Why did two actors play Dumbledore
Albus Dumbledore: Richard Harris played Albus Dumbledore for the first two movies. However, when he passed away, the role was given to Michael Gambon for the remaining movies.
Is the actor who played Dumbledore still alive
Richard Harris – J. Vespa/WireImage; Everett Harris originated the role of Albus Dumbledore, Headmaster of Hogwarts, in the first two films, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and The Chamber of Secrets. He died at the age of 72 at the University College of London Hospital after his battle with Hodgkin’s Disease in 2002.
Who plays old and new Dumbledore?
Illness and death – Harris was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease in August 2002, reportedly after being hospitalised with pneumonia, He died at University College Hospital in Bloomsbury, London, on 25 October 2002, aged 72. Harris had quipped that “It was the food!” as he was wheeled out of the Savoy Hotel for the last time.
- He was survived by his three sons, Damian, Jared and Jamie, having spent his final three days in a coma.
- Harris’s body was cremated, and his ashes were scattered in the Bahamas, where he owned a home.
- Harris was a lifelong friend of actor Peter O’Toole, and his family reportedly hoped that O’Toole would replace Harris as Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004).
There were, however, concerns about insuring O’Toole for the six remaining films in the series. Harris was ultimately succeeded as Dumbledore by Michael Gambon, Chris Columbus, director of the first two Harry Potter films, had visited Harris during his last days and had promised not to recast Dumbledore, confident of his eventual recovery.
Why did they replace Dumbledore?
Between Jude Law, Richard Harris, and Michael Gambon, who is the top Dumbledore in the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise? Outside of maybe Gandalf, there isn’t an iconic wizard in fantasy literature who is as beloved as Dumbledore. The Headmaster of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry helped to introduce Harry and his friends to the magical world. Over the course of the seven Harry Potter books, Albus Dumbledore became one of the most complex characters within the series.
- There was a layer of intrigue within his presence, and although readers learned many secrets about Dumbledore’s past, some mysteries remained shrouded in secrecy.
- The novels quickly proved that they couldn’t be contained to the page alone, and a film series was quickly put into production.
- Unquestionably, the biggest challenge would be finding three young actors who could grow and develop over the course of seven years (and ten years of production).
However, nailing Dumbledore was just as important. The films needed a prominent mentor character who could be both tender and powerful. The legendary Irish actor Richard Harris was cast in Christopher Columbus ‘ Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, but he tragically passed away after The Chamber of Secrets wrapped filming.
He was subsequently replaced in the next film by another acclaimed Irish thespian, Michael Gambon, The prequel series decided to show a younger version of Dumbledore, and Jude Law first appeared in the second film, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, However, it appears that Dumbledore’s adventures on screen may have reached a standstill.
Following the underperformance of the third Fantastic Beasts film at the box office, its unclear if Warner Brothers is still intent on continuing the series to reach its intended fourth and fifth chapters. Controversy continues to surround original Harry Potter author J.K.
- Rowling, whose transphobic comments have made many longtime Wizarding World fans contemplate their dedication to series,
- Although Rowling has never offered any condolenscens to the fans thay were offended by her rhetoric, Warner Brothers Discovery CEO David Zazlav seems intent on developing the series further, suggesting he’s open to working with Rowling again.
The complexity surrounding Rowling and a modern reprisal of the franchise specifically relates to the films’ depictions of Dumbledore himself. Dumbledore was confirmed by Rowling to be an LGBTQ character, even if she’s done very little to note that in her work itself.
- Nonetheless, Harry Potter fans (and specifically LGBTQ fans) should not have to associate Rowling’s complex feelings about the character with the lovely performances that brought him to life.
- Each of these great actors showed a different side of the complex mentor, friend, mystery, and icon that is Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore.
Here are all three Dumbledore actors, ranked.
Who played the second Dumbledore?
Michael Gambon played the role of Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films, taking over from Richard Harris, who died after playing the character in two films.

Why did Dumbledore not tell Harry anything?
Dumbledore never told Harry how to destroy Voldemort ‘s horcruxes in the Harry Potter movies, but there are a few reasons for it. This ultimately set the stage for Harry’s difficult journey with Ron and Hermione in Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows,
Throughout the films, Harry had always looked to Dumbledore as a mentor and someone he could trust. His faith in Dumbledore’s strategies solidified his belief that Dumbledore was the greatest wizard who had ever lived. To Harry and nearly every student at Hogwarts, Dumbledore was a firm defender against the dark arts and the biggest threat to Voldemort’s wicked lust for power.
Dumbledore knew that destroying Voldemort’s horcruxes was the only way to truly defeat him. He believed that Harry was the one person who was smart, courageous, and perhaps lucky enough to find and eliminate all the horcruxes. The seven horcruxes each possessed a piece of.

