READ MORE THE MASKED SINGER – As it turned out, Charlie Was unmasked as Rhino on Saturday night. Along with James, the Busted and Fightstar singer had been long-rumoured to be hidden under the elaborate costume, with fans previously saying it was “obvious” due to his distinctive gravelly singing voice.
Rhino had a country music theme to their clue teasers on The Masked Singer, dressing up as a cowboy as they navigated their way through a Western setting. Over the course of the show, Rhino performed Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol, Into You by Ariana Grande and Use Somebody by Kings of Leon. In Clue Song week, they sang The Lion King’s I Just Can’t Wait to Be King, which many believed confirmed Charlie’s identity as it was a reference to King Charles (aka Charlie).
In the final episode, they performed Before You Go by Lewis Capaldi, and Labrinth’s Beneath Your Beautiful with Harlequin (aka Gabrielle, who took part in the 2021 series) The clue package gave hints to the number 3000 (like Busted hit Year 3000), and a school tie (from their music video for What I Go To School For).
After votes by the audience, Charlie was sent through to the final round with Phoenix, as Natalie Appleton was unmasked as Fawn. For their final song, they performed Try by Pink, and in the final vote, was finally crowned champion, beating out Ricky Wilson, who was hidden behind Phoenix. When it came to the big reveal, several of the judges had already cracked who was singing.
Davina McCall and Rita Ora both believed it to be Charlie due to his voice and the clues. It was later revealed even host Joel Dommett thought it was Charlie as well. Mo Gilligan believed him to be Jason Orange from Take That, Lee Mack thought George Ezra, and Jonathan Ross thought James. 5 Rhino, Fawn and Phoenix all made it to the finale Credit: ITV 5 Charlie rose to fame in beloved band Busted Credit: Rex

Charlie Simpson reveals meaning behind The Masked Singer costume
- , recent winner of, has revealed that he chose his rhino costume on the show as a nod to his wife’s childhood and family.
- The former frontman won ITV’s secret singing competition on Saturday evening, after he performed three songs including Lewis Capaldi’s “Before You Go”.
- Now, the 37-year-old has explained the sentimental reason why he decided to opt for a rhino costume.
“My wife grew up in Kenya so I spend a lot of time in Kenya, and we spend a lot of time on safari,” said Simpson. “I actually walked with rhinos, and some of the rhinos, there’s only a handful of them left.” He continued: “They’re really endangered and they have to be guarded by military personnel now, so the poachers don’t get them and I actually got to go and walk around with them, with these guards, it was incredible – with some of the last few remaining (rhinos) on Earth.” The singer said that because of this, he wanted the costume to “represent that side of family.
- Simpson has been married to Anna Barnard since 2014.
- The couple share their sons Arlo and Jago together.
- Simpson admitted that his “kids were blown away” by his unmasking on Saturday, which saw him beat Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson, who was disguised as Phoenix, and All Saints star Natalie Appleton as Fawn.
“They kind of knew,” he said explaining their reaction, before detailing how his youngest son, Jago was confused as to when he had taken part in the contest. “He went into himself a bit and was actually a bit quiet and the things that worried him the most were, ‘when did you do this?’, ‘how did I not know about it?’.” Access unlimited streaming of movies and TV shows with Amazon Prime Video Sign up now for a 30-day free trial Access unlimited streaming of movies and TV shows with Amazon Prime Video Sign up now for a 30-day free trial “He started contemplating in his head and I was like ‘Jago don’t worry about it, it’s fine, I did it a while ago’ and it was just so sweet to see him suddenly start to think ‘how did this happen?’. “But they loved it,” Simpson added.
- The former frontman went on to recall a “terrifying” experience that happened during his time in Kenya with his wife: “We camped in the (Masai) Mara once, and there was a lion outside my tent.
- “I’m not joking, you’re meant to have a guard that looks after your tent at night and ours wasn’t there,” he said adding: “And my wife was there, and this f****** lion, that literally sounded like a diesel engine, I would say, (was) 10 feet from our tent.
- “And I said to my wife, ‘I don’t know what we’re supposed to do here because I’m f****** shitting myself.
- The singer explained how he and Barnard had made a plan to set the tent alight and run – but “luckily the lion just pattered away”.
- Simpson’s has even named his new EP after African wildlife; the title of his recent EP, Kifaru, translates to rhino in Swahili.

Is Rhino Russian Spiderman
The Rhino Was Originally a Russian Spider-Man Villain – As mentioned, the Silver Age was rife with evil Russians threatening the Marvel Universe, especially in the case of the rogues’ galleries for both Spider-Man and Iron Man, Crimson Dynamo, Titanium Man, Kraven the Hunter, Chameleon and the Rhino were all bad guys who hailed from beyond the Iron Curtain, illustrating a sort of “Red Scare” sensationalism concerning the country.
The Rhino’s real name was Aleksei Sytsevich, and he was once a member of the Russian mafia. Of course, such anti-Russian sentiment eventually became tiresome, so Marvel just simply stopped drawing from this well instead of rewriting years of continuity. After this, the Rhino would be portrayed as Russian at a surprisingly low degree outside the comics.
The classic 1967 Spider-Man cartoon didn’t really draw on this, with the 1990s cartoon Spider-Man: The Animated Series portraying him as an American with a Brooklyn accent. Said incarnation would inspire takes on the Rhino from then on, and not just in adaptations.

I was so certain that they would see through the mask. Every wrong guess was a bonus.” Fawn revealed as Natalie Appleton (Image: ITV) Natalie Appleton, who was unmasked first on the show’s finale, said: “I love the show. I’ve been watching since season one, including the American version! “I like a challenge. I love to dress up and I do love to sing, so this show was the perfect match for me.

