Who plays Ellie in the last of us in the game

Answered By: Dominic Ward Date: created: Sep 10 2023

From PlayStation to HBO – Neil Druckmann has said time and time again that the actors surprised him and changed how the characters were written. Over time, these characters ended up in other media, from a comic book, to a live theatrical performance ! Now, it’s succeeded as a TV adaptation, carried on by different actors.

“I’m hearing Pedro say lines that Troy improvised, and it’s just kind of intermixed in ‘s DNA,” says Druckmann. “I find this really beautiful that it’s like a mixture of Troy, a mixture of Pedro, a mixture of all this stuff that was built at Naughty Dog and rebuilt by this whole new crew, and an amazing cast under the HBO umbrella.” The show also expanded on the original game.

In the final episode, we see Ellie’s mother — now played by Ashley Johnson, the first actor to portray Ellie. Her performance deepens our knowledge of the setting, along with flashbacks across the world amid the zombie outbreak — scenes that are completely original to the adaptation. Ashley Johnson, who played Ellie in the game, played her mother in the final episode of The Last of Us TV show. HBO hide caption toggle caption HBO Ashley Johnson, who played Ellie in the game, played her mother in the final episode of The Last of Us TV show. HBO The Last of Us on HBO wrapped up much like the first video game, leaving us to consider the morally questionable actions taken by the characters who manage to survive in their violent and virulent world.

As Druckmann puts it, “We’re telling a story about love and loss, which is something that every single person that has lived long enough has experienced.” Hollywood finally seems able to do justice to such video games stories. The popularity of Netflix’s Cyberpunk Edgerunners, and Arcane: League of Legends and, alongside The Last of Us, prove that game adaptations have widespread appeal.

Who plays Ellie in The Last of Us 2?

Ellie – Ashley Johnson returned to play protagonist Ellie, Ellie ( Ashley Johnson ) is a playable protagonist of The Last of Us Part II, Two years after the events of the first game, Ellie returned to the Firefly hospital and learned the truth from Joel. The main plot of Part II takes place two years later, where Ellie and Joel have built a life in Jackson, though it is evident their relationship is still strained.

Ellie and her girlfriend Dina leave Jackson in search of Joel and Tommy. Ellie enters the Washington Liberation Front (WLF) camp to witness Abby Anderson beat Joel to death, and swears revenge. Ellie and Dina head to the WLF base in Seattle, where Tommy has gone. After escaping a WLF ambush, the pair retreat to a theater, where Ellie reveals her immunity to Dina and learns that Dina is pregnant.

The next day, with Dina sick, Ellie pursues Tommy alone and encounters Dina’s ex-boyfriend Jesse, who has followed them to Seattle. Evading the Seraphites, a cult fighting the WLF for control of Seattle, Ellie tracks another WLF member, Nora Harris, to a hospital, and tortures her for information.

The next day, Jesse leaves to pursue Tommy, and Ellie heads to Abby’s hideout at an aquarium. After a struggle, Ellie kills Abby’s allies, the pregnant Mel and her boyfriend Owen Moore. Returning to the theater, Ellie, Dina, Jesse and Tommy are ambushed by Abby, who kills Jesse and shoots Tommy. She overpowers Ellie and Dina, but spares them and warns them to leave.

Some time later, Ellie and Dina are living on a farm, taking care of Dina’s baby, but Ellie suffers from posttraumatic stress, When Tommy arrives with information on Abby’s whereabouts, Ellie leaves for Santa Barbara to kill her, despite Dina’s pleas.

  • She is injured in a trap but escapes and rescues Abby and Lev, who have been weakened by weeks of torture.
  • Threatening to kill Lev, Ellie forces Abby to fight her.
  • Ellie overpowers her, losing two fingers in the process, but lets her live.
  • Ellie returns to the farmhouse and finds it empty.
  • She plays Joel’s guitar, recalls her promise to Joel to try to forgive him, and leaves.

For her portrayal as the primary playable character, Johnson took lessons she learned working with Baker on the first game. Johnson considered her own experiences with anxiety, and researched the effects of posttraumatic stress disorder with Druckmann.

