Where did horses fall in grand national 2023

Two horses have died at the Grand National Festival in Aintree. Envoye Special, who was being ridden by James King, was assessed by vets on the track, but sustained a fatal injury. The horse died after falling in the Foxhunters’ Chase just after 4pm on Thursday 13 April.

A second horse, Dark Raven, died on the final day of the Grand National on Saturday 15 April. It has led to calls for tighter safety measures with animal cruelty charities condemning the races. Animal welfare charity, League Against Cruel Sports said: “Horse racing urgently needs tighter safety measures after the tragic death Envoye Special on the first day of the Randox Grand National Festival.” The death toll at the Aintree Festival has now reached 60 horses.

• It’s time for change and for a new independent regulatory body with horse welfare as its number one priority to be introduced, as well as a ban on whip use during all races.” Envoye Special is the 60th horse to have died at the Aintree Festival in the past 23 years.

Aintree Racecourse said after the fall Envoye Special was attended to by the on-course veterinary team. A spokesperson said: “Envoye Special was immediately attended to by our expert veterinary professionals during the Foxhunters’ Steeple Chase. “After assessment, sadly they concluded the necessary course of action for the horse’s welfare was to put him to sleep.

Our sincere sympathies are with his connections.” Ms Judd continued: “One death is a death too many, but we’ve now seen scores of horses dying at the Aintree Festival since the turn of the century. “The only answer can be tighter safety measures at racecourses in the UK, and proper scrutiny of horse welfare.” Another group of activists, Animal Rising, has promised to disrupt the festival on the day of the headline Grand National race – despite an undercover report exposing their plan.

Members of the group had planned to form a human barricade across the course at Aintree after sneaking into the event with ladders and bolt cutters. • Last year saw four horses die over the course of the three-day festival, with two being pronounced dead following the showpiece event.
• Eclair Surf and Discorama both died after running in the famous steeplechase 12 months ago, with the former suffering a traumatic head injury in a fall and the latter being euthanised after picking up an “untreatable” pelvic injury.

While modern steeplechase races have an average of just over four equine fatalities for every 1,000 horses taking part, according to the British Horseracing Authority, the National’s rate is considerably higher, with seven out of 439 horses taking part between 2000 and 2010 dying as a result of their involvement.

One horse had to be put down after suffering a fatal injury in the 2023 Aintree Grand National. Hill Sixteen, a 10-year-old gelding, was attended to by vets after falling at the first fence under jockey Ryan Mania but couldn’t be saved. The horse’s death was confirmed by part owner Jimmy Fyffe, a director of Dundee United football club, who owned the winner of the final race on the card, Florida Dreams.

Animal Rising had threatened to disrupt the four-and-a-quarter-mile and were protesting from early on Saturday morning outside the track. As the National runners were in the parade ring, a number of protestors breached security fences around the Liverpool venue and ran on to the course. The horses were sent back to the pre-parade ring, with the race delayed as police dealt with the intruders.

Hill Sixteen was one of two horses to lose their life on the day following the death of the Willie Mullns-trained Dark Raven in the third race on the card, the Turners Mersey Novices’ Hurdle, which was won by Irish Point. Dark Raven, owned by Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, had won three of his five races under rules and finished sixth in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival before his latest start for which he was sent off a 100-30 chance.

• Munir said on Twitter : “Thank you for all your kind messages on the sad loss of our dear Dark Raven RIP.” Envoye Special was racing in a race confined by amateur riders when he lost his partner at the ninth fence, the one before Becher’s Brook.
• The Kieran Burke-trained nine-year-old continued riderless but fell at one of the subsequent fences.

Why do horses die at the Grand National? – Many believe horses die because of the sheer difficulty of the race track. Animal rights group Peta UK said the Grand National is one of the “longest and most hazardous in the world”, claiming that its “high risk factor” is part of its claim to fame.

“Even those who make it off the track alive are likely to suffer. “Thousands of horses – including ‘spent’ thoroughbreds and those who don’t ‘make the grade’ – are discarded like used betting slips every year. They’re abandoned, neglected, or sold for slaughter.” BHA has actually been trying to improve welfare standards in the sport in recent years, and has claimed that now just 0.2% runners die due to the changes now implemented.
