I could do with less sexualization of teenagers, but understand the show is being realistic about the lives of teens. Georgia is a great character too as she is complex and interesting. 1. The way she treats her mom, and always sees herself as the victim in everything really bothers me.
2. She thinks every time someone doesn’t agree with her that’s is either racist or they are in the wrong.
3. She’s closed minded while also being open minded and seems to have this idea that everyone else’s life aside from her own is perfect.

She’s self centred and immature but thinks she’s the opposite. Again maybe this is the way she was to be portrayed because this is how a lot of teenagers can act, buy it often made her unlikeable and I often found myself not wanting to root for her. The Virginia character however is absolutely exhausting. I am so sick of watching her grump through every scene. You guys are really comparing that show to a level of Breaking bad/Chernobyl and other ten worthy shows? Most of the time this show is filled out with cringy scenes and doesn’t make any sense (Cynthia just breaking into the office randomly? Georgia not facing any consequences after killing her two husbands and being this master criminal? There is so much stuff that doesn’t make sense that I would spend 3 hours just writing them down here), the flashbacks were the worst I’ve ever seen, the show is taking us 15 years back but the home looks modern? People also said that this show pretty accurately portrays teenage life and problems(?) but it’s not true at all.

I believe that to some sort of audience it’s a pretty good show but a 10?. Permalink 7 /10 Not at all what I was expecting (in a good way). This show surprised me. It’s more than just a teen drama. I appreciate the racially mixed casting and the delving into issues faced by biracial kids. All of the comparisons to Gilmore Girls are purely superficial and take away from the darkness that I felt this show did very well.

I think the casting was really well done. I say kudos to the casting of the “teen” actors. They all looked pretty young (they looked 20 instead of 25-30 like usual in these shows). If you are expecting something as light and fluffy as the GG, you will be disappointed. But if you want something entertaining with very dark tones and some pretty realistic teen characters.

this show has layers. the characters have layers. Whoever designed this show has some untapped talent. As the story progresses you start to justify actions you would never make, and root for people because they deserve a chance and a change at life. This show is POWERFUL. Netflix would be stupid to let this gem fall away.

So, to anyone reading this unsure wether to give it a go, if you enjoy an easy watch with great storylines and romance, I’d definitely say yes.

1. I’d say the target audience is teens/YA but I’m pushing 30yo and LOVED it! The ratings have taken a hit due to a Taylor Swift comment and from someone who loves Taylor’s music it’s ridiculous that no one can mention ANYTHING anymore without it offending someone.

A mother-daugther story that is far beyond their own relationship which is born out of a stereotypical “free spirit” mom on the run storyline. It’s chaotic in a wonderful way. She complains about not feeling black enough but also not feeling white enough. However she is literally invited by the black students to hang out and completely ignores them. All black cast members besides the biracial daughter are treated like props.

• The majority of her friends are all white and that’s pretty much all she deals with.
• The only time she acknowledges that she is part black is when it’s convenient and used as a tool.
• I found this extremely bothersome.
• However I really enjoyed her mother and all the scenes that revolved around her.
• It’s laughable that people think this show is diverse.

No it’s far from it and it’s insulting actually because race is literally used as a tool. Ginny ignores the BLACK KIDS completely. Ginny is self absorbed and acts like a victim. • In the days of streaming with millions of low quality options, I feel it’s rare for a second season to deliver this well.
• Lots of interesting storylines.
• And they are tight.

It’s fast paced despite being 10 episodes long. There are few more storylines I’d love to see fleshed out, but overall it had me interested and excited throughout. It doesn’t trail too far down any political agenda. Instead it handles issues around identity, gun safety and mental health with nuance.

Which I appreciate. I’m pretty liberal, but I’m not interested in PC agendas being shoved down my throat in one direction or another. Real like isn’t that black or white. 1. In fact that makes the comedy the best aspect of the show: a bunch of really weird mid-late 20s clowny tapdancing actors acting like high schoolers.
2. Storywise everyone needs a dramatic confrontation with everyone else.
3. Just draw a diagram you will see.
4. Even the little kid needs a relationship drama.
5. Also, bedroom door locks have not been invented in this show, so everyone just walks into bedroom of everyone else.

Nonsensical plot devices, copious amount of drugs, alcohol, sex inserted into the story sprinkled with some political slogans and voila you have the recipe for ‘coming of age’ story. Not very interesting or creative. The writer ended up creating a bunch of cartoonish bipolar characters as the intellectually inferior friends to the ‘iamverysmart’ protagonist (apparently taking AP English and citing some movement in the 80s are very impressive feats).

