Who is the new Mitchell in EastEnders?
EastEnders’ Sam Mitchell will seemingly return to the BBC soap very soon, as actress Kim Medcalf is said to be back on the set filming after her recent exit sparked fears with viewers Video Loading Video Unavailable EastEnders: Sam Mitchell returns to the square in April EastEnders is lining up the return of Sam Mitchell later this year, and BBC soap fans are thrilled. Actress Kim Medcalf appears to be back filming with the show after being spotted back on set.
- Sam left for Spain back in April, just months after her long-awaited return to the show,
- Sam had been off screen since 2016, while actress Kim had not played her since 2005.
- Now, after months of her being away just a year after her big comeback, it appears she will be back on screen before the end of the year.
Fans of the show claimed on Twitter that she had been spotted back at the studios again for the first time since her departure earlier in the year. Tweets suggested a fan had possibly met her there, confirming her return to Walford was imminent and should be within weeks.
- The tweets were backed by reports suggesting she was indeed returning, with Kim back filming.
- EastEnders is lining up the return of Sam Mitchell later this year ( Image: BBC/Jack Barnes/Kieron McCarron) According to Metro.co.uk, the actress is understood to be back filming again and could be on screen within six weeks.
Details of the big return remain under wraps, with a return date not confirmed. The Mirror has reached out to the BBC for comment. It was recently feared she would not return, after a comment made by her son Ricky Mitchell about her absence. Sam had promised to be back for the arrival of her granddaughter baby Charli, who 12-year-old Ricky welcomed with Lily Slater, 12, last week.
Lily’s birth was earlier than her due date, and when Ricky reached out to Sam she said she could not be there. Ricky handed Lily a gift from Sam, and appeared to cut ties with his mum not believing she was going to be there for him. Ricky and Sam had an estranged relationship for some time after she left him in Walford a few years back, but recently they got things back on track.
So can Sam win her son back over when she returns, and is this why she is back? Ricky’s frustration at his mum and her delayed return left fans worried she would not be back. Is Peter Beale leaving EastEnders
Why did Peter leave EastEnders and what happened between he, Kathy and Ben? – Peter, played by Dayle Hudson at the time, felt betrayed by Kathy after she covered for Ben (Picture: BBC / Jack Barnes / Kieron McCarron) Peter, played by Dayle Hudson at the time, departed Walford in July last year after a heated showdown with nan Kathy and brother Bobby, disowning his family as he packed up his belongings and headed straight for the Tube station,
- His reasons for departing were due to him having found out that Ben was the one who attacked him outside a nightclub several months earlier, with Kathy not only aware of what her son did, but having provided him with an alibi, meaning that Peter had no-one to corroborate his version of events.
- Ben was seriously struggling at the time, after he was raped by Lewis Butler (Aidan O’Callaghan), and he resorted to attacking homophobes.
Peter, who was wearing similar attire to that of a homophobe from earlier in the day, was brutally attacked by Ben in a case of mistaken identity, Kathy soon uncovered the truth and vowed to keep it a secret. Ben took shocking action on Peter upon realising he’d gone to the police over the attack (Picture: BBC) Peter, however, soon found out what Ben had done and, despite his feelings on the matter, he agreed to keep quiet – that is, until Ben spilled the beans about him having sex with Dana Monroe (Barbara Smith) to a devastated Bobby. Peter stormed out of Walford, feeling utterly unloved and unwanted (Picture: BBC) Kathy therefore took action, providing Ben with a false alibi, which ultimately led to his release. Peter was left crushed by Kathy’s betrayal, with vengeful Ben branding him a ‘grass’, before forcing his own nephew’s head down the sink, holding him under water for a few moments. Peter is determined to make amends upon his return, hopeful to make the chippy a thriving business (Picture: BBC / Jack Barnes / Kieron McCarron) Having had access to the finances as manager at Walford East at the time, Peter cleaned out Kathy’s account, leaving her in quite the pickle, which has led to her having to sell the chippy.
Peter certainly has some making up to do, that’s for sure, and he sets out to do just that, though Ben isn’t showing any signs of forgiveness, as he confronts his nephew over his crimes in upcoming scenes. EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One or stream episodes first daily at 6am on BBC iPlayer.

