Rupert Murdoch’s TalkTV, GB News Investigated by U.K. Media Regulator as Politicians as Newsreaders Come Under the Scanner U.K. media regulator has launched broadcast standards investigations into, owned by media mogul, and after receiving complaints.

  • The issue of politicians who also serve as newsreaders being in potential breach of Ofcom’s impartiality rules has cropped up in recent months.
  • In April, Ofcom launched an investigation into GB News over an interview given by chancellor of the exchequer Jeremy Hunt to Esther McVey and Philip Davies on March 11 on the “Saturday Morning with Esther and Philip” news program.

All three politicians are members of parliament representing the ruling Conservative party. The investigation is ongoing. On Monday, Ofcom revealed that it is investigating an episode of “State of the Nation” on GB News, which aired on May 9, after receiving 40 complaints.

Presented by Conservative member of parliament Jacob Rees-Mogg, the episode covered a breaking news story about a civil trial verdict involving former U.S. President Donald Trump. “Our investigation will look at the program’s compliance with our rules which prevent politicians from acting as newsreaders in any news programs, unless exceptionally, it is editorially justified,” Ofcom said.

Ofcom has also launched an investigation on the “Richard Tice” program on Talk TV, presented by Alba party leader and former Scottish first minister Alex Salmond on April 2, to see if the show broke Ofcom’s rules requiring news and current affairs to be presented with due impartiality.

  • Ofcom received two complaints about this program, specifically in relation to a discussion on the Scottish National Party.
  • Tice is the leader of the Reform U.K. party.
  • The rules around politicians presenting programs were first introduced in 2005.
  • Given the rise in the number of current affairs programs presented by sitting politicians and recent public interest in this issue, we are conducting new research to gauge current audience attitudes towards these programs.

This will be carried out by an expert research agency and we aim to publish the findings later this year,” Ofcom said. : Rupert Murdoch’s TalkTV, GB News Investigated by U.K. Media Regulator as Politicians as Newsreaders Come Under the Scanner

Is TalkTV doing well?

Rupert Murdoch has insisted he will not shut down TalkTV despite questions over the fledgling news channel’s future as it struggles to revive ailing viewer numbers. Parent company News UK has denied reports the media mogul is drawing up plans to shelve the opinionated news network as soon as the end of the year after it failed to win over audiences.

A News UK spokesman said: “There are no plans nor any discussions about closing TalkTV.” The channel launched last April with the aim of drawing viewers away from mainstream rivals such as the BBC through a slate of lively, opinionated programming. But despite a number of high-profile interviews on Piers Morgan’s show – including Donald Trump and Cristiano Ronaldo – the channel has failed to replicate the success of Mr Murdoch’s outspoken US news network Fox.

Its monthly reach stood at just 1.8m in May, according to the latest figures from ratings agency Barb. That lagged behind 3.4m for rival GB News, and well below 9m for Sky News and 11m for BBC News. The lacklustre viewing figures come despite Mr Murdoch investing heavily in the upstart channel, including splashing out on new TV studios at the group’s headquarters in London Bridge.

Mr Murdoch, who visited News UK’s London headquarters ahead of his lavish summer party last month, has been pumping more money into broadcasting as advertising revenues in his traditional newspaper business come under strain. Bosses have reportedly urged the 92-year-old to rebrand the channel as The Sun TV, with presenter Jeremy Kyle filming test promotional links.

One insider said TalkTV bosses were planning to shake up the schedule later in this year in a further effort to boost viewing figures. TalkTV suffered a £34m loss during its first year on air, according to company accounts filed in April. The station is drawing on a £20m overdraft facility guaranteed by parent company News Corp.

News UK last year brought in Richard Wallace, a former editor of the Daily Mirror, to lead output on TalkTV. But the channel has since been rocked by a number of internal changes, fuelling speculation about dissatisfaction among staff. Tom Newton Dunn, who presents the evening First Edition show, has been on an unexplained leave of absence for the last month.

He was previously moved from the primetime 7pm slot to 10pm amid low ratings. Earlier this week, political editor Kate McCann left TalkTV to join Times Radio, which is also part of Mr Murdoch’s stable of outlets. In a further blow, senior TalkTV executive Erron Gordon was this week poached by GB News.

What’s happened to TalkTV?

No plans to close TalkTV

Rupert Murdoch has insisted there are no plans to shut down TalkTV, despite concerns over poor viewing figures. There had been reports that Murdoch was looking at closing the year-old channel before the end of the year if audiences failed to improve.A News UK spokesperson told the Daily Telegraph: “There are no plans nor any discussions about closing TalkTV.”TalkTV launched last April, combining the output of TalkRadio with shows presented from new TV studios built at the group’s headquarters in London Bridge.High profile presenters included Piers Morgan, whose nightly show is also syndicated the Australia and the United States and has featured guests including Donald Trump and Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, it has failed to attract audiences with its monthly reach standing at 1.8 million in May, compared with 3.4 million for GB News, 9 million for Sky News and 11 million for BBC News. One suggestion from insiders is that the station should rebrand as Sun TV – News UK already operates TimesRadio – with presenter Jeremy Kyle recording promotional links.