Ellie’s excitement for astronomy was based on Johnson’s own interests, while her obsession with comics is based on Druckmann’s childhood. Gross felt that Ellie’s decision to track down Abby was motivated by her desire to overcome her PTSD more than her desire to kill Abby. Gross, who has suffered twice from PTSD, considered it her responsibility to accurately depict the subject matter.

The writers wanted to deconstruct the perception of violence in Joel and Ellie: while Joel is indifferent and practical, Ellie kills to maintain a ” culture of honor ” by attaching violence to her ego. Some of the team considered Ellie’s obsession with Abby akin to a drug addiction, and that Dina left as she felt that the obsession would never end.

Who is Ellie’s face model?

The character artist Soa Lee first made a sculpt wherein she aged up Ellie from the first game (which was already based on Ashley Johnson’s face). She then made a composite sculpt of that aged up Ellie sculpt she did & a 3D scan of Ashley Johnson. First game’s Ellie, despite looking very real, is still stylized.

They needed Ellie to be ‘more’ so that the show isnt just small talk while they roam around picking up boxes of nails and paint cans. The original version of Ellie is portrayed in the backround for most of the experience, just following behind and sometimes having small talk with Joel.

Why is Ellie immune?

So how does Ellie’s immunity actually work? – It’s not until halfway through the finale that we learn how this unusual birth affected Ellie physically. After finally making it to the Fireflies’ hospital base in Salt Lake City that’s been their destination all along, Joel wakes to find Marlene standing over him.

  • Ellie, he’s told, is already being prepped for surgery — and the Firefly doctor believes he knows why she’s immune.
  • Our doctor, he thinks that the cordyceps in Ellie has grown with her since birth,” Marlene explains.
  • It produces a kind of chemical messenger.
  • It makes normal cordyceps think that she’s cordyceps; it’s why she’s immune.

He’s going to remove it from her, multiply the cells in a lab, produce those chemical messengers.and then we can give it to everyone. He thinks it could be a cure, Joel.” So in a similar way to how a vaccine introduces a small quantity of a disease into a person so they can develop the antibodies to fight it, it sounds as though Ellie already has her own, dormant version of cordyceps — and it’s stopping her from catching the form that turns people into killing machines.

The problem? Cordyceps takes over the brain, so Ellie’s involvement in developing a cure requires her sacrifice. Do we know this is exactly how Ellie’s immunity works, for a fact? No, because the surgeon who would have removed Ellie’s brain is permanently stopped in his tracks by Joel. But it certainly sounds viable enough.

The problem is, if the Firefly doctor is right, Ellie’s brain could literally hold the cure for cordyceps. But while she’s still alive, humankind won’t be able to access it. Is Ellie the only immune person?

Are There Any Other Immune Survivors in ‘The Last of Us’? – Image via HBO Joel is immediately angered by the realization of what the Fireflies intend to do to Ellie. He tries to argue with Marlene that she should let Ellie go free, but she isn’t sympathetic to his pleas. In the end, as usual, all that is left for him is violence: in order to save his surrogate daughter, Joel steals a gun from a Firefly soldier and takes out almost everyone in the research facility, Marlene and the surgeon included.

He rescues a still unconscious Ellie and drives her the closest he can get to Wyoming, where his brother Tommy ( Gabriel Luna ) lives in an independent commune. When Ellie wakes up, she asks Joel about what happened at the hospital, and he lies to her, claiming that there are many others like her and that the Fireflies had been running tests on a bunch of immune survivors.

Sadly, however, the hospital was attacked by raiders just after they got there, and it was only a matter of luck that he and Ellie managed to escape. Ellie doesn’t sound too convinced by Joel’s story, and neither should she be. For starters, this whole raider attack thing sounds way too convenient.

Secondly, and perhaps most importantly, if there are indeed dozens of immune survivors, why on Earth was Marlene so intent on getting Ellie in particular to Salt Lake City? The math doesn’t add up, and that’s because, as far as viewers and characters are aware, Ellie is indeed the only person that has managed to live a normal life with Cordyceps in her brain.

So far, there are no other immune survivors in the world of The Last of Us, Joel may have run away with humanity’s only shot at a vaccine. Whether he was right or wrong to do so, well That is up for the viewers to decide.