What house was Snape?
What if Snape was never sorted into Slytherin? C ontinuing Continuing our series of stray thoughts, this time, let’s ponder Snape’s life if he had been sorted into the same house as Lily. Albus Dumbledore once said that ‘the consequences of our actions are always so complicated, so diverse, that predicting the future is a very difficult business indeed’, and he was right.
The fickle nature of fate and prophecies comes up time and time again throughout the Harry Potter series. While Harry Potter became the Chosen One, there were so many different roads that the story could have taken; if Voldemort had gone after Neville instead of Harry, for instance, or if Albus hadn’t invited Tom Riddle to Hogwarts.
With all of this in mind, I still reckon that the wizarding world’s fate was sealed the moment the Sorting Hat yelled ‘Slytherin!’ after being placed on an 11-year-old Severus’ head. Here’s how things might have been different if Snape was never sorted into Slytherin.
Firstly, a quick disclaimer for the proud snakes out there. We know that Slytherin is a great house. It is for the smart, the ambitious and the quick-thinking, and it deserves to be respected. However, back in the day when Voldemort was growing in power and gaining followers, Slytherin’s reputation became murky.
Salazar Slytherin’s influence on the house also encouraged certain students to carry the thoughts that ‘pure bloods’ were somehow better than others, from Tom Riddle – all the way up to Malfoy 50 years later. When Snape first met Lily, the pair instantly hit it off and became very close, with Severus sharing everything with her: from what she needed to know about magic, to his own unhappy home life. But when they went to Hogwarts, everything changed. The pair were parted when the Sorting Hat placed Severus in Slytherin and Lily in Gryffindor, and while Lily thrived in her new, magical life, Snape was essentially placed in close quarters with the likes of Lucius Malfoy, Avery and Mulciber.
- Mulciber! If he had been sorted into Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Gryffindor, perhaps Snape stood a chance at making a much safer choice of pals.
- And it has to be said, he was relentlessly bullied by James and Sirius, since the pair had an innate dislike of Slytherin before they even got to know Snape at all, causing him to be angry, bitter, and make up spells like ‘Sectumsempra’ in his spare time.
While Lily thrived at Potions and bickered with James, Severus was getting into some seriously heavy stuff. Surrounded by friends fascinated by the Dark Arts, he became more and more involved in the wrong side of magic and fascinated by Voldemort’s teachings, so much so that he called the one good influence in his life a ‘Mudblood’. Should Snape have never been sorted into Slytherin, he wouldn’t have spent nearly as much time with the wrong sort of people, he wouldn’t have received James and Sirius’ disdain, and his friendship with Lily wouldn’t have abruptly ended. Lily’s good influence on Snape was now lost.
- Maybe Lily and James wouldn’t have got together.
- Think, if Harry had been sorted into Slytherin, he most likely wouldn’t have been friends with Ron and Hermione.
- What then? Well, But the domino effect of Snape’s placement doesn’t change everything.
- If Snape hadn’t been in Slytherin, Voldemort would have still risen to power, yes.
But Snape might well have been on the good side from the start, and wouldn’t have betrayed Trelawney’s prediction to Lord Voldemort. Maybe the first wizarding war would have ended differently. But for Severus, it was just the beginning of his heartbreaking story arc which saw him badly bullied, make a decision which caused him to lose his one true love, then die while redeeming himself and bringing Voldemort down once and for all.
Why is Snape the Half Blood Prince
Family – Snape’s family background is mostly shown in flashbacks during the course of the last three novels. Snape was born to Eileen Prince, a witch, and Tobias Snape, a Muggle, making him a half-blood (hence the name, “Half-Blood Prince”). This is rare for a Death Eater, as remarked in the last book, though Voldemort himself also had a Muggle father.
- Snape spent his early childhood living with his parents in a small house in Spinner’s End,
- Snape’s family was a poor one and he is described as wearing ill-fitting clothes “that were so mis-matched that it looked deliberate”.
- As a child, Snape was apparently neglected and his parents often fought with one another.
Snape was very eager to leave his home to go to Hogwarts. Towards the end of the last novel, Harry draws parallels between his childhood, Snape’s, and Voldemort’s.
How did they make Hagrid so big?The VFX team for Harry Potter used a combination of practical effects and digital techniques to make Hagrid look larger than life. This included creating different-sized sets and using forced perspective techniques. Robbie Coltrane ‘s portrayal of Hagrid captured the character’s idiosyncrasies and sensitive heart, making him the perfect choice for the role.
The use of practical effects in the Harry Potter movies helped to create a realistic and immersive magical world, with iconic exterior shots of Hogwarts and the portrayal of various magical creatures. Other movies, such as Lord of the Rings and Avengers: Infinity War, have also utilized similar effects to make characters appear bigger or smaller.
Harry Potter’s VFX team tried out many exciting techniques to make Hagrid look almost twice as large as a regular-size human, but how did they make Hagrid so big? Rubeus Hagrid is around eight feet tall, considerably smaller than the 12-foot half-giant described in the books,.

Who does Johnny Depp play in Dumbledore
Johnny Depp ‘s Grindelwald character was recast in Fantastic Beasts 3 due to controversies and legal cases surrounding the actor, including allegations of domestic abuse made by his ex-wife Amber Heard, Mads Mikkelsen replaced Depp as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3 and delivered a critically praised performance, with many feeling he outperformed Depp in the role.
While Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore performed slightly better than its predecessor, it still faced middling reviews and struggled at the box office, potentially jeopardizing the future of the franchise. Many are still asking why Johnny Depp was recast as the Gellert Grindelwald actor for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,
The Johnny Depp Grindelwald version was first introduced in a cameo role at the end of 2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, before the actor went on to star in the sequel, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, WB has long had.