Sam Mitchell (also Butcher and Hunter ) is a fictional character from the BBC soap opera EastEnders, The third member of the Mitchell family to appear on the soap, Sam was introduced as a 15-year-old schoolgirl in July 1990, originally played by Danniella Westbrook,
- Westbrook quit in 1993, but Sam reappeared from 1995 to 1996 and from 1999 to 2000.
- In both stints, Sam was written out earlier than the producers intended due to off-screen controversies surrounding Westbrook.
- In early 2002, Sam was introduced for a fourth time, but the role was recast to Kim Medcalf, who stayed in the role until late 2005.
Diederick Santer later decided to reintroduce Sam for a brief stint in 2009 and opted to bring Westbrook back. Westbrook briefly reprised the role once again in 2016 for the funeral of Sam’s mother Peggy Mitchell ( Barbara Windsor ). In January 2022, it was announced that Sam would be returning to the show, this time played by Medcalf again.
Sam was initially portrayed as a young, naïve girl who had initially relied less upon her mother Peggy than her older brothers Phil ( Steve McFadden ) and Grant Mitchell ( Ross Kemp ), although she gradually evolved into becoming more flirty, headstrong, and charismatic, with a determination to be taken more seriously.
As a teenager, Sam falls in love and elopes with Ricky Butcher ( Sid Owen ). Later, she feuds with Den’s wife Chrissie Watts ( Tracy-Ann Oberman ) after she incriminates both Sam and Zoe Slater ( Michelle Ryan ) for Den’s murder, which led to Sam leaving the soap in 2005 to escape punishment for perverting the course of justice.
Amongst various feuds with many characters, other storylines have seen her key involvement in Den Watts ‘ ( Leslie Grantham ) murder, as well as struggling to cope with motherhood after giving birth to Ricky Mitchell (Henri Charles/Frankie Day). Sam’s various stints on the soap have received a mixed reception with both Westbrook and Medcalf having received praise and criticism for their portrayals of the role.
Critics have written that across her stints, Sam has felt like various different characters due to differences in writing, storylines and the actress portraying her. However, viewers have preferred Medcalf in the role as they feel that she makes the character multi-layered.

Why is Cindy back in EastEnders?
More like this – Cindy and Ian have now returned to EastEnders permanently after Cindy journeyed to Walford to retrieve her son Peter (Thomas Law) – who was aware he now had half-sisters living in Walford – and experienced confrontations with former mother-in-law Kathy Cotton (Gillian Taylforth) and then George himself.
Are Cindy and Ian back together
EastEnders character Cindy Beale has returned to the soap after 25 years and has rekindled a relationship with former husband Ian Beale. It was revealed during Thursday’s episode that Cindy, played by Michelle Collins, 61, had been put into witness protection, even though Ian was told that she had died in prison in 1998 whilst giving birth. Michelle Collins has reprised her role as Cindy Beale (Jack Barnes/BBC/PA) Peter Beale (Thomas Law) also made a return to the show, joined by his son Louie Beale and Louie’s mother Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa). Law said he had hoped to return to the long-running soap since his departure in 2010, but “never thought it would happen”.
“Over the years, I had hoped for a return to the Square although I never thought it would happen so it’s an absolute delight to be back in Walford as Peter Beale,” he said. “It’s been great to see familiar and new faces, and I can’t wait to explore the character again in the wake of Cindy’s return – it’s an exciting time to return.” In the episode, Ian and Cindy discussed a move back to Walford after they were told that the inmate Cindy had given information about has died, meaning that her witness protection programme has come to an end.
At the end of Wednesday’s episode, it was revealed that Cindy has been going by the name of the mysterious Rose Knight, after audiences were teased with a shot of Cindy sitting on a sun lounger with a glass of wine in hand and an unanswered phone call from George Knight. Cindy Beale relaxing on a sun lounger somewhere in France (Jack Barnes/BBC/PA) George joined the square relatively recently to be with his partner Elaine Peacock (Harriet Thorpe) who is the mother of Linda Carter (Kellie Bright). Since his arrival, George has enlisted the help of Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) to try to find Rose, who he does not realise is also Cindy Beale.