Why is Ellie different in Last of Us 2?

No Way Does ‘The Last Of Us’ Recast Bella Ramsey For Season 2 The Last of Us HBO In the wake of HBO renewing, I’ve heard some amount of chatter from fans who believe Bella Ramsey will be replaced as Ellie. This appears to be based on the idea that there’s a time jump between games, and Ellie grows up and changes quite a bit, physically, in the process.

The time difference between The Last of Us Part 1 and 2 is five years. So, Ellie starts as a 14 year-old and in the second game she’s 19. Bella Ramsey, though she make not look it, is currently 19, By the time season 2 starts shooting, she will actually be older than Ellie was in the game.

The Last of Us Part 2 Naughty Dog As for the physical difference, might I just saywho cares? Bella Ramsey already looks a lot different than game Ellie at baseline, which has not mattered at all given that she perfectly channels her personality and attitude.

  1. This is Hollywood.
  2. They’ll change her hair and wardrobe and she’ll look at least somewhat older, and it will be fine.
  3. I suppose I understand why people are guessing this may happen, because we just watched HBO’s House of the Dragon recast its younger actresses mid-season with older versions of themselves.

And yet, the difference there is that House of the Dragon takes place, in total, over 20+ years, and the first time jump they did was a full decade. Not to mention I actually didn’t love the fact that they did the recasting in the first place, as it was a bummer to lose those talented younger actresses.

Here, it’s a different situation. The time jump is not as severe, just five years, and Bella Ramsey is already the right age, which I think a lot of people don’t understand. They’ll make her look older than she does now, and it will all be fine. Abby, her rival, is meant to be in her early 20s, and will mark a brand new casting.

Yesterday, I talked about the theory that The Wilds actress Shannon Berry may snag the role, but there’s still been nothing official about that. It’s also been proposed that the game actors who played Yara and Lev should maybe just reprise their roles, given how similar they look to the characters, unlike Ellie and Abby’s voice actresses.

As for Joel well, that’s a conversation for another day. Update (1/31) : In case you wanted any more evidence that Bella Ramsey is not being recast, I suppose we can turn to Bella Ramsey herself, who was positively overjoyed about the season 2 renewal, which is not a reaction you’d have if you were leaving the show.

Nor would they suddenly spring it on her if she was leaving, as that’s something you broadcast well ahead of time during planning, like what they did with House of the Dragon. “I FORGOT ABOUT TWITTER FOR A SECOND but you heard about season two right? I’m taking a ride with my best frienddddd (again) :)” Again, there’s just no need to recast here.

  • None at all.
  • We already know what an exhausting search it was for the show to find Ramsey in the first place, and they are absolutely not going to go through that again to find an actress, what, five years old than her? When she’s already going to be older than Part 2 game Ellie? It’s just not going to happen.

There are way, way too many other roles that will need to be perfectly cast yet again to make season 2, Abby, Owen, Dina, Yara, Lev (though those last two may just be the game actors). Fun fact, Dina’s voice actress, Shannon Woodward, is the one who first introduce Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, so we have her to thank for this entire thing.

Was that Ellie’s real mom

Answered By: Edward Gonzales Date: created: Sep 30 2023

Ellie’s mother is played by the person who birthed the original video game character. Image by Jefferson Chacon Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from Episode 9 of The Last of Us. HBO’s The Last of Us wrapped its story with a dramatic ending where it becomes clear Joel ( Pedro Pascal ) is not a good person. In fact, Joel might not be so different from the many villains he had to face while crossing the US by Ellie’s ( Bella Ramsey ) side.

  • However, while The Last of Us season finale teases a grim future for Joel and Ellie, Episode 9 also goes back in time to explain why the girl is immune to the Cordyceps infection.
  • And in this flashback, we all get to know Ellie’s mother, Anna, who once was a friend of Fireflies leader Marlene ( Merle Dandridge ).

If Anna looks and sounds like someone you might know, that shouldn’t be a surprise. That’s because the actress who plays Ellie’s mom is none else than Ashley Johnson, who provided the voice and motion capture for the girl in The Last of Us games.

