BBC Look East breakfast presenter Louise Priest is leaving the corporation after nearly 40 years on the air The impact on home life of getting up at 04:00 is one of the reasons she has decided to go There are no immediate plans as to what she will do next but she wonders if she should write a book

Presenter Louise Priest is leaving the BBC after a career in local radio and regional television spanning nearly 40 years. A familiar face to breakfast and lunchtime audiences of BBC Look East she said “it never occurred to me to leave” until now. Joining the corporation in September 1983, she worked in Birmingham and Manchester before getting a job at BBC Radio Norfolk.

“I feel I have made the right decision to go, but I’m also slightly nervous about life after the BBC,” she said. Media caption, After nearly 40 years on the air it got a little emotional for Louise Priest’s final goodbye Image caption, Louise Priest joined the BBC as a reporter in September 1983 after completing a radio journalism course at the London College of Printing Born in Loughborough, Leicestershire, she said: “I had a romantic notion about being a marine biologist for a while, but I wasn’t great at science so that was that.

“I almost went down the home economics teacher route but the thought of showing children how to make shortcrust pastry year after year just didn’t excite me enough.” Having decided journalism was the way forward, Priest’s first job with the corporation was at BBC Radio Guernsey.

It was upon landing a job at BBC Radio Norfolk aged 23 that the county eventually became her long-term home. “So many things have changed over the years. The way newsrooms are staffed, the advances in technology and of course the digital/online world,” she said. “I have been so lucky to have a variety of jobs at the BBC it never occurred to me to leave but, after almost 40 years, I felt the time was right.

“The impact of the 4am starts on my home life was the biggest factor.” Image caption, Louise Priest said her three tips for working in the media would be to “have confidence, passion for the job and be prepared to work hard” Priest, now 62, who is married and has two children Clark and Grace, said it had been a “privilege meeting and interviewing people from all walks of life, from a prime minister to a pantomime dame”.

  1. The early days were very different in terms of equipment.
  2. I remember hauling a very heavy ‘mobile’ phone around the Royal Norfolk Show in the 1980s and the radio recording equipment was so heavy – now it’s all done on a smartphone,” she said.
  3. No two days have ever been the same; the whole range of stories and laughs with my colleagues has meant a very varied work life.

“In the early days at Norfolk Tower the ‘boys’ would play cricket in the main production office – until I got hit in the eye and that put a stop to that.” Image caption, Louise Priest was never afraid to throw herself into the job. even if it did involve a bucket of cold water Image caption, Roy Waller, Louise Priest and Stewart White (l-r) at BBC Radio Norfolk’s 20th anniversary celebrations in September 2000 “I have loved my time in radio and the immediacy of responding to news and situations,” she said.

TV is very different but I have enjoyed bringing the news to viewers over the years but it does sometimes go wrong. “Many years ago a camera slowly slipped down, leaving me with just my eyes showing at the end of a TV bulletin.” “There are so many radio ‘almost mishaps’ including uncontrollable giggling – corpsing as it’s known – during a radio news bulletin.

“I blamed the presenter Roy Waller, who I’m sure many will remember, “He had to finish off reading the weather for me and from that day, news people were banned from reading bulletins in the same studio as the presenter.” BBC I would like thank the audience for their company over the years. Our business doesn’t survive without viewers and listeners and it’s been a privilege to meet so many of you. Robert Thompson, the BBC’s senior head of content production for the East and London, said: “Louise is a BBC East legend and has worked across so many of our radio and TV programmes across the region. “Most recently she’s been waking up the region on TV during BBC Breakfast and I know that many of our viewers will really miss her, as will we.

What do you get for winning Only Connect

Answered By: Leonars Anderson Date: created: Feb 07 2023

by Ali Lloyd on March 10, 2023 No comments It’s that time of year again where the current series of Only Connect draws to a close. For the uninitiated, Only Connect is a quiz show on the BBC. It has four rounds:

  1. Connections – Figure out the connection from four apparently random clues
  2. Sequences – Determine what would come fourth in a sequence
  3. Connecting Wall – Sort 16 clues into four connected groups of four, and find what connects them
  4. Missing Vowels – Determine the word or phrase which has had its vowels removed and spaces added or subtracted. These come in connected groups of four, where the connection is given.

It is generally considered to be very difficult. The questions often rely on esoteric trivia, but rarely do they solely rely on such trivia. For many of the questions the answer can be figured out in the moment, based on limited knowledge or partial identification; educated guessing is perhaps the most valuable skill of the Only Connect player.

  • There is no cash on offer for winning Only Connect; the only prizes for winning are bragging rights, the chance to appear on another episode, and a trophy (an upgrade from earlier series which offered a three-way share in a trophy).
  • You really only participate in Only Connect for the love of the game.

The show embraces its reputation for being deliberately obscure. In the first few series, contestants had to choose from questions labelled with Greek letters. After complaints that this was “pretentious” and “elitist”, Only Connect doubled down and changed the labels to Egyptian hieroglyphs as a joke.

How does Only Connect work

Answered By: Jeffery Richardson Date: created: Jul 08 2023

Pattern-focused quiz show Only Connect will make its highly-anticipated return to BBC Two this evening (July 17) as the 19th series kicks off. Hosted by Victoria Coren Mitchell, Only Connect has been missed by fans following the series 18 finale back in March of this year.

For those unfamiliar with the format of Only Connect, knowledge is only able to help contestants so much, as they have to use both their logic and lateral thinking as they take a stab at making it through to the final round. Participants have to find patterns using, what appear to be, random clues. At first glance, many of the connected concepts may appear to not be connected at all, so patience plays a major part in the show, too.

