How is Jon Snow related to Rhaenyra Targaryen

Answered By: Gregory Coleman Date: created: Sep 20 2023

The Game of Thrones universe is officially back, and it brought even more confusing family lineage along with it. The new prequel series House of the Dragon rewinds the clock nearly two centuries back to when the Targaryens were thriving as the dragon-riding rulers of Westeros.

  1. Although the spinoff is 172 years removed from the events of Game of Thrones, it’s still connected to the characters in the original show in a compelling way — by blood.
  2. Our new protagonist, Rhaenyra Targaryen, is an ancestor of both Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow.
  3. To fully understand how the characters in House of the Dragon are related to the Mother of Dragons and the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, you first need to remember how Dany and Jon are related.

In Game of Thrones Season 7, Jon discovered his real name was Aegon Targaryen, He learned he was the son of Daenerys’ eldest brother, Rhaegar, and heir to the Iron Throne. That made Dany his aunt and him ahead of her in the line of succession. (Obviously, fans would assume a reveal like that would complicate their romance, but in Westeros, incest is far less of a problem than who inherits what.) Had Jon become king, he would have been Aegon VI Targaryen, sixth of his name.

Rhaenyra Targaryen is at the center of House of the Dragon, the firstborn of her father, King Viserys, I Targaryen, and his only child by his first wife, Aemma Arryn. With no sons when Aemma died in childbirth, and no plans to remarry, Viserys insisted on naming Rhaenyra his heir. (Viserys’ refusal to remarry didn’t last long, which is where the trouble starts.) Rhaenyra will remind viewers a lot of her equally ambitious descendant, Daenerys.

Rhaenyra is Daenerys’ great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandmother (yes, that’s seven “greats”). That means she’s Jon Snow’s (aka Aegon Targaryen’s) eight-times great-grandmother since he’s one generation after Aunt Dany, despite the two being the same age.

Spoiler alert: Explaining the Targaryen family tree may give away some future plot points in House of the Dragon, so if you want to stay totally in the dark, don’t read on. Rhaenyra isn’t the only notable House of the Dragon character Dany and Jon are related to due to the habit of incestuously intermarrying.

They’re directly related to Viserys (who is Daenerys’ eight-times and Jon’s nine-times great grandfather), however, the two characters are also direct descendants of Rhaenyra’s uncle, Daemon Targaryen. As House of the Dragon’s first season has revealed, the attraction between Rhaenryna and Daemon has flared repeatedly throughout their relationship.

  • Even though it’s unclear if Daemon is begging for Rhaenyra’s hand because he wants the throne or lusts for her, their hook-up won’t be the last.
  • When Viserys passes and the conflict between her and the Hightowers escalates, she will find herself conveniently widowed, and Daemon will make sure he is in the same boat.

The two will strike up a romance which produces two sons: Aegon and Viserys. After the Dance of Dragons ends, there’s rapid shuffling through several kings over a short period, ending with Viserys II on the throne at the age of 49. He doesn’t last a year, but his son, Aegon VI, will follow him.

  1. Dany and Jon both descend directly from that line, several generations down.
  2. It’s important to remember that the Game of Thrones TV series made several changes from the books, so House of the Dragon may also rewrite the book saga’s history a bit.
  3. Still, the show has laid the groundwork for Rhaenyra and Daemon’s relationship, eventually leading to the births of both Daenerys and Jon Snow.

Plus, it’s impossible not to see Daenerys’ same fiery spirit in Rhaenyra. You know what they say: Like seven-times-great-grandmother, like seven-times-great-granddaughter. New episodes of House of the Dragon Season 1 arrive Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max.

Why do Targaryens go mad?

Aerys II Targaryen at the height of his madness. ” Half the Targaryens went mad, didn’t they?. What’s the saying? ‘Every time a Targaryen is born the gods flip a coin.’ ” ― Cersei Lannister House Targaryen carries the trait for insanity in its bloodline.

  • Over three hundred years of heavy inbreeding, marrying brother to sister whenever possible to “keep the bloodline pure,” resulted in many of the medical problems seen with incest, particularly mental instability.
  • The most prominent example of the Targaryen madness was the last Targaryen king, Aerys II, who subsequently became known as “the Mad King”.

In his youth, Aerys was initially perceived as charming and ambitious, but as he grew older, Aerys suffered from some sort of paranoid schizophrenia, He heard voices in his head that weren’t real and these voices told him to burn people alive because they were all plotting against him. Aerion Brightflame sealed his fate by drinking wildfire, believing it would turn him into a dragon. The effects worsened with each generation of compounded inbreeding. By the later centuries of their rule, it was joked that when a new Targaryen was born the gods would flip a coin to decide if they would be a brilliant statesman or insane.

This saying is somewhat apt, with Daenerys Targaryen ‘s oldest brother Rhaegar having been considered a great man by all who knew him, and Maester Aemon having become a wise and revered advisor to the Night’s Watch for many decades, both clearly demonstrating that not all Targaryens were doomed to madness.