Who did Ellie’s tattoo?

Note: This article contains spoilers for “The Last of Us Part II.” First shown in the reveal trailer for “The Last of Us Part II” in late 2016, fans have speculated about Ellie’s tattoo for several years now. Even as you play the sequel, released Friday, its symbolism may not be entirely clear.

Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann, co-director and writer for the game, put those questions to rest in an interview with The Post earlier this month. “There’s a functional reason for the tattoo, which is covering up the bite,” Druckmann said, referring to the wound she suffered from the infected that proved her immunity to the virus on the first game.

“The idea that Joel instilled in her is the bite is dangerous. So, she starts by doing a chemical burn.” Some already guessed that, but this theory is confirmed in the game itself, when Ellie confides in Dina, her love interest, about her self-induced chemical burn underneath the tattoo and how she’s been hiding her immunity.

The tattoo was designed for the game by California-based tattoo artist Natalie Hall, who was invited to Naughty Dog’s Santa Monica studio after the team struggled to hit the right aesthetic internally. They talked her through the themes of the game, and Hall settled on a moth and fern for the design.

” even drew the tattoo on a dev’s arm so that we could see how the image would wrap around the form,” Ashley Swidowski, Naughty Dog’s lead character concept artist, said. The moth intrigued the team because of its resemblance to a firefly, Druckmann explained, a nod to the rebel group of that name within the game.

  1. But the image is also a symbol of death and compulsion.
  2. There’s this idea of obsession and being drawn to a light and constantly pursuing this thing,” Druckmann said.
  3. And that’s how we got the idea as well for the loading screen, which is just moths being drawn to a light, which kind of looked like the spores in the first game.

So, it felt like a sister image.” It represents “this relationship she has with Joel to her old life,” he said. The symbol is not just on her skin, but also engraved on her guitar, a gift from Joel. The moth print on the guitar felt so significant that the team chose it as the opening and closing image of the game.

Why did Ellie lose 2 fingers?

Her quest for revenge against the person who killed Joel, her adoptive father figure. She is emotionally and physically scarred from the confrontation, having lost the top two joints of the pinky and ring fingers on her left hand in the fight.

Why did they need Ellie’s brain?

The Last of Us Finally Reveals Ellie’s True Origin Story to Explain Her Immunity This Last of Us article contains spoilers. In, both the HBO series and the video game that it’s adapted on, the has destroyed the world as we know it. There is no cure for anyone who becomes infected, and they succumb to the mind-controlling fungus within a couple of days.

As far as we know in both the game and the show, Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey in the series) is the only person who has been exposed to Cordyceps and not turned into a flesh-eating monstrosity. While The Last of Us Part I does give some background on Ellie’s immunity, the game doesn’t tell us much about or why Ellie is immune when so many others aren’t.

However, HBO’s The Last of Us expands on this important part of the game’s lore in the season finale, just as the series has done with, Episode 9, “,” begins with a tense opening sequence. A pregnant woman named Anna (played by the original Ellie actor from the games, Ashley Johnson) is running from infected while going into labor.

  • She comes across an abandoned farmhouse, where she fights off the infected alone as the baby is being born.
  • Anna realizes that she has been bit in the leg just as she’s given birth, so she cuts the umbilical cord as soon as she can.
  • Even though she cuts the cord immediately after realizing she’s been infected, it turns out that there are still traces of Cordyceps that pass from Anna to the baby, who she names Ellie.

However, we don’t know that for sure until Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie make it to the Fireflies in Salt Lake City. After Joel and Ellie are attacked, Joel wakes up in a hospital room with Marlene (Merle Dandridge), who explains to him what their doctor’s tests on Ellie’s immunity have uncovered.

Marlene tells Joel that the doctor “thinks that the Cordyceps has grown with Ellie since birth” and that it “produces a kind of chemical messenger” that makes “normal Cordyceps think that she is Cordyceps.” She’s immune because, even when Ellie is bitten or otherwise exposed, the Cordyceps that enters her body already thinks that she’s infected.