The teams must suss out what links four clues that are revealed one-by-one in the first round of the competition, with teams winning more points for the fewer clues they need to work out the link. The second round follows a similar system, although teams must correctly identify the final clue in the sequence.

  • Read more: BBC University Challenge: Amol Rajan to make debut as new quizmaster tonight Round three sees each team face a “Connecting Wall”, composed of 16 clues that appear to be random.
  • The teams are up against the clock as they have a go at correctly separating the clues into four groups of four.
  • The team with the highest score progresses through the televised competition at the end of each game.

Coren Mitchell, who is married to actor and comedian David Mitchell, has hosted the show since its inception back in 2008, and will be returning to the hotseat for the show’s 19th series. Only Connect is not the only BBC quiz show making its return tonight, as Amol Rajan is set to host University Challenge for the very first time as he fills Jeremy Paxman’s shoes following his departure from the long-running programme earlier this year.

Are David Mitchell and Lee Mack friends

Answered By: Oscar Evans Date: created: Apr 01 2023

Comedian Lee Mack, 54, has revealed what he thinks is the craziest story to ever have turned out to be true on BBC One’s Would I Lie To You?. The Not Going Out star spoke about the popular panel show in an interview with Express.co.uk on the red carpet of Cirque Du Soleil’s newest European Premiere at the Royal Albert Hall.

Asked about what he felt was the most unlikely true story on the show, Mack said that it was one involving comedian Dom Joly and Al-Qaeda terrorist Osama bin Laden. “That Dom Joly went to school with Osama bin Laden,” he confirmed. “I know! It’s mad isn’t it?” Asked what it was like working with Would I Lie To You? co-stars Rob Brydon, 57, and David Mitchell, 48, Mack spoke warmly of his pals on the show.

It is true that Joly once went to school with terrorist and Al-Qaeda leader Bin Laden, who was responsible for the tragic events of 9/11. Both men attended a Christian Quaker school in Lebanon for children between the ages of four and 18. The pair couldn’t have been friends because they were “at different ends of the age spectrum”, although Joly did muse that the Quaker teaching probably didn’t “sit very well” with Bin Laden.

During the show, Mitchell probed Joly to see if he was telling the truth, asking him questions about their time at school together. “Did you chat much?” he asked, to which Joly replied: “I’d pass him in the playground – he was quite an intimidating figure to be honest.

I never found him.” The story from Joly was so shocking that, while Mitchell’s team voiced that it might be true, the lead panellist decided to call it a lie. However, he was stunned to find that Joly had indeed been telling the truth about passing the well-known terrorist in the playground.

  1. Would I Lie To You is now in its 16th season, with its first episode airing on June 16, 2007.
  2. While Mitchell and Mack have always been team captains on the show, the presenter was originally Angus Deayton, before he was replaced with Rob Brydon in 2009.

What is the highest score on the Only Connect

Answered By: Brandon Simmons Date: created: Mar 27 2023

Trivia – The show is filmed at the Portmanmoor Road Industrial Estate in Splott, Cardiff. Curiously, uses the same title as – but is otherwise unconnected to – one of the most unpopular Radio 4 panel games in living memory. That version of Only Connect was helmed by Arabella Weir.

The title comes from the epigraph to E.M. Forster’s 1910 novel Howards End, Not related to the much earlier (and considerably easier) quiz Connections (1), however, the two shows do bear certain similarities. Similarly, Odd One Out involved finding a connection between up to 3 clues in its bonus rounds, and trying to do so via only 1 clue in its endgame, but this was its only real similarity with ‘Only Connect’, and, as with ‘Connections’, ‘Odd One Out’ was relatively easy to play.

The highest ever score is 41, achieved by the Epicureans, which contained the MP-to-be (and The Krypton Factor champion) Aaron Bell. One very unusual, and quite possibly unique, touch is that the penultimate edition of the series is the ‘Third Place Playoff’, whereby the two defeated semi-finalist teams play each other for the honour of officially finishing in third place.

It’s certainly a nice touch, as it means an extra edition that we wouldn’t otherwise have, as well as a little potential extra kudos for the teams concerned. One thing we noticed when watching old episodes from Alan Connor’s time as question editor (and if you can’t descend into such geeky detail in a piece about Only Connect, where can you?) is that the missing vowels round often featured categories where two things would be “combined” or “merged”, such as a category on “Films merged with US States” which had answers such as THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARYLAND and GONE WITH THE WINDIANA.

An idea which Connor would later take with him to Richard Osman’s House of Games where it flourished into “Answer Smash”. The 2022-3 series was dedicated to Chris Stuart, the executive producer; the first episode ended with a post-credits ‘sample’ of a March 2021 episode, in which Victoria read out and replied to a letter asking what he and other executive producers actually did.

In addition to several future celebrities taking part (Aaron Bell MP, future Chasers Mark Labbett and Jenny Ryan and future Trapper Frank Paul), several proper celebrities have competed in the series; Mastermind finallist Dan Adler brought along Mitch Benn and Emma Kennedy for his team, while the former MP for Lewisham East, Bridget Prentice, partook in the 2022-3 series.

(Coincidentally, Lewisham East was the same seat held by Heidi Allen when her appearance on an episode of Have I Got News for You during the lead-up to the European Parliament elections in 2019 caused that show to be pulled. Fortunately, the risk to Only Connect was somewhat less as Prentice had long since retired from active politics.) For the 2023/24 series, Coren used her introductions to ram Richard Osman ‘s “Thursday Murder Club” serial, which wasn’t too much trouble for the most part.