Generally, if a Targaryen had multiple sons and one of them was clearly mentally unstable, they would try to skip over him in the line of succession in favor of a more stable younger son. Therefore, fewer of the early Targaryen kings had mental problems, because if a king did have a mentally unstable son he wouldn’t be allowed to succeed his father.

However, during the last century of their rule the Targaryen madness became increasingly common, making it more and more difficult to avoid having a mentally unstable son inherit the throne. Although not a Targaryen himself, Joffrey Baratheon ‘s incestuous bloodline is speculated to have produced similarly severe defects in his sanity.

Joffrey is the child of twin lovers, Jaime and Cersei Lannister, and did not have a drop of Baratheon blood in his veins. While he didn’t suffer from hallucinations, Joffrey was a sadistic, megalomaniacal sociopath, with delusions of grandeur. However, his brother and sister – also the children of Jaime and Cersei – did not appear to suffer the same defects.

Did Rhaenyra become queen?

The Dance of Dragons – After Viserys’ passing, Ser Criston Cole, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, crowned Viserys’s eldest male son Aegon II, Rhaenyra, furious, proclaimed herself the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. This proclamation sparked the entire realm to go to war.

  1. Some supported Rhaenyra and others Aegon II.
  2. Dragons covered the entire sky.
  3. Because the dragon riders fought each other, the civil war became known as the Dance of Dragons,
  4. Her faction, known as the Blacks, had their headquarters at Dragonstone, where many semi-wild dragons roamed, she also counted with the support of Houses Velaryon, Stark, Arryn, Mooton, Staunton, Beesbury, Dustin, Manderly, Blackwood, Frey, Tarly, Rowan, Costayne, Sunderland, Borrell and Caswell.

After the death of her second son Lucerys, her husband Daemon sent two assassins to go after King Aegon’s II children, after the death of the Kings son, King Aegon II declared war against Rhaenyra and Daemon. Her eldest son Jacerys proposed to look for more dragon riders to gain an edge in the war, with four succeeding: Addam Velaryon, Hugh the Hammer, Ulf the White, and Nettles.

  • When Jacerys was killed in battle, she tried to send her two youngest sons Aegon and Viserys to Essos for safety, only for Viserys to be captured by the enemy fleet and Aegon returning traumatized to Dragonstone.
  • Thanks to Daemon and the allegiance of King’s Landing City Watch, the Blacks took over the city while most of the Green’s armies and dragon riders were away, imprisoning Heleana and Queen dowager Allicent.

Ser Otto Hightower and Lord Jasper Wylde were executed instead and Aegon disappeared. When it seemed the war was turning in favor of the Blacks, the sudden betrayal of Hammer and White made her believe all bastards were traitors and ordered the imprisonment of Addam Velaryon and the execution of Nettles.

  • This irrational order made Lord Corlys Velaryon, Rhaenyra’s former father in-law, to release his heir and letting himself be imprisoned, while Lord Manfryd Mooton let Nettles go from Maidenpool and then turned to the Greens.
  • The important victory at the Tumbleton didn’t reached Rhaenyra’s ears in time, and during the Storming of the Dragonpit, her third son Joffrey died trying to climb his mother’s dragon,

The loss of all their current dragons made Rhaenyra flee the capital, taking her (believed to be) last remaining child to Dragonstone, not realizing Aegon ‘s forces had already taken over the castle. She was brought to her brother Aegon II, who branded her a traitor of the realm.

Who ruled before the Mad King?

Behind the scenes – For the TV series, the Targaryen lineage was simplified. In the books, there were seventeen Targaryen kings that ruled the Seven Kingdoms, rather than the show having sixteen. After the death of Aegon V, his son Jaehaerys inherited the throne as Jaehaerys II and ruled for three years before dying of grief.

After Jaehaerys’s death, his son the Mad King took over as the last Targaryen king. This would make Aegon V the grandfather of the Mad King, the great-grandfather of Rhaegar, Viserys, and Daenerys Targaryen, and great-great-grandfather of Jon Snow. So far, it has not been confirmed in the series if Aegon V’s daughter Rhaelle did marry into House Baratheon, giving the Baratheons their claim to the throne in the TV series as well as in the books, or if the entire progeny of Aegon V has been replaced with just Aerys and Rhaella.

The HBO Viewer’s Guide confirms the existence of Duncan Targaryen in the TV show (making him Aerys and Rhaella’s brother instead of their uncle), though in the Histories & Lore short ” House Baratheon “, Robert states that his claim to the throne was based on his descent from Orys Baratheon, said to be a half-brother of Aegon I Targaryen,

  1. Another issue that could arise due to the removal of Jaehaerys II is the Mad King’s insanity,
  2. In the books, Aegon V married Betha of House Blackwood,
  3. If this turns out to be the case in the TV series, it would be a stretch to say that Aerys succumbed to insanity due to multiple generations of incest as he would then be descended from three Targaryens who married outside the family (though Aegon V’s brother, Aerion Brightflame suffered from the madness despite being the issue of a marriage between a Targaryen and a Dayne as did their uncle Rhaegel despite being the issue of a marriage between a Targaryen and a Martell ).