In order to create a cure, Marlene says that the doctor is going to remove the Cordyceps from Ellie’s brain, “multiply the cells in a lab,” and reproduce the chemical messengers to give to everyone. In The Last of Us Part I, the player can find a recording from the doctor that gives insight into Ellie’s immunity, just as Marlene’s conversation with Joel does in the show.

  1. However, in this recording, the doctor says that he is “uncertain” why Ellie is immune.
  2. As far as we know in the game, Ellie’s bite at the Boston mall was her first exposure to Cordyceps, and her immunity is presented as more of a miraculous reaction to that than a result of essentially being born with Cordyceps already in her system.

In the game, Ellie also has malignant fungal growth in her brain that has to be removed to be studied, but the recording doesn’t mention chemical messengers or how long the fungus has been in her system. Instead, the doctor just talks about how Ellie’s blood tests and MRI’s don’t match what he typically sees in an infected person.

  1. Because we don’t know exactly why Ellie is immune in the game, it seems more likely that there could still be others out there who are immune, or whose immunity could be revealed later on.
  2. In the show, however, Ellie’s immunity is caused by such unique timing with regards to when her mom was bitten, when she was born, and when the umbilical cord was cut that it truly positions her as the miracle cure for Cordyceps – making even more devastating.

I may not be an expert in statistics or mycology, but even I can predict that the odds of other children being born under the same or similar circumstances with the exact same result aren’t going to be that high, even with all of the infected running around.

Why is Ellie shaking?

Ellie’s Right Hand Shakes – This one detail perfectly exemplifies Naughty Dog’s extreme attention to detail. During gameplay one may notice Ellie’s right hand suffering some slight tremors. This is a common symptom of PTSD, something which Ellie understandably lives with after all the things she has been through. The detail does not really have an effect on gameplay, so one does not have to worry about losing because of it.

  • Ellie grew up as an orphan in the Boston quarantine zone and attended a military preparatory school, where she met and befriended Riley Abel,
  • When Ellie was fourteen, the pair were both infected with the Cordyceps brain infection, where Ellie discovered she was immune.
  • A friend of her mother’s and the leader of the Fireflies, Marlene, believed that she was the key to reverse engineering a vaccine.

Marlene tasked Joel Miller, a smuggler, with escorting Ellie outside of the QZ. The simple drop-off turned into a year-long journey across America, and the two eventually formed a close bond. Upon reaching the Fireflies in Salt Lake City, Joel learned that only killing Ellie could create the cure.

Refusing to allow this, he killed the head surgeon and escaped with Ellie to settle down in Jackson, his brother’s community in Wyoming, For the next four years, Ellie came to resent Joel for saving her life. In 2038, Abby Anderson, a former Firefly and the surgeon’s daughter, found and killed Joel.

Ellie vowed revenge and pursued Abby to Seattle, Her efforts were fruitless, leading her to retire on a farm with her girlfriend Dina and her son JJ, Unable to forgive Abby, Ellie abandoned her family and pursued her once again to Santa Barbara, only to spare Abby in the end.

Was Ellie in love with?

A Star-Crossed First Love – Image via HBO Ellie and Riley exist in contrast to Bill and Frank. They are young, they’re girls, and they both believe (to a certain extent) in the value of society whether that be with FEDRA or the Fireflies. They’re full of ideas and ideologies but too young and too powerless to truly do anything with them.

  • What they do have is each other.
  • Despite not having families and living like military recruits Ellie and Riley had each other and that love eventually bloomed into romantic feelings.
  • We can see it immediately in Ellie’s lingering stares, the way Riley tries to show off for her, how Riley is constantly touching Ellie, and even Ellie’s startled reaction to Riley imagining what she’d look like in lingerie, all set this innocent, tentative romantic tone.

Their hesitation doesn’t come from the same place of fear and paranoia we saw in Bill and Frank. Instead, it’s the fear of change and rejection. That these feelings they have are new and unsure and that both girls are afraid the other doesn’t reciprocate.

We can imagine a future for them that’s so much more but that one night is all they have. A carousel ride, a trip to the arcade, a carefree dance, and a chance kiss between the girls are all the romance they really get to have. And they almost could have been more. They almost could have had more time and figured out what came next together.

