Guy Williams was the visual effects supervisor and Sidney Kombo-Kintombo was the animation director at Wētā FX. We sat down with them in New Zealand to discuss the complexities of animation, re-targeting, and producing complex and subtle acting performances that matched Tatiana Maslany’s original performances.

The two leads both independently praised the dedication and commitment of the show’s lead actress. The entire team worked to not only technically deliver but to also keep the emotional response they saw in the original footage of Maslany.

According to eXputer, trusted Marvel’s Avenger leaker Miller Ross claimed the studio scrapped plans to add She-Hulk to its roster of playable characters. Ross explained that development for the attorney-turned-superhero was plagued with problems, with accidental leaks and internal restructuring repeatedly delaying She-Hulk’s release.

The absence of She-Hulk specifically has long haunted Marvel’s Avengers, with multiple accidental confirmations this past year of not only her presence in the pipeline but also the identity of her voice actress Krizia Bajos,” Ross wrote. “Sources tell me that She-Hulk was in active development in late 2021 by mostly external partners and was shelved when Avengers shifted entirely in-house under, a byproduct of the existing long-term strategy being overhauled.” Ross further reported that Crystal Dynamics originally planned to wait for a better opportunity before it restarted production on She-Hulk.

He continued, “The intention was to resume work on the character at a time when the team had sized up and could support development at a scale large enough to create wholly original gameplay, after a period of smaller content drops and onboarding improvement to demonstrate the title’s worthiness of further capital injections.

Yet, when she creates a profile as She-Hulk, the right swipes start pouring in. Sure, a lot of this sequence is played for laughs, like the montage of vacuous men and equally empty conversations.

Even She-Hulk’s liaison is part of the gag, leaving her suitor in the midst of hooking up to go fight interdimensional bats with Wong. The end, however, isn’t funny at all. When Jen shows up as her natural self, she’s not only rejected but made to feel deceitful for changing at all. One big advantage the binge-release model has over week-to-week is that if a show does break into the zeitgeist, the whole story is told before the audience can react. A show that delays that narrative gratification to a single bite every seven days risks the impatience of the audience.

Perhaps in the final act of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Jen will turn into something that looks more like the Hulk, especially if she faces down some equally yoked opponent. Hulk science is just magic with glass monitors, anyway. What would make something like that dramatically or emotionally interesting is part of the statement the storytellers are making.

Even if that’s not what happens, it’s a safe bet that the statement this series makes about feminine beauty standards won’t be: “They’re great! Nailed it, society.” While the sci-fi explanation is still up-in-the-air, the question of She-Hulk’s hair growth feels settled.

But there remains one notable omission in this incredible reunion. The Hulk himself, Edward Norton as Bruce Banner. For the movie’s first viewers, Norton’s nervous, neurotic Banner was a highlight of the otherwise critically-panned movie. And yet, when the Hulk next appeared in the MCU for 2012’s The Avengers, the Jade Giant sprung from Mark Ruffalo as Banner, and has ever since.

1. Why did Marvel decide to recast Banner for The Avengers ? And why, in this era of multiverses and alternate realities, have we never seen Norton Hulk out again? When Norton came to The Incredible Hulk, he brought with him a number of accolades as an actor, including two Academy Award nominations.
2. More importantly, Norton reminded producers Kevin Feige and Gale Ann Hurd of Bill Bixby, who portrayed Banner for years on the tv series The Incredible Hulk,

After the mixed reception to Ang Lee’s idiosyncratic movie Hulk, Hurd and Feige hoped to ground the new movie, playing up the fugitive nature of Banner’s lonely journey. Norton also brought with him a desire to work behind the camera, having written and rewritten his scripts in the past.

• Allegedly unhappy with the original screenplay by Zak Penn, director Louis Leterrier welcomed Norton’s contributions.
• But Penn took exception with Norton’s revisions, especially when the actor started claiming that he wrote the overall script.
• Eventually, the Writer’s Guild of America had to intercede, awarding sole credit to Penn.

But the real problems began when Norton clashed with Kevin Feige. As any reader of this site knows, Feige is the chief creative of the MCU and truly directs every film and tv show in the franchise. This level of control has made the MCU an unprecedented success but has also resulted in clashes with creatives.

Most famously, Edgar Wright left Ant-Man when his vision clashed with Feige’s and Joss Whedon bristled against the Infinity Stone sequence shoved into Avengers: Age of Ultron, So one can imagine that Feige likely also bristled at Norton’s stripping away shared universe elements from The Incredible Hulk, including references to SHIELD and perpetual sidekick Rick Jones.