There remains a possibility that Aegon did have a sister he married in the TV continuity.

Was Daenerys born after the Mad King died?

And Daenerys wasn’t even born until after the Mad King’s death. There is one Game of Thrones character who may have heard about Aegon’s vision: Maester Aemon Targaryen (Peter Vaughan). Aemon was the son of a king and despite becoming a maester could have had a claim to the Iron Throne when his older brothers died.

Did Daenerys turn into the Mad King?

Daenerys Targaryen transformed into the Mad Queen in the penultimate episode of Game of Thrones, and the Daenerys Kings Landing attaack remains of the most shocking moments on the show. Essentially, the reason Daenerys burned King’s Landing to the ground is that she had already lost everyone and everything dearest to her.

  1. In “The Bells”, the Dragon Queen single-handedly won the Battle of King’s Landing; riding Drogon, they annihilated Euron Greyjoy’s Iron Fleet, wiped out the Golden Company, and eliminated the city’s anti-dragon defenses.
  2. But after the bells rang signaling Cersei Lannister’s surrender, Daenerys snapped and massacred the city with dragonfire.

The divisive Game of Thrones finale culminated in this fiery scene, the completion of Daenerys’ transformation into the Mad Queen. Channeling her father Aerys II Targaryen, also known as the Mad King, Daenerys forced the citizens of King’s Landing to relive the nightmare of Aerys II’s reign of terror,.

Why do Targaryens have white hair

Answered By: Samuel Morris Date: created: Sep 13 2024

In the “Game of Thrones” universe and the prequel “House of the Dragon” – season 1 of which just finished airing – members of the Targaryen family possess some distinguishing features. The most striking among these physical features is their silver or white hair.

But, many viewers have wondered, why does every Targaryen have silver hair? It is obvious that Targaryens anticipate their offspring having white or silver hair when they are born. In fact, Viserys and Alicent Hightower’s true-born children all inherited their father’s silver hair. Meanwhile, based only on their brown hair, Rhaenyra Targaryen’s children are assumed to be “not of pure Targaryen blood”.

What is it about the Targaryen silver hair? Can Targaryens have hair that is a different colour at birth? Based on George RR Martin’s books, the answer is not as simple as you may expect. So, what really causes the Targaryens to have silver hair? Read more: House of the Dragon: Did you notice this actor swap in season finale? The Targaryen family hails from Old Valyria, where lighter skin tones and hair colours were particularly common.

As a result, the family had white or silvery blonde hair. The Targaryens have been able to keep their distinguishing Valyrian characteristics due to years of inbreeding. George RR Martin might have given the Targaryens such an unusual hair colour out of the blue to set them apart from the Westerosi people and suggest a certain otherworldliness about the royal lineage, underscoring the idea that they do not really belong in the Seven Kingdoms.

But not every Targaryen has silver hair. In “Game of Thrones,” Jon Snow is a Targaryen, and his hair is dark. And he is not the only one. In George RR Martin’s books, characters with black hair include Baelor Breakspear and Aegor Rivers. All these instances include those who chose not to “keep it in the family.” Read more: ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel keeps dragons, adds diversity Long story short, as per genetics, it is most likely because dark hair is a dominant gene in the real world and light hair is recessive.

Is Rhaenyra Jon Snow’s sister?

9 Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen Is Jon Snow’s Seventh Great-Grandmother – Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen is one of the most important characters in House of the Dragon, After her uncle Daemon was banished from King’s Landing, Rhaenyra was named heir to the Iron Throne by her father. This made her the first woman in line to the Iron Throne.

Rhaenyra would later become the mother of two future kings, Viserys II and Aegon III. King Viserys II had a son named Aegon. King Aegon IV then fathered Daeron II, who had a son named Maekar I. This makes Princess Rhaenyra Jon Snow’s seventh great-grandmother.

Is Daemon Targaryen a White Walker

Answered By: Ryan Hill Date: created: Sep 03 2023

Aemond Targaryen has a blue sapphire in place of the eye he lost, but that does not mean he’s becoming a White Walker in House of the Dragon. Warning: Contains SPOILERS for House of the Dragon season 1, episode 10, “The Black Queen,” and George R.R. Martin’s book, Fire & Blood. Aemond Targaryen has a blue eye in House of the Dragon ‘s season 1 finale, but that does not mean he’s turning into a White Walker.

  • Though most of the greens are missing, Aemond has a major role in the season 1 finale.
  • In a deadly, chaotic battle outside of Storm’s End, Aemond and Vhagar kill Lucerys Velaryon and his dragon, Arrax, fully setting in motion the Dance of the Dragons.
  • Even before that, though, Aemond was catching attention thanks to the reveal of a blue “eye” underneath his eye patch.

Indeed, Aemond’s blue eye has led to some confusion, and questions over whether it means he’s becoming a White Walker. While Aemond may share their piercing icy blue stare, it’s a far more deliberate choice on his part and there’s no indication him becoming a White Walker is actually possible: they won’t be making their move until over 150 years later, and at most Aemond could become a wight if he were killed, but again, that doesn’t fit with House of the Dragon ‘s story.