All it took was a dance and a kiss to convince Riley to stay and to convince Ellie she’d do anything to keep her there. But before they can even start thinking of their next move, reality comes for them. Their date, their fun, and their indulgence in being carefree kids lured out the infected that would spell their doom.

Ellie was an orphan, and never got to meet either of her parents, and this continues on into the HBO show.

Could Ellie have been a cure

Answered By: Lewis Rivera Date: created: Sep 12 2023

Ellie’s Immunity Isn’t A Cure In The Last Of Us (Nor Is Anything Else) – Joel kills the doctors before they try to synthesize a cure from Ellie’s blood, meaning that nobody knows if a cure was actually possible in the HBO show. However, Ellie’s immunity to the Infected is never used to make a cure in any of The Last of Us games, with this possibility never being resolved.

The Last of Us Part II doesn’t further explore a cure from Ellie, as she chooses to still believe that Joel was telling the truth. Even after Joel admits to lying, Ellie doesn’t return to the hospital, with her immunity not being turned into a cure. Sadly, Ellie’s immunity isn’t the only thing that isn’t a cure.

Throughout The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II, a cure for the Cordyceps brain infection is never found, with no new possibilities popping up in the sequel. While surviving humans have gotten better at dealing with The Last of Us’ Infected zombies, it seems that the monsters will be around forever, as the only doctor who could possibly make a cure was killed by Joel.

Is Ellie from The Last of Us A Boy or a girl

Answered By: Dennis Johnson Date: created: May 25 2023

‘The Last of Us Part II’ handles Ellie’s coming out story with care. It reminded me of my own. This article contains major spoilers for “The Last of Us Part II.” I’d never felt so nervous in my life. Sitting across a table from my father, I told him I was gay.

My heart thumped in my chest and my palms clammed up. I could barely look him in the eye. But he smiled, told me he’d wondered if that was the case, and expressed that he loved me. He had a lot of questions. He didn’t completely understand, but he wanted to try. Ellie and her father figure, Joel, go through similar beats when he accepts her as a gay woman in “The Last of Us Part II.” Coming out is a difficult and occasionally painful process, even in favorable situations.

Though it’s a delicate topic, “The Last of Us Part II” tackles it gracefully in ways few video games have managed, especially in the AAA space. “Ellie has very solidly planted herself and knows who she is, knows what she wants, and what she likes,” co-writer Halley Gross told The Post in an interview last month.

Gross emphasized that cementing Ellie’s sexuality in Part II was a priority, especially after the team framed her as canonically gay in “The Last of Us” DLC “Left Behind.” A harsh, post-apocalyptic world may not sound like the ideal setting for a coming out story, but “The Last of Us Part II” weaves it into the quieter moments.

Ellie’s queerness has significance in the main narrative, as does the story of Lev, a young transgender boy fleeing an ultrareligious community that rejects him. That particular subplot has been received as controversial, with within the trans community.

The exploration of Ellie’s sexual identity, however, deeply resonated with me. Ellie and Joel had just spent a few years in Jackson, a small town in Wyoming cut off from infected (what the series calls zombies). Mostly via flashbacks, we peek into moments of that safe universe, highlighting the ups and downs of a gay teenager navigating romance and coming out.

When Joel asks about a kiss he witnessed between Ellie and her soon-to-be girlfriend Dina, Ellie fidgets and hesitates. They both struggle with eye contact for much of the discussion, but he eventually looks her straight in the eye and says Dina would be lucky to have her.

It’s a moment I deeply appreciated, especially when coming out stories, in many areas of pop culture, are often portrayed as incredibly painful, with queer characters facing disapproval by family members or peers. I’ve experienced disheartening moments when coming out too, but positive depictions of this vulnerable process can be just as empowering and validating (i.e.

this ). And that’s an important tone “The Last of Us Part II” strikes well, in how Ellie is confident in her sexuality and how loved ones respond to her identity. She isn’t entirely removed from bigotry, but Joel comes to her defense when an older man calls her a “loudmouthed d-” when she kisses Dina.

