
6. It’s a tour with MisterWives.
7. My main goal as a performer and every single tour that I go into, I want people to leave the show feeling like they are not alone in their pain, that we are in it together, and we will get through it together.

So I can’t wait for all the things. And I especially can’t wait for the Masked Singer finale to air because I am just sweating profusely every time I get a text from someone that knows me, or someone that knows my mannerisms, and not being able to respond to those texts, has been very difficult. Tell me about your The Body Remembers Encore tour, which was just announced, and what you’re most excited for.

Oh my gosh, I’m so excited. I love the craft of making an album in the studio, which I did with The Body Remembers — it’s a double album — and I love doing all that. But the ultimate purpose of making an album, in my opinion, is to get it out in front of people and to perform it live.

• And it’s been an exciting chapter because I did The Body Remembers tour last summer, I did dates for Out of the Blue ‘s 35th anniversary later in the summer in New York, and then I did my first-ever holiday tour, and there’s been a demand for even more.
• So it’s really exciting.
• I always look forward to communing with people really.

I love people. I love the energy of music. I love that it’s attracted people of all generations. I have fans who were not even born yet who have kind of hopped on board with this album, because it’s got a more modern sound. And, of course, fans who have been with me for over three decades.

I don’t know what generation you are, but I’ve really noticed that, my generation, the children of the ’80s, are kind of having their own resurgence and their own, like wanting to feel all the feels from the past but not wanting to live in the past, wanting to move forward and wanting to be out at shows and be vibrant and vital and happy and joyful.

My shows are very raw and very joyful, and very interactive. I take requests, and you know, I have my dancers and my vocalists, and we do all the bells and whistles choreography and stuff, but then we drop all that and go totally in the moment. So it’s a real mix of a lot of elements.

2. Which I also feel like is really having its moment in pop culture again.
3. I’m doing a show with Joey Fatone in like a week and a half or something at SeaWorld.

I got a call the day before I performed because somebody dropped out. So my whole experience was like, okay, I just want to get through the day. I wasn’t thinking about winning. I mean, we put my character together literally overnight and in that costume room that morning.

• The team was unbelievable.
• And “Fernando” came up as the song for me to sing, literally, I was on a plane heading from New York to Vegas, where I live, the day before.
• And the call came as I was sitting down on the plane, and then it got confirmed when I landed.
• So I came to my house, unpacked, repacked, got driven to L.A., got there at 10 p.m., and was on the set at 8 in the morning.

It was such a crazy experience. But I decided to say yes. It had been presented to me to do the show before, and I thought, “Oh, maybe someday I’ll do it. And I’ll take like three months and really get physically conditioned and vocally stretch and do all the things” because I’ve been told by friends, Donny Osmond, and people who have done it, that it’s hard.

• And then this came up and I’m like, “You know what, who knows when I’m going to be able to do it that way.
• So why don’t I just do it this way?” It came up and I was feeling very rock and roll and in the mood to say yes.
• And I said yes.
• It was so surreal, and so much fun.
• Why have months to prepare when you can fly by the seat of your pants, right? Exactly.

There was a little bird pun in there with flying by the seat of your pants. Yeah, I mean, it’s really true. I just felt like nobody else in nine seasons got to have the experience that I had. Like, it hasn’t ever happened. And so I was like, “Okay, I think the universe is sending me this as my unique moment and my unique experience.” And actually, the call came on the one year anniversary of my mom’s passing.

1. And my mom managed me for 25 years.
2. And I thought, “Oh, my mom is managing me today and sending me a cute, fun little gig.” Because something about it, you can even hear it in my voice now, the whole thing has just put me in a great mood.
3. I think people love this show so much because it’s wholesome.
4. We’ve had such a hard three, four years.

And there’s a lot of cynicism in the world. I’m always diving into like, animal rescue and animal abuse, like you can be so weighed down by the realities of the world. And this is pure escapism, and it’s grown ups in these crazy, giant costumes. It’s so absurdly fantastic and whimsical.

And so I just felt like yes, please, I want this right now even going for just a day. Because I knew in not preparing, there was a chance that I was not going to do more than a day. And when I saw Medusa, I was like, “Oh, she’s been preparing for a long time.” And I loved her for that, whoever she is, I don’t know who she is.

But she was so gracious. And it felt like she was rooting for me as well. So it was a very, very fun girl power camaraderie and energy as well. Oh my gosh, I’ve run the gamut. One of my initial guesses was Janelle Monáe, because something about her elegance and the avant garde nature of her voice. But then here’s what happened when I watched it the other night.

Now I’m completely stumped and I want to just leave it to social media nation to be guessing and I don’t want to guess. But what threw me is, when I heard her singing “Dancing Queen” I had a lot of guesses. And they were a little more in the R&B, even older soul singers were coming to mind. But then when I saw the first episode, she had that like super modern Kate McRae-like enunciation in the verses.

So I was like, huh, okay, now I think I might be wrong on the generation, and I might be wrong on the genre of artist that she is. So whoever it is, is very crafty, because I think she’s purposely throwing us and sending everybody in different directions, only in the course of two performances, so I can’t wait to see how it unfolds and what she does coming up.

• That makes two of us.
• You mentioned Donny Osmond, who of course was a finalist in season 1 as the Peacock, and other past contestants that you know.
• Are you going to call any of them up now that you’ve done the show to compare notes? Oh totally! Donny will probably be my first call.
• I’ve taken the NDA very seriously.