• And the mom is also verysmart, strong, independent and dangerous.
• Imagine a generation of kids like Ginny: inflated sense of self importance, big ego and often overestimate their intelligence.

Permalink 9 /10 Good grief! All the Ginny haters need to read some Gabor Maté! All the people complaining about Ginny need to go read some Gabor Maté material, and learn to love their past teenage selves, in order to stop being triggered by a completely natural teenage response to how messed up her mom is.

Like I love Georgia as a character, and I can understand her motives for everything (survival) but at some point, like any trauma coping mechanism it becomes maladaptive. She has zero boundaries with Ginny, she is extremely emotionally immature in many aspects of her life, she never allows Ginny to have feelings about anything or confide in her, or else she (Georgia) goes and tries to “fix” things for her which places so much burden on Ginny.

So Ginny has to shove everything down, seems to have some form of alexithymia, so when she feels overwhelmed with feelings she can’t identify, nor share with her mom (or anyone for that matter), of course self harm is going to happen. I’m seriously flabbergasted at the lot of you that think Ginny is so awful and ungrateful.

Do you not understand that as a viewer you are seeing the full story, but Ginny doesn’t get to? And how absolutely frustrating that must be? Do you realize that Georgia is supposed to be the adult with the fully developed brain, and we should never expect teenagers to behave in ways that require full brain development? I mean the therapy session alone should be a very clear indication that Georgia has lots of work to do in regards to her own past traumas, and her refusal to do so or to allow any space for feelings of discomfort is spilling over into Ginny’s life and causing an entirely new set of traumas.

Aside from that, I found this show to be binge worthy. Yep it’s got controversial topics and some very gray areas for sure. But that’s what stories are for, to allow us to work out situations in our brains without actually having to live them out if we don’t want to. If you want to watch a show that is more black and white then this is not the show for you.

The time for working out things you’re not sure of, and for experimenting, is when you’re a teenager and you have (hopefully) a soft place to land – a loving supportive family. One that understands teenagers are supposed to make mistakes and be difficult.

If that idea makes you uncomfortable, please read the first sentence of my review again, and don’t watch this show til you do the thing. Also what a cliffhanger at the end of season 2! It will be interesting to see where they take it in season 3! Was it a double cross, and if so who was/were the mastermind(s)? I hope it doesn’t go with the cliche, and instead we see some sort of alliance between Georgia and Cynthia.

Georgia has had to fight tooth and nail in life just to dig herself out of a horrible upbringing. She did what she had to do, and I hope most people can understand that suggestions like “just call the cops” are almost never realistically beneficial or helpful in any way.

I truly hope there is some redemption and room for her to heal and grow in season 3. And I really hope that Ginny and Austin will get to benefit from that. Maybe there’s room to create drama with other characters like Nora, and to delve further into what so far has been surface level exploration of Abby’s, Marcus’, and Hunter’s lives.

2. Permalink 8 /10 Surprisingly Great I just finished Firefly Lane on Netflix and absolutely loved it.
3. I binged the series in a few days and Netflix kept recommending Ginny & Georgia.
4. I kept opting out because I was expecting a cheesy comedy with some life lessons thrown in.

Something like a modern and diverse “Full House”or “Boy Meets World”. I finally gave in and figured I’d give it a chance. I was pleasantly surprised by this show and binged it in a few days (sensing a trend here). It has a lot going on. It can’t decide if it wants to be Gilmore girls, Euphoria, Desperate Housewives or Firefly lane.

Despite so many plot lines, I absolutely loved this show. Kudos to Netflix because this is another solid show that I am saddened to have to wait for a season two. The cast is great (Ginny does get annoying after awhile, but she is a teen and that can be expected). The mother and daughter duo works brilliantly and both actresses knock it out of the park.

The entire cast does. Georgia is brilliantly written; she has done some horrible things in life but I find myself rooting for her happiness. It doesn’t matter what your religion is, this show is absolutely not ok. there is so much sex, sex talk, and references. I only watched the first few episodes expecting it to get better but to my surprise it didn’t.

I won’t go into detail but there is a lot and it’s all looked at as totally normal. I cannot fathom how multiple people could watch this and think it’s ok for 14 year olds. The sexual stuff is by far the worst I’ve seen in anything with that rating, but also there’s so much drinking and it makes teenagers look horrible.

Not to mention the mother in this show, don’t get me started, she makes her child go on birth control, urges her son to sing songs about sex, teaches him to punch kids if the bully him, and is Totally ok with Ginny drinking and doing drugs, all while stealing, seducing men to get what she wants, and lying to everyone about everything.