How much does Piers Morgan get paid on TalkTV?

Photo by Chris J. Ratcliffe/Bloomberg via Getty Images How much is Nadine Dorries being paid for her weekly show on TalkTV ? The Chatterer is frustrated to report that we still don’t know. The former culture secretary first appeared as a host on the Rupert Murdoch -owned channel last October as a temporary fill-in for Piers Morgan, whose salary is rumoured to be around £15m a year for his TalkTV show and Sun column.

  • Dorries landed her own Friday night show on the channel in February.
  • The first episode, you might recall, featured an interview with her former boss (hero?) Boris Johnson,
  • And yet, as of early June, there have been no entries in the MPs’ register of interests.
  • We still don’t know her TalkTV salary, or even how much she was paid for her week’s work last October.

When the Mirror highlighted this issue last month, Dorries said she had not at that stage been paid and thanked the newspaper for “reminding me to chase”. Select and enter your email address

Which is best GB News or TalkTV

Answered By: Samuel Hernandez Date: created: May 06 2024

GB News ratings versus Talk TV – While GB News has not yet managed to seriously challenge mainstream news channels on TV, it has fared much better against rival opinion offering, Rupert Murdoch’s TalkTV. While Piers Morgan secured a larger average audience for his opening night TalkTV show than Andrew Neil did for his GB News debut last summer, GB News has since then consistently attracted a larger average primetime audience than the News UK contender.

GB News has also on occasion even beaten Sky News in the highly prized 7-11pm slot. Asked if there’s room for both TalkTV and GB News in the UK broadcast landscape, Frangopoulos says: “Talk TV is very different to GB News. “GB News is a purely British product. It’s made for the UK and not compromised by having to make content for other parts of the world.

GB News will run its own race, TalkTV will do its own thing, Sky News will do its thing and so will the BBC. And that’s actually a really healthy thing for the British media landscape.” He adds: ” We welcome the launch of TalkTV. We welcome plurality in the media landscape.

  • The launch of TalkTV is a great compliment for the work done by the team of GB News because up until GB News launched there hadn’t been a new news channel for decades in the UK.
  • Now suddenly, there are a total of four.” Like GB News, Talk TV’s programming is simulcast on a sister radio station (Talkradio) and packaged for Youtube and social media.

After taking to Twitter to rave about his opening night figures, Morgan has since downplayed the importance of these ratings, saying that “linear TV is increasingly irrelevant to the total eyeball potential for a global show like this”. Is that a view that GB News takes on its own audience? As head of digital and presenter Rebecca Hutson told Press Gazette in July last year, GB News maintains that it is really a “digital media business that has a TV channel attached.” “We know that traditional linear consumption has really changed.

  • People don’t sit at home for three hours and watch a show.
  • Instead they want to snack on the best bits for them on the platforms that they’re already using,” said Hutson.
  • That’s why we publish natively across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and we tailor the content specifically for the platform that it’s on so we’re pretty agnostic in terms of how the content looks and feels across the different destinations that we have and the website.” The data suggests that the channel, which claims to have had five billion impressions across web and social since launch, has reason to be bullish about its digital reach.

At the start of February it had 2.9 billion impressions according to its own figures.

How many viewers does TalkTV get?

How do TalkTV ratings compare to GB News on linear TV? – The channel’s first full month of Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board (BARB) data for May showed its reach on linear TV was low. The channel reached 1.9 million people in the UK, compared to 12.3 million for BBC News, 8.9 million for Sky News and 2.2 million for fellow opinion-led broadcaster GB News.

TalkTV also scored worse than GB News on linear TV engagement with viewers tuning in to watch for an average of eight seconds during the month, less than a quarter of the average 35 seconds audiences spent watching GB News. GB News, which launched in June last year, has made inroads against other news providers in the coveted 7pm to 11pm primetime slot, challenging Sky News for viewers.

TalkTV’s evening line-up includes ex-Sun political editor Tom Newton Dunn’s news bulletin up against GB News’ Nigel Farage at 7pm and Piers Morgan against GB News’ Mark Steyn at 8pm. Morgan’s show launched to an average audience of 317,000 on Monday 25 April with the first instalment of his two-part interview with former US president Donald Trump.

However, since then, TalkTV in primetime has been consistently outflanked by GB News. Of the major UK commercial TV news channels, TalkTV’s primetime audience is the smallest with its share regularly below 0.2%, with rivals consistently two or three times higher in June. Several TalkTV shows have also statistically had no viewers at all.

In its first month, almost 200 hours of programming were broadcast to an audience that was too small to be picked up by BARB’s monitoring.