  1. A thoughtful buildup to Ellie’s frank discussion with Joel lends more authenticity to her coming out.
  2. During a flashback, players can read in her journal that she worried about confiding in him.
  3. Should I tell him?” she wrote.
  4. I don’t know.
  5. I don’t know how he’d react.” Ellie writes that she’s envious of her girlfriend at the time, Cat, who is open about their relationship and sexuality in ways Ellie isn’t capable of, at least not yet.

She wants to do the same, but doesn’t know how. I ruminated similar questions before coming out: What would my friends and family think? Would they understand? These questions aren’t easy to voice, and often they aren’t voiced at all. These vulnerable thoughts are appropriately left in the confines of Ellie’s private journal.

  1. By age thirteen, I knew I was attracted to women, but I couldn’t accept it and had trouble understanding myself.
  2. I crushed on female friends secretly, terrified that they would ever find out.
  3. Growing up in a Christian family, I was never taught that being gay was a sin like some experience in a religious upbringing, but the topic or possibility of being attracted to the same sex never came up at all.

This planted the idea in my mind that, despite the feelings I had, maybe what I wanted didn’t exist. Maybe I was making it up. Because no one else spoke of it, it became weird, if not wrong, to think that way. At least that’s what I told myself. When I befriended other queer people in college, I began to embrace myself.

  1. I attached self-esteem, aspirations and fears to my closeted identity.
  2. Eventually, I found confidence in my vulnerabilities and told loved ones how I was feeling.
  3. Having someone listen and understand helped validate my lived experiences, thoughts and desires.
  4. My dad was that person for me.
  5. And that’s what Ellie sought in Joel.

In a flashback midway through the game from a time before Ellie’s coming out, Joel asks whether Ellie and a male friend, Jesse, have feelings for one another. Ellie says no. Joel pushes, thinking he’s right in his assumptions: “I’ve got a pretty keen eye with these sorts of things.” I imagined Ellie’s eyes rolling as she responds, “Not so keen with this one.” I couldn’t help but laugh; the conversation is gentle, not hostile, and it reminded me of my own teenage years in the closet.

  • Joel, a loving parent, tries so hard to reach Ellie’s world, which has become more closed off in her adolescence.
  • She’s increasingly private about her life.
  • Joel tries to bond by reading her favorite comics, or listening when she expresses an eagerness for more responsibility in Jackson’s duties, like going on patrols.

I remember sharing meaningful hobbies with my dad when I was young, such as my taste in music, and how much it meant when he’d listen. Like Joel, he also tried to gather how I felt about boys. Though somewhat uncomfortable on the receiving side as a closeted teenager, it was his kindness and interest that I appreciated.

  • But still, it was frustrating and made me doubtful.
  • If he was misunderstanding me now, would he have trouble comprehending or accepting me when I told him the truth? In the end, I was accepted and loved by my family in the ways I always was.
  • I had heard all the cautionary tales, of families ripped apart or friends turning away, but I was lucky to be met with love.

Coming out is a formative moment, and Joel accepting Ellie plays a significant role in her redemptive arc, which shows just how much this means to her. Part II sees Ellie struggling with Joel’s past decision to protect her life instead of sacrificing her to save humanity.

She wants to reconcile with him after he accepts her, but he is murdered before they can turn a new leaf. Following her dark, soul-searching journey, his acceptance frees her from hatred by the game’s conclusion. Because of Joel, she spares his killer. Ellie doesn’t get a happy ending. She suffers, losing her relationship with Dina and their child, JJ, because of regretful choices she makes, routinely opting for vengeance over love.

Eventually she finds peace, thanks in large part to Joel’s final liberating act of kindness. This demonstrates the power of acceptance: Loving someone, in their entirety, validates and helps a person embrace themselves. After coming out, I could cherish something that was denied to Ellie: A loving father who took the time to understand every facet of me.

Today I seek guidance from him with relationships in ways I was never comfortable as a teenager. Coming out takes courage, and in my case, incited change and paved a better future in which I loved myself. For Ellie, and for me, these moments shape us into who we’re meant to be. : ‘The Last of Us Part II’ handles Ellie’s coming out story with care.

It reminded me of my own.