CR: Michael Becker/FOX. ©2023 FOX Media LLC. Macaw on ‘The Masked Singer’ | Credit: Michael Becker/FOX ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: From the beginning of the show, you seemed to have a special connection with panelist Nicole Scherzinger. Tell me about that and what that meant to you. DAVID ARCHULETA: Yeah, I think Nicole, she’s a singer, but not just a singer, she’s a vocalist and an emotional singer as well.
And so I think she always kind of gives a nod to performers who are in that same space. So I did feel a connection with her in that aspect. One of the clues was that we both have a love for the Philippines. She’s part Filipino. I have a lot of ties to the Philippines. I’ve gone there a lot. I’ve done shows.
I’ve also done charity work over there, and have a lot of friends, and did a TV drama series over there, too. Nicole, it’s like she has a way with words. And she would say the exact thing that I needed to hear. I had a moment with Ken as well. Where they say things that kind of just make you feel like you’ve left a print on people.
- You’ve left an impact.
- And I don’t know.
- Whenever she would talk, it made me teary-eyed because you just feel valued.
- It’s like affirming therapy or something.
- They help you see the good qualities in you.
- And I was like, “Oh my gosh, I didn’t think I was gonna have a live therapy session with an audience,” but that’s what it felt like.
It was a very healing experience. On the show, you talked about how you got to a place in your life where you almost walked away from singing and everything. Where are you at now with all that? I had done like two Christmas tours, and I almost did a spring tour last year before I had to get surgery and I couldn’t speak for three months.
So I had to cancel it. But each time that I was going to each place, I was feeling so lost as a person and also just as an artist. I was like, why am I still doing this? I don’t understand. When I came out of the closet, I kind of felt like, who am I supposed to be now? Am I losing who I was? Is who I was even who I am? Was I just trying to appease to everybody the way I thought they wanted me to be? And I did feel a lot of that.
I felt like, okay, there are parts of me that are still there. But who am I? I don’t think I’d given myself a chance because I was always so afraid of myself. And I think it’s hard for me to watch American Idol, for example, because I was young, and I was very much terrified of myself.
And I was just like, well, if I do everything the right way, that part of me won’t come forward. I was trying so hard to, not just hide that part of me, but to just push it down. So that’s why sometimes when I look back, I’m like, oh my gosh, I see that I was exhausted, but I was also trying so hard to not be who I naturally was.
And I got used to that, up until my 20s. I didn’t come come out until I was 30. But in the process, I thought I don’t know who I really am because I’m so used to caging myself, and restricting myself, because I was so afraid of what would happen if I didn’t do that.
So now it’s like okay, here I am. I’m a bird now on The Masked Singer, I’m a bird with its wings spread out, outside of this cage, and free to be vibrant and colorful, but it’s gonna take me some time to learn how to do this. Because I’ve never put myself in a position to be free like this, the flying and being colorful.
But it’s a great starting place for me to move forward and just let my wings loose with my music. And I think it’s going to really reflect in this vision, these new songs, this new liberating feeling. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – FEBRUARY 28: David Archuleta attends The Queerties 2023 Awards celebration at EDEN Sunset on February 28, 2023 in Los Angeles, California. David Archuleta | Credit: Chelsea Guglielmino/Getty Tell me about that — the new music. What can people expect? So the first one I have coming out is “Up,” it comes out June 2, It’s kind of like the prelude. It’s meant to tie where I’m coming from, my past, my history — but it’s also coming from a place where I was at the bottom of that, at the end of that path.
- I’ve lived out the end of this, and I don’t know where else to go.
- This is continuing down a very dark place, and I need to get out of it now.
- So this is me saying, I’m accepting myself as I am, as a queer person, and letting myself be seen, every aspect of myself.
- I don’t even know what I am still, like, I’m still figuring it out — gay, bisexual, I don’t know — that’s why I just say queer.
And I’m just letting all of me be seen now. And not being so afraid of hiding myself and being afraid of what people will say if people find out. I’m just like, you know what, now they know! And now it’s just moving up, and I’m gonna have fun. There’s no need to hide anything anymore — just have a good time.
- There are some really fun songs that are gonna get people dancing as well, that I’m really excited about.
- And there are still some classic ballads.
- I feel like these songs are more about love, something that I always shied away from before because it was something I didn’t relate to.
- I don’t think I ever really experienced love the way everyone talks about in songs and novels and all that.
And I feel like I’m talking about what it’s like for me to experience it for the first time really and fully. I’m excited to share that, in fun ways, dance ways, and also in ballad-y ways. I’m excited to share this new chapter and these new songs with everyone.
The first ones will be out the beginning of summer, and I’m already setting up to release throughout the summer, leading to a full album release later this year. What did your time on The Masked Singer mean to you, and did it surprise you? I was surprised. You just never know what people are going to think of your performance or if they’re going to connect with it.
And I’m just really happy that it seems that from the beginning of my time on the show to the end of it, and being in the finale, I was really just happy that people enjoyed it. That’s what we want as entertainers, we just want people to enjoy watching the show.

Who do people think Rhino is off The Masked Singer
Masked Singer viewers have declared they would be ‘stunned’ if Rhino wasn’t Busted star Charlie Simpson. A week after Chris Kamara was the first celeb to get the boot from the new series, Rhino made his debut in front of that panel, studio audience and millions of viewers at home.
Rhino sang Snow Patrol classic Chasing Cars in a bid to make it through to the next round and he made a fine first impression. Guesses from the panel and viewers at home included Rylan Clark and James Arthur and, while some fans were adamant they’d clocked X Factor winner James in the costume because of his vocals, others were 100% sure they heard Charlie’s distinctive singing voice almost as soon as Rhino started his performance.