And we know that Norton hated Feige’s edit of the film, which removed much of the character development that Norton added, allowing for a leaner and more action-heavy cut. In a 2008 interview with Collider, Leterrier recalls Norton shouting with producers about the cut of the movie, and eventually walking out.

1. When the movie finally hit theaters, Norton refused to do press, spending time abroad instead.
2. At the time, Leterrier told Collider that Norton’s behavior was nothing unusual and that the press made too much about the incident.
3. He echoed those sentiments when talking to EW, saying that the difficulties during filming were “as much Marvel’s fault as Edward’s.” In 2012, Norton told The Hollywood Reporter that he “really, really enjoyed” making the movie and that he decided not to continue playing the character because he didn’t want to commit to another Hulk movie.

“I looked at the balance of time in life that one spends not only making those sorts of films but then especially putting them out, and the obligations that rightly come with that,” he said. Although Norton and Ruffalo play the same version of the Hulk, with Eric Bana’s take in 2003’s Hulk placed in its own continuity, Marvel hasn’t addressed the change.

• Speaking about the Hulk’s battle with Abomination in The Incredible Hulk, Ruffalo’s Hulk says, “That fight was so many years ago, I’m a completely different person now — literally” while his cousin Jen looks directly at the camera.

She-Hulk director Kat Coiro told The Direct that they did “entertain the idea of swapping Mark out for Edward Norton,” ultimately acknowledging that it “did not come to pass.” Does that mean Norton will never play Banner again? In this age of multiverse cameos and Nicolas Cage playing Superman not once, but twice, it’s hard to believe that Norton won’t get the opportunity.

Throughout the movie, Banner tries desperately to bring Hulk out, but the green guy refuses. But it’s not because the transformation mechanism, “If the Hulk were to say why,” Joe Russo explained, “it’s that Banner only wants Hulk for fighting. He’s had enough of saving Banner’s ass.” Thor and Hulk share a moment in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’.

“People have interpreted as the Hulk’s scared,” Joe Russo mused, referring to how Thanos soundly defeated him in one-on-one combat in the film’s opening. “But it’s really reflective of his journey from Ragnarok, that these two characters are constantly in conflict with each other over control.” It has more to do with the internal conflict between Banner and Hulk than any bruised egos.

Banner expressed concern in Ragnarok that if he became the Hulk again, he might never revert, but that still in Infinity War anyway. Remember that also in Ragnarok, both Banner and Hulk accused Thor of only caring about their transformed counterpart.

Hulk might lack Banner’s intelligence, but he’s smart enough to know that the other Avengers only use him for his brute strength. And similarly, when a fight happens, everyone pressures Banner to bring Hulk out. Does anybody really care about either of them? On Sakaar, Hulk was basically worshipped as a celebrity which is why he didn’t really want to leave.

It wasn’t until Thor convinced him they were friends that he agreed to help, but these days, Hulk is over being used and abused. “We thought it’d be more interesting to explore Banner as a hero rather than someone that whines to get help from his alter-ego who he dislikes,” Joe Russo added.

• The Hulk is not interested in helping anymore.
• These two have reached an impasse with each other.” This epic shot from ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ never really happened.
• The Russos also confirmed that Hulk’s appearance as part of the epic in the Infinity War trailers was always intended to be a fake-out.

Similarly, there were that showed Banner transforming while inside the Hulkbuster armor. The Hulk probably isn’t gone forever, but for the time being, he has no interest in helping Banner or his friends with any of this nonsense. We’ll find out when the untitled Avengers 4 movie hits theaters on May 4, 2019.

Complicated Film Rights with Universal Pictures – Universal Pictures The film rights around The Hulk are complicated, as Universal Pictures held the rights for years and released director Ang Lee’s Hulk in 2003. Universal Studios would have lost the rights to the character if a new deal wasn’t renegotiated.

The deal was that Marvel Studios would finance The Incredible Hulk in exchange for Universal Pictures distributing the film. Since Marvel was financing the film this allowed them to use the Hulk in other projects like the planned film The Avengers, Universal retains the right of first refusal to distribute any future solo Hulk movies.

While this might not have been an issue at first since Marvel Studios was an independent studio, in 2009 they became acquired by Walt Disney Pictures. Unlike Spider-Man, which has a shared profit between Sony Pictures and Disney, Universal Pictures would retain most of the profits from distributing The Incredible Hulk,

Clearly, the makers wanted Thanos’ screen version to be intimidating when compared to other celestial beings in the Marvel universe.