Who is girl in the video game of last of us

Answered By: Aidan Bryant Date: created: Dec 14 2023

Ellie – Ashley Johnson was excited to portray Ellie as she felt video games rarely feature such strong female characters. Ellie ( Ashley Johnson ) is a fourteen-year-old orphan and the other main playable character in the game, and one of the few characters to have never known life before the infection.

Much of her backstory is revealed in the additional content The Last of Us: Left Behind and the comic book miniseries The Last of Us: American Dreams, After surviving a bite from the Infected, Ellie is tasked to Joel to be escorted to the Fireflies. Initially annoyed by Joel’s surliness, Ellie starts to feel a strong attachment to him.

After experiencing a traumatizing encounter in the Winter, in which Ellie is nearly raped and murdered by a band of cannibals, she becomes withdrawn and introverted. When Joel finally gets her to the Fireflies, it is discovered she has a mutant strain of the Cordyceps fungus growing on her brain, which may be used to create a vaccine; in order to extract the fungi, an operation on Ellie’s brain is required that will likely kill her.

While she is being prepared for surgery, Joel makes his way to the operating room and carries her to safety. When Ellie awakens from unconsciousness, Joel lies by telling her the Fireflies found many other subjects, and had stopped looking for a cure. Ellie later confronts him about it, demanding to know the truth.

When he reassures her he is telling the truth, she replies with “Okay”. The team felt establishing Ellie’s physical appearance was “critical”; they felt she needed to appear young enough to make her relationship with Joel believable, but old enough to be credible as a resourceful teenager capable of surviving.

: 19  When questioned about the inspiration for Ellie as a gameplay feature, Druckmann recalled when he and Straley were brainstorming ideas for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and created a mute character who would summon the player to follow them, creating a “beautiful” relationship through gameplay alone.

Though this concept was never included in the final game, the idea was raised when the team were discussing a new project, ultimately inspiring Ellie. Following the release of Left Behind, in which Ellie is seen kissing her friend Riley, Druckmann confirmed she is gay.

Who talks for Ellie in the last of us game

Answered By: Patrick Richardson Date: created: Aug 03 2023

While it’s not that strange for actors to lend their voices to video games, it’s less common for a video game voice actor to reprise their role for an on-screen adaptation. In 2013, Ashley Johnson voiced Ellie in The Last Of Us, which went on to become a cultural phenomenon.

  1. Of course, when the time came to adapt the hit game into a series a decade later, Johnson was not in the running for playing teenage Ellie on the HBO series, as she was well into her thirties.
  2. But that didn’t mean she wouldn’t be involved at all! Johnson ended up guest starring in the season finale of The Last Of Us this week, portraying Ellie’s mom Anna in a flashback, who is forced to give birth while living in the terrifying Cordyceps – infected wasteland.

While there is talk of Ellie’s mother Anna in the game, this is the first time the fans are given some back story and context. Johnson told The Hollywood Reporter that she was shocked but delighted to be a part of the monumental series (after a quick cry): I got a text from Neil and he said, “Hey, Craig and I were talking and would you like to play Ellie’s mother?” And I just burst into tears.

  1. Of course I would love to.
  2. It’s a shock because when video game adaptations move to film or TV generally, the voice actors or motion capture actors aren’t usually brought along to be part of that project.
  3. So I was just shocked, it’s not the norm.
  4. Being able to still be a part of this story and this world and to also be the first character that fights for this character to live means the world.

While Johnson admitted that it was “strange” to see her familiar characters played by new actors, she applauded Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey’s performances. “I feel like with Bella and Pedro, I feel like they’ve elevated the characters. They’ve brought their own imprint and I’m so glad that they’ve had the space to make it their own and play the characters how they see them.

I’m so blown away by Bella, I think she’s absolutely incredible. I think this would have been hard if it was someone that was not great.” Johnson wasn’t the only original voice actor to join the show– Joel’s original voice actor Tory Baker also stopped by for a cameo this season, though his cameo involved some good old-fashion cannibalism.

We certainly have not seen the last of The Last Of Us, which was renewed for another season earlier this year, so Johnson could very well come back for another flashback or side plot. Maybe one where she isn’t in constant danger would be nice! (Via The Hollywood Reporter)