So I’ve not called anybody. But Donny’s my friend here in Vegas down the street, so I’m definitely going to call him because I’m always gushing to him anyway, because he’s such a powerhouse, ageless performer. He admittedly has had surgeries, hips and knees and all kinds of crazy things, so for him to be in the crazy costumes — those costumes are heavy! They’re hot.

Just singing live on TV, I don’t care how long you’ve been doing it, it’s got its own set of nerve-wracking qualities to it always, for me, anyway. And so you pile all the other elements on that. But it was a lot of fun. I’m so glad I got to be part of this family and experience and legacy, and yes, I definitely would love to talk about it,

Again, I’m seeing Joey Fatone next week. I want to hear about his experience. He sounded so great. And like Cheyenne Jackson is a fellow Broadway person, his Sam Smith song was so stunning. Certain performances stand out. Of course LeAnn Rimes had such an incredible whole journey.

And can we just talk about Dick Van Dyke, I just realized I haven’t talked about him yet all day. That blew my mind. I was crying right along with Nicole because I’m a theater baby. And she is too. See, I love that so many legendary people want to do the show because it is such a unique experience. And the fact that he graced that stage with his presence was just awe-inspiring.

THE MASKED SINGER Some bunny didn’t deserve to go. But two eliminations had to occur on Wednesday’s installment of The Masked Singer, so Rabbit’s time had come. We asked the man behind the mask — the great Joey Fatone — to talk about why he did the show and how people guessed his identity very early on.

1. ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY Did it take much to convince you to do this show? JOEY FATONE Not really.
2. I love doing fun things like this.
3. I forget when I got the first call on Dancing with the Stars,
4. I was hesitant on that one.
5. I know my left from my right, I know dancing but I don’t know dancing like ballroom and Latin style.

It took me up to season 4 to go, oh let’s do it. With this one, I was like it’s fun, it’s in costume. At first, I didn’t know 100 percent what I was getting myself into. What actually is the competition about? We’re not trying to win a million dollars. It’s nothing like that.

It’s more of a performance, a celebration of people who don’t get a chance to shine or they do shine and it’s fun to hear them in a different way. That’s something that appealed to me. Did you specifically pick the rabbit? There were two drawings that were sent to me. An alien, which was not the one you saw that was worn by LaToya Jackson.

It was completely different. And there was concept art for the rabbit. They were limited in time because they already had 10 people cast on the show. I was No.11. I was like, the rabbit is pretty cool, it’s crazy. It has a Donny Darko vibe with a straight jacket.

It looked easy to move in, at least. Was it? Well the movement for my legs was somewhat easy. However, the top part was not! I was in some sort of straight jacket where the sleeves were 10 times longer, and I had these hockey goalie gloves on. Then, they literally locked me in the jacket. It legitimately had locks on it and I had a spare key with me in my pocket.

I had a long fur neck that was attached to the rabbit head that had to be stuffed in to my T-shirt and the jacket. Then I was wearing another layer, as well. I had the monitor in my ears. Anytime I moved my arms, I had all those ribbons, all those things, that I was trying not to get caught in.

Then, on top of that, you are sweating and running around and I didn’t have the best vision, I saw up and down and directly in front of me, but I had no peripheral vision. What if you had to go to the bathroom? The good thing was I had jeans so it was definitely a lot easier. Not to get too graphic, but if I had to pee, very easy.

No.2? The whole costume would have to come off, no doubt about it. Would you get overheated? For a couple of rehearsals, I would wear a hood and mask. That was hot in general because you were singing into your face. There was a shield, almost like a welder’s mask that would come down.

• And I tied the hoodie really tight, so you wouldn’t see underneath it.
• I wore this white mask that went around my chin and over my head, and then the shield.
• I literally wanted to yank that damn hood off afterwards.
• People were like, no no no! There were still other people around rehearsing.
• I had to go backstage, sweat my ass off, not breathe, to where they could lift it off or blow fans in the actual vent area.

There were two or three people with fans and water. The hardest part was getting water because my neck was tucked into the fur of the jacket. During the actual show, I had to wait until after the performance and for the backstage interviews. I was in that costume for about 45 minute sometimes, just dying.

I can only imagine what everybody else was feeling. Which one of your songs did you enjoy performing the best? All of them! I had a blast with every single one. They were all different types that I would not normally sing. People always ask, what’s my staple song when I go to karaoke. It’s “Jessie’s Girl.” I like doing “My Girl.” In fact the reason I did “My Girl” at the end was because people figured out it was me.

Whatever. When I pitched certain songs, they said no because people could go online and see me singing those songs. That’s why I did “Livin’ La Vida Loca.” Same thing with “Isn’t She Lovely.” Did anyone correctly guess you? Everybody correctly guessed me from day one.

I just denied, denied, denied! I felt bad, I had to apologize to everybody who I lied to. Would you be willing to convince others to do this show? I’m sure I would. I’ve already had people say, ‘ah man, I would love to do that show.’ It’s interesting. It’s not for the faint for heart. It’s a lot of sweating.

If you are claustrophobic, that’s probably not a costume you want to be in. Who knows what other costumes they’ll do. I do keep yelling at them that I want to be a judge, though. It looks like fun. The two-hour finale of The Masked Singer will air from 8 to 10 p.m.

It resulted in Scottish singer Lulu being revealed as the show’s Piece of Cake, Her unmasking was followed by Cat & Mouse, who were unveiled as Shirlie and Martin Kemp, Rubbish (Stephen Hendry), and Pigeon (Katherine Ryan).