Cindy Beale (also Williams ) is a fictional character from the BBC soap opera EastEnders, played by Michelle Collins, She first appeared 10 May 1988 and originally departed on 27 December 1990, before returning as one of the show’s central antagonists from 13 October 1992 until her exit episode on 10 April 1998; the character supposedly died off-screen during childbirth on 5 November 1998.
During her first stint on the show, Cindy embarked on a prolonged relationship with her would-be husband Ian Beale ( Adam Woodyatt ). Their marriage soon deteriorated, however, due to Cindy’s selfish streak that shows the character becoming unfaithful to Ian and growing more concerned about her own needs than their own children.
She lies and schemes to ensure that she gets what she wants. It was reported on 19 May 2023 that Collins would be making a shock return to the show after 25 years away, thus “resurrecting” the character from the dead. She returned on 21 June 2023 for two episodes where it is revealed that Cindy never died and that under the witness protection programme, she had assumed the identity of Rose Knight, the wife of George Knight ( Colin Salmon ) and the mother of Gina ( Francesca Henry ) and Anna ( Molly Rainford ).

Does Sam Mitchell leave EastEnders?
Second reintroduction and axing (1999–2000) – In November 1998, Westbrook revealed to Hello! magazine that she was “desperate” to return to EastEnders, because she was in need of the money. According to Westbrook, actors Mike Reid and Barbara Windsor who both appeared as Frank and Peggy Butcher were keen to have her back on the cast too.
Her plea came at a time when executive producer Matthew Robinson had already considered bringing Sam back, but because of Westbrook’s past problems, he wanted to recast the role to another actress. However, the BBC’s Controller of Continuing Drama Series, Mal Young, thought they were judging Westbrook unfairly, believing a lot of the stories printed about her in the tabloid press.
On his say so, Westbrook was offered another contract to reprise the role of Sam. In May 1999, Westbrook said, “It’s my dream come true. Sam is a great character and I’m thrilled to be given another chance to play her. The storyline is excellent and I think it’s safe to say there’ll be a few family fireworks once I’m back in town.” Executive producer Matthew Robinson said, “We are delighted to be welcoming back the popular character of Sam Butcher to the Square for storylines that are certain to intrigue our viewers.” The character made her return on-screen on 22 July 1999 and was involved in the storyline relating to actor Ross Kemp’s departure, and romances with her brothers’ enemies Beppe di Marco ( Michael Greco ) and Steve Owen ( Martin Kemp ).
Despite Westbrook’s claims that her close friend Mike Reid had backed her decision to return, he and other EastEnders actors later publicly denounced the BBC’s decision in a documentary about Westbrook, as they had first hand experience of Westbrook’s addiction on set and were concerned for her welfare.
It was reported that Westbrook underwent constant drug tests to keep her job, but at this time, her excessive use of cocaine had completely eroded away her nasal septum. In order to hide this from the audience, she was only filmed in ways that would keep her septum hidden from view.
However, Westbrook’s drug-use continued, and following more press speculation about her private life, the BBC announced in January 2000 that she was being axed from the soap once again. A BBC spokesman said: “Danniella Westbrook’s contract has not been renewed. Her character Sam Mitchell will move to north London, leaving the door open for her to return in the future.” Westbrook added: “I will always love working on EastEnders, especially with the cast.
Sam’s departure to north London gives me the chance to explore more opportunities.” Speaking to London’s radio station Capital 95.8, Westbrook denied she had been sacked, saying she decided to leave because she was getting married and she wanted to spend time with her husband.
- She added, “I’ll maybe go back to EastEnders in six months, so it’s an amicable split.” Westbrook did not return and made her final appearance as Sam on 24 January 2000.
- She has since confessed that her drug taking was the reason why she was written out.
- In her autobiography she comments, “I wasn’t fired this time, but let’s just say when they gave me the opportunity to walk I took it.
I was no longer interested in acting and that had become blatantly obvious to everyone on set. The soap was now being shown four times a week and it was impossible to balance the workload with my addiction Not only had destroyed my nose, but it was about to destroy my career again as well The producers were tiring of my behaviour When I did leave the production at the end of 1999 it was in fact a fairly mutual decision.
